And for all the school's struggles - hungry pupils, unpaid staff, no electricity or resources - this remarkable school has high ambitions for its pupils. It's both familiar and remarkably different to our own schools. In amongst the day-to-day business of staff meetings, PTAs, discipline discussions and lesson planning are moving scenes of orphaned children, over-crowded classes, PE lessons in the dust, and a drama teacher who believes his pupils are the future leaders of Liberia. This documentary is the chilling Cold War account about what actually started the bloody uprising on December 15, 1989, when supporters of the Protestant Minister László Tokés in Timisoara rallied around his church to protect him from eviction by the military and by the Romanian Secret Police, the Securitate. It all began in Montreal, Canada, in March of 1989 when two French-Canadians – former Quebec Cabinet Minister Michel Clair and Radio-Canada reporter Réjean Roy – were sent to Timisoara to secretly record a TV interview with Tökés, the country's biggest dissident. What transpired was a cat-and-mouse game between the two Quebecers and the Securitate who followed their every move. Despite all odds the tapes got out to the West and the interview was broadcast that summer. As a result, Tokés was given an ultimatum: leave the church by Dec. 15 or be removed. Tokés refused to vacate, and the results were horrendous – more than 1100 people died in the fighting that started that day.","stream","[]","['Romania']","[]","['Documentary films']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1004979xxx/1004979217/1004979217-disc001-file001-frame00180-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?WHIV;2236373" "asp2663229-ant3","","O le aganu'u manogi o Samoa. Exploring Samoa's fragrance culture","2011","32 min","[]","Among the many dimensions of Samoa's rich cultural complex is the making and use of fragrant coconut oil. This film explores how the oil is made, the plants and trees from which fragrances are derived, the use of fragrant oils in rituals and events, and the economic potential of this important artisanal activity. As with many of the cultural expressions in Samoa, the making of fragrant oil is undergoing change with declining knowledge and availability of the fragrant plants and trees. Kigamoni (cinnamon) is becoming the fragrance of choice not for its enticing quality as a fragrance but simply because the tree, a recently introduced exotic, has spread quickly and is readily available throughout the country. Conversely, many native trees once favoured for their fragrances are becoming harder to find. With declining use comes declining knowledge of the trees. Bottled fragrant coconut oil or fagu u'u, is a popular commodity available at the markets in Apia and Salelologa and is often sold in Fanta and soy sauce bottles. As a part of the creative economy, this cottage industry contributes significantly to the social and economic well-being of society and this theme is explored towards the end of the film.","stream","[]","['Samoa']","['Manners and customs', 'Essences and essential oils']","['Documentary films']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1006633xxx/1006633525/1006633525-disc001-file001-frame00180-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?ANT3;2663229" "asp99239599100971","","Deploying and migrating to Azure web apps. There is also a look at elements of the APP writing criteria and examples of how a teacher uses it to focus teaching in the classroom. There is then the chance to try applying the criteria to a student's work. Secondary APP reading criteria is also looked at, and a teacher shows how they share the criteria with students to help them consider how they need to improve. There is also the opportunity to apply the criteria to a piece of work, as part of the e-learning package. A reflection follows, on the process of gathering evidence to make judgements, and the importance of moderating work with colleagues to embed APP in English.","stream","[]","['Great Britain']","['Education, Secondary', 'Peer review', 'English language', 'Educational tests and measurements', 'Reading (Secondary)']","['Instructional television programs']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1004322xxx/1004322262/1004322262-disc001-file001-frame00015-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?EDIV;1738311" "asp4185209-marc","","We who remain","","16 minutes","[]","The story of a region cut off from the world, ""We Who Remain” ushers the viewer into the heart of a forgotten conflict in the Nuba Mountains of Sudan. In this program, Professor Wanda Corn uses representative samples of O'Keeffe's paintings and Stieglitz's photographs to show the impact they had on each other and on the evolution of American art. Many of Stieglitz's 1600 photographs of O'Keeffe were 'carefully posed, cropped, and fluidly symbolic,' indicative of a creative collaboration between subject and photographer. O'Keeffe initially confined her modernist style of abstraction, unusual vantage point, and strong form and color to the traditionally female subject of flowers. But in the late 1920's, perhaps as an act of social and matrimonial defiance, she began to paint New York City skyscrapers, and later, in conjunction with yearly sojourns to New Mexico, she employed an increasingly surreal style in depicting landscapes, churches, and skulls, the latter dramatically symbolizing 'the rich tradition and cultural mix of the Southwest.' This conscious change in subject matter was a reflection of O'Keeffe's strong artistic spirit and her determination to reconnect with traditional America, to 'embrace the historical rural past with modernist techniques and perspectives,' and to gain recognition not as a female artist, but as an artist of the American Southwest.","stream","['Stieglitz, Alfred', ""O'Keeffe, Georgia""]","[]","['Art, American']","['Documentary film']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1005274xxx/1005274078/1005274078-disc001-file001-frame01270-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?ARTV;2214893" "asp2133161-clmv","Mozart, Wolfgang Amadeus, 1756-1791","Quatour no. 19 en ut majeur. A technical failure (a kind of justifiable negligence, even though it sounds contradictory, but that's what human actions are) has endangered the lives of the passengers on Peninsula Flight 2549. The pilots, hardened, experienced