Out of the shadows. Part one","","55 minutes","['Black America since MLK']","The series begins at a crucial turning point in American history: the Selma marches that led to the signing of the 1965 Voting Rights Act, and the urban rebellion that broke out in Watts just a few days later. Watts marked a new phase in the black struggle, revealing that our nation's racial issues were not confined to the Jim Crow South - and that true equality would not come through laws alone. African Americans wanted access to better jobs, housing and education, and an end to police brutality, and they felt emboldened to try new strategies for achieving those goals. Gates travels from Watts to rural Alabama, where he learns how Stokely Carmichael helped African Americans form their own political party - the Lowndes County Freedom Organization, which ran an all-black ticket and sought political power in the face of white terror. In Chicago, activist Prexy Nesbitt tells Gates how Martin Luther King, Jr., inspired by the changing times, waged war on housing segregation and economic injustice in the urban north, meeting fierce resistance. In Oakland, Kathleen Cleaver reveals how radical groups like the Black Panthers, impatient with the nonviolent tactics of the past, confronted white authority with a new spirit of defiance. Reverend Jesse Jackson recounts the shocking assassination of Dr. King in 1968, which unleashed a massive wave of rage and mourning, raising fears that civil rights had suffered a lethal blow. The wheels of progress were already in motion, however. African Americans like Gates and his Yale classmate Sheila Jackson Lee discovered a widening field of opportunities thanks to affirmative action and the crumbling of racial barriers. Popular music, films, and television shows increased the visibility of African Americans, and conveyed a new message: Black is beautiful. At the same time, the rising call for Black Power inspired artists like Sonia Sanchez and athletes like Muhammad Ali and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to redefine American culture, politics, and society - and to see themselves in a new way.","stream","[]","['United States']","['African Americans']","['Documentary television programs']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1009765xxx/1009765849/1009765849-disc001-file001-frame00180-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?MARC;3973995" "asp2366465-busv","","Wesley Clark. Group work follows where pupils take a number and break it into its component parts. Again the vocabulary of Maths is emphasised as thousandths are introduced. About her travel and experiences in Japan she wrote a book titled as 'Travel in Japan by a Bengalee Woman' (Bongo Mohilar Japan Jatra). Regarding travelogues on Japan the first book that comes into any Bengalee's mind is Rabindranath Tagore's well known 'Traveller to Japan' (Japan Jatri). But while Tagore wrote about the beauty and aesthetics of Japan with profound depth, Hariprobha portrayed the everyday domestic life of the common Japanese people. Japan, during the beginning of the last century, seems a different country altogether. Hariprobha, during her last visit to Japan in 1941, used to read Bengali news from Tokyo radio for Subash Bose's Azad Hind Fouz. After the Second World War Hariprobha returned to India and died in Kolkata in 1972. Besides narrating Hariprobha's odyssey, the film also narrates the problematics of international marriages between Japanese and Bengalees and tries to explore the cross culture issues involved.","stream","[]","[]","['Interethnic marriage', 'Intercountry marriage']","['Documentary films']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1006988xxx/1006988913/1006988913-disc001-file001-frame00180-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?ASV2;2800252" "asp2163370-vast","","Machines and people","2005","24 min","['Above and beyond']","The Search: Celestial fossils dating back to the beginning of time for the solar systems, help scientists solve the greatest riddle - life. From the beginning, African Americans were agents of their liberation - by fleeing the plantations and taking up arms to serve in the United States Colored Troops. After Emancipation, African Americans sought to realize the promise of freedom - rebuilding families shattered by slavery; demanding economic, political and civil rights; even winning elected office - but a few years later, an intransigent South mounted a swift and vicious campaign of terror to restore white supremacy and roll back African-American rights. In this film, eight enlightened Muslim women living in France speak out frankly about their sexual education and experiences in relation to Islamic tradition. Young Muslim girls are given no information about their bodies and are so poorly informed that when they first menstruate, they often think they are ill or abnormal. Girls are raised to be completely prudish as far as men are concerned. In contrast, relationships between women are much more comfortable, with a strong sense of conviviality and even sensuality in the haman or communal bath. The women discuss the yearnings they felt for the men they were attracted to, as well as their first sexual experiences. One recalls her exhilaration when, at 16, she first felt desire, but her joy was bittersweet because it came with an overwhelming sense of guilt. Another decided to get rid of her virginity when she was in love for the first time but did it more out of a sense of rebellion than as a search for pleasure. She was not at ease with her body and only discovered pleasurable physical sensations when she was older. One said that after her first orgasm, she cursed her mother for trying to deny her that pleasure. Another could not indulge in sexual acts without imagining her mother in the room with her! She had sex with her boyfriend but afterwards underwent surgery to