professionals are striving, along with their colleagues in the Control Center, to find a solution. The flight attendants and the chief steward are atypical, baroque characters who, in the face of danger, try to forget their own personal problems and devote themselves body and soul to the task of making the flight as enjoyable as possible for the passengers, while they wait for a solution. Life in the clouds is as complicated as it is at ground level, and for the same reasons, which could be summarized in two: sex and death. The travelers in Business Class consist of a pair of newlyweds, partygoers, worn out by their wedding celebration; a financier and embezzler; unscrupulous in business but also a father afflicted by his daughter's estrangement; an inveterate Don Juan with an uneasy conscience who is trying to say goodbye to one of his women (girlfriends); a rural psychic; a queen of the gossip magazines and a Mexican with an important secret. Each of them has a project in Mexico City, either to work or to escape. They all have some kind of secret, not just the Mexican. Their defenselessness in the face of danger provokes a general catharsis among the passengers and the crew, and this ends up becoming the best way to escape from the idea of death. This catharsis, developed in the tone of a riotous, moral comedy, fills the time with sensational confessions that help them forget the anguish of the moment.","stream","[]","[]","['Flight crews', 'Air travel']","['Feature films', 'Comedy films', 'Fiction films']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/content/1008269xxx/1008269100/1008269100-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?MARC;3360722" "asp2802781-lava","","La noche eterna","","78 min","['America Latina en video: ciencias sociales']","La palabra de los mineros de Río Turbio y sus mujeres. The focus is on John, a church minister and a leading village elder, trained in settling disputes in the South African mines. John gets entangled in the troubled affairs of a quarrelsome young couple, a stay-at-home farmer and his police constable, town-savvy wife. They claim to be still in love. But when the husband confesses to adultery – ‘breaking the yard’ in Tswana terms – and the wife decides to fight for her rights in court, John finds himself in an awkward position. Both faded quickly from the memory of the international community. There was only a lacklustre investigation by the Argentine government. Only the tenacity of surviving family members pressing for justice is finally bringing to light a conspiracy of international proportion. The attack occurred in 1992 when a car bomb struck the Israeli consulate, killing 29 people. David Goldman, an American, was among the dead. His father Ralph has been pressing Argentine President Menem for a thorough investigation. Menem, a Syrian by birth, had close ties to the Arab world, although he had been courting American favor. Two years later, in July of 1994, a Jewish center, AMIA, was struck by a truck bomb. Eighty-five people perished. President Menem never visited the site. The police conducted an inept investigation, leaving the remains of the truck unattended for a month. The truck was finally traced to a car thief with Nazi ties who was taped accepting a bribe from the presiding judge of the AMIA case. The film makes clear the layers of official corruption as well as the pervasive anti-semitism in Argentina, a country that hosted Nazis fleeing Europe after the war. There is evidence that Hezbollah had a hand in the devastating attacks. A trial against the alleged local Argentine policemen has just begun that may take another year. The trial is already submerged in controversy. The filmmaker was courageous in his tireless pursuit of truth. The deputy head explains how they identify Gifted and Talented pupils, what they tell parents and pupils and why the school has taken on gifted and talented initiatives so wholeheartedly. Pupils on the Gifted and Talented register talk about how they see themselves, how they respond to what the school provides and how they cope with the pressures they sometimes feel.","stream","[]","['Great Britain']","['Gifted children', 'Education, Secondary']","['Instructional television programs']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1004319xxx/1004319133/1004319133-disc001-file001-frame00180-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?EDIV;1736648" "asp3276087-marc","","Reaching teens. 19.6","","2 minutes","['Reaching teens']","This instructional video, from the ""Reaching Teens: Strength-Based Communication Strategies to Build Resilience and Support Healthy Adolescent Development"" series produced by the American Academy of Pediatrics, is about being culturally humble by asking teenagers about themselves.","stream","[]","['United States']","['Intercultural communication', 'Cultural competence', 'Youth']","['Educational films', 'Film excerpts']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1007995xxx/1007995970/1007995970-disc001-file001-frame00030-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?MARC;3276087" "asp2542852-blsv","","Tony Brown's journal. The story of culture is often cast as a gradual evolution. But, for James Fox, art and culture in the 20th century didn't happen like that. It was not a considered and calmly executed process, but a series of cultural earthquakes centred in particular cities, at particular times. In each episode of this three-part series, James Fox appraises the impact of events in one city during one groundbreaking year - Vienna in 1908, Paris in 1928 and New York in 1951.","stream","[]","['New York (N.Y.)']","[]","['Television mini-series', 'Documentary television programs']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1008343xxx/1008343388/1008343388-disc001-file001-frame00180-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?MARC;3366484" "asp3291711-marc","","Grand Rapids","","77 minutes","[]","Grand Rapids, Manitoba, is situated where the Saskatchewan River flows into Lake Winnipeg. For thousands of years, indigenous people fished for sturgeon along the shoreline of the rapids. Misapawistik was the Cree name for the rapids. This documentary is about memories of people who lived in Grand Rapids when the mighty river flowed. The story is a record of perceptions about how construction of the dam has altered every aspect of the resident's lives.