restore her virginity. For these Muslim women, sexual passion with a lover of their own choosing is empowering. One woman felt lovemaking could be a sacred moment but she was taught to repress this feeling. This remarkable film gives voice to women with the courage to break centuries of taboos and acknowledge their sexual nature.","stream","[]","[]","['Women in Islam', 'Muslim women', 'Sex']","['Documentary']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1003831xxx/1003831291/1003831291-disc001-file001-frame01530-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?FLON;1652549" "asp1738569-ediv","","In-school variation. Bing Crosby rediscovered","","86 min","['The PBS Video Collection, Second Edition']","Bing Crosby was, without a doubt, the most popular and influential multi-media star of the first half of the twentieth century. His remarkable appeal, which continues to this day, was in his seemingly effortless ability to pull an audience in to his intimate, laid-back voice and innate charm. For over three decades, through radio, film, television, and records he reigned supreme. A brilliant entrepreneur, Crosby played an important role in the development of the postwar recording industry. As one of Hollywood's most popular actors, he won the Oscar for 1944's Going My Way and starred in the iconic 'Road' films with Bob Hope. Crosby recorded nearly 400 hit singles, an achievement no one-not Sinatra, Elvis or the Beatles-has come close to matching. Thirty-seven years after his death, he remains the most recorded performer in history. Narrated by Stanley Tucci and directed by Emmy-winner Robert Trachtenberg (American Masters-Mel Brooks: Make a Noise), this film explores the life and legend of this iconic performer, revealing a personality far more complex than the image the public had only thought they'd known.","stream","['Crosby, Bing']","['United States']","['Motion picture actors and actresses', 'Singers']","['Documentary films']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1007011xxx/1007011250/1007011250-disc001-file001-frame00135-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?PBS2;2800440" "asp3236479-marc","","Celebrating Semana Santa. Change, conflict, and continuity in rural Honduras","","43 minutes","[]","This ""superb, thought-provoking"" ethnographic documentary explores the vitality and controversies surrounding a remarkable syncretic religious ceremony held in neighboring remote villages in rural Honduras during the Easter Holy Week. The ritual drama enacted in this ceremony resonates with persistent indigenous beliefs although expressed within a familiar Catholic framework. During the week leading up to Semana Santa, the two villages are literally overrun by characters called ""Judios"" (Spanish for ""Jews""), masked individuals who carry wooden swords, speak in a strange guttural manner, and generally cause mayhem by staging riotous mock sword fights. Not surprisingly, members of the local Catholic Church -- most notably the parish priest -- consider these indigenous celebrations to be sacrilegious and want them ended. Tensions between Church members and the celebration participants are high, and the conflict is further exacerbated because the opposing sides are not comfortable speaking directly to one another about the issues involved. However, by including the divergent perspectives of members of the various constituencies, one of the principal goals of the film itself is to facilitate a channel of communication between the opposing parties that will enable dialogue to take place between them. With that goal in mind, the filmmaker returned to Honduras to screen a preliminary version of the film in order to make this invaluable cultural heritage available to the very community to which it belongs. Community members with opposing views were asked for their reactions, which were then incorporated into a final version of Celebrating Semana Santa, thereby adding a unique reflexive component to the film. Celebrating Semana Santa powerfully illustrates how symbols from the past may be re-interpreted in modern contexts and not simply survive but thrive in those radically changed situations. In so doing the film illuminates the varied ways that people craft their understanding of the present with reference to the past and their hopes for the future. The film will engage students and inspire thought and discussion in a wide variety of courses in Latin American studies, cultural anthropology and ethnography, and religious studies. It was produced and directed by Sam Pack, Associate Professor of Cultural Anthropology at Kenyon College. For hundreds of years, a 750-mile pilgrimage route has circled this mountainous island, connecting 88 separate temples and shrines that claim connection to the Great Master '' Kobo Daishi. Host Bruce Feiler circles the island, following a pilgrim trail that's taken by hundreds of thousands of Japanese and international pilgrims every year; a Buddhist pilgrimage that welcomes pilgrims of all faiths. While the majority now drive or travel by train or bus '' a two-week journey '' many still set aside 60 or more days to walk the entire route, especially in the spring when the cherry blossoms are in bloom and pilgrimage season is at its height. Temple priests introduce Bruce to sacred ceremonies that date back thousands of years, revealing how the presence of Kobo Daishi is believed to accompany all who follow in his footsteps. Out on the pilgrim trail, Bruce meets with different American walkers '' a hiking group from the Pacific Northwest, a retired soldier from California, and two recently-married doctors from Indiana '' to learn why they've come to Shikoku and what they are hoping to find.","stream","['Kūkai']","['Shikoku Region (Japan)']","['Pilgrims and pilgrimages', 'Sacred space']","['Documentary films']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1007011xxx/1007011706/1007011706-disc001-file001-frame00180-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?PBS2;2804387" "asp1641542-lawv","","Coca mama. Iron Ladies tells the story of 49 year-old Louise and 37 year-old Jackie, new ironworker apprentices who left their jobs to try the lucrative but dangerous trade of ironworking. Many men think women ""just don t belong"" in the ironworking trade. The work is heavy and dirty and risky. When erecting a building, the ironworkers are the only ones on the job site who aren t required to be ""tied off"" to the building with safety lines. A fall usually results in serious injuries or death; ironworkers have the highest fatality rates in the construction trades. The Los Angeles Ironworkers union has 3,000 men and eight women. The apprenticeship program is rigorous; only 30% make it through the three-year training. In this documentary, veteran women ironworkers tell stories of surviving as the only female working on a construction site. These stories are interwoven with footage of Louise and Jackie struggling through their training, meeting the challenges of the physically grueling program with fortitude and courage. Mystery of the Anasazi","c2005","ca 50 min","['American history in video']","The people who became known as the Anasazi began to farm the Four Corners Region as early as 1 A.D. For most of their history, they lived in small, scattered villages on the mesas and in the valleys. But in the middle of the 13th century, something happened. They began to cluster together and built high walls around their homes, or lived precariously on the cliff-sides. Then, a few decades later, they abandoned these homes, leaving behind most of their possessions, as if they intended to return. Instead, they disappeared from history. What happened? Did drought drive them away? Invading tribes? There is compelling evidence that the Anasazi might have had to turn to warfare and even cannibalism. Piecing together the story from both archaeologists and Native Americans, Josh Bernstein finally ends up, in his search for the truth, in the mysterious ruins of the Anasazi's greatest cultural center, Chaco Canyon, which for unknown reasons was abandoned around 1150 A.D.","stream","[]","['Four Corners Region', 'Cliff-dwellings', 'Mesa Verde National Park (Colo.)', 'Chaco Canyon (N.M.)', 'Cedar Mesa (San Juan County, Utah)']","['Pueblo Indians', 'Pueblo architecture', 'Droughts']","[]","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/content/1001007xxx/1001007875/1001007875-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?AHIV;497568" "asp3164436-marc","","Sunday morning. Since then, Espinoza has worked a minor miracle, and last year took the dramatic step of splitting the 2000 students complex into five small schools, each with its own principal. But Olympic faces a new challenge: the decline of America's global economy. Espinoza believes the country's multi-choice testing system, long thought to be best served by teaching from the front, is poorly equipping students for the 21st century, where skills like creative thinking and team working will be essential. Active learning, and project based teaching are the new buzzword, but it's proving a struggle. Some teachers are finding the changes tough, and test scores have taken a worrying dip. German Glacier: In Bavaria, at the Austrian border, is Germany's tallest mountain, the Zugspitze. Here, despite extraordinary efforts to save it, Germany's last glacier is dwindling. Every spring since 1991, ski resort workers have piled tonnes of loose snow on the glacier, and then covered it with giant anti-glare shields. This year because of the heat a 50% bigger tarpaulin went on a week earlier. As a result, little attention is given to reading skills after the primary grades, even though deep comprehension of written material takes a set of skills beyond the mechanics of decoding words. Although reading is one of the primary learning strategies employed throughout the educational process, many college students, freshmen through seniors, often report difficulty comprehending what they read. They are aware of the challenges that this presents to them and want to improve their reading memory. The pattern of early reading instruction followed by college student reading comprehension difficulty indicates that reading comprehension should be taught in college. In that regard, Improving Reading Comprehension Ability of the Millennial Athletic Training Student provides an overview of how instructors can teach reading comprehension in a manner that is appropriate with the characteristics of today's students. The video explains how reading comprehension can be improved through a variety of strategies, each of which is reviewed in detail.","stream","[]","[]","['Athletic trainers', 'Reading comprehension']","['Filmed lectures']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1004550xxx/1004550988/1004550988-disc001-file001-frame00205-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?SPEX;2168326" "asp2154094-vast","","Wonderful world. Here you become absorbed in the history of such ancient figures as Tutankhamun and Alexander the Great. Next we journey south on the Nile River to Aswan to see what is considered among the most magnificent monuments in the world: the Great Temples at Abu Simbel, constructed for Ramseses II who reigned for 67 years during the 13th century BC (19th Dynasty). In February 2012, the Public Health Division of the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) coordinated and hosted a four-day intensive training workshop entitled: Using drama for community education and behaviour change. Participants developed a script and produced a play that promoted testing for HIV and other STIs, as well as consistent condom use. SPC's Regional Media Centre videotaped the plays so they could be used as educational tools and learning/teaching resources.
