For him, the process of school improvement is always tricky, but is a process that benefits both schools. In Andrew Carter?s case, at South Farnham a local infants school has been struggling to find a headteacher, and Andrew would like to formally merge the schools to make one school of over 700 children. Cuernavaca: city of eternal spring. Mexico","","23 minutes","['Exploring the world']","Welcome to Cuernavaca, the capital of the state of Morelos and world famous for its temperate climate. The Spanish explorer Hernan Cortes founded this city in the 1500s, and his former palace is now the city's museum. The Cathedral, built in the 16th century by Franciscan monks, rises above the city's skyline. Its simple and austere interior complements the Gothic architecture and the fortress-like quality of the building, and the open air chapel outside the Cathedral is part of the original structure. Part of the monastery became the home of American millionaire Robert Brady in the 1960s and now houses an extensive art collection highlighted by the painting, ""Self-Portrait with Monkey"" by Frida Kahlo. Las Estacas Park is another attraction to visit. This ecological reserve is a peaceful sanctuary within the city, where you can enjoy many different types of water activities. Just outside Cuernavaca is one of Mexico's most important archeological sites, Teopanzolco. This was a major trading center for Indian tribes and a cultural capital of Mesoamerica for 200 years. We visit the Pyramid of the Plumed Serpent and see the carvings that were integral to the Mesoamerican calendar. Another attraction outside the city is the ultimate eco-adventure: white-water rafting! We learn the basics of this thrilling sport before rafting down the Amacuzac River. Back in the city, our final attraction is a relaxing spa experience at the Hosteria Las Quintas, the perfect ending to an exciting visit.","stream","[]","['Cuernavaca (Mexico)']","[]","['Travelogues (Television programs)']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1005341xxx/1005341833/1005341833-disc001-file001-frame00200-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?EBAP;2183114" "asp99412106800971","","This is life with Lisa Ling. Here's a video that takes you to a data-driven school district to show how data gathering and analysis is a required step to achieve desired results. This up-close tour introduces key elements of data-driven school improvement: How to use data in your school improvement process. What kinds of data give you a comprehensive and in-depth view of student performance and community expectations. Why collecting data from three levels - student, staff, and community - is essential. Where and when to analyze data to identify problems and give your school clear direction for improving student achievement. Video scenes show how teachers, administrators, and students take an active role in collecting and analyzing data. Teachers demonstrate how they use data to spot achievement gaps, identify instructional improvements, and analyze the effects of improvement efforts. And school leaders explain how they create staff buy-in to the process and share data throughout the district. Show this video to school improvement and teacher teams to highlight the positive impact of data-driven school improvement, and introduce audiences to methods that ensure data gathering and analysis provide direction and lead to decisions that are more likely to produce higher student achievement.","stream","[]","['United States']","['Education', 'School management teams', 'Educational tests and measurements', 'Students']","['Educational films']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1008022xxx/1008022275/1008022275-disc001-file001-frame00180-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?MARC;3291878" "asp2337691-busv","","Has the big data movement been overhyped?","2013","6 min","['Business education in video']","GigaOM's Om Malik discusses the CIA's CTO outlining the agency's agenda to collect data. Ancient religion in contemporary crisis","","61 minutes","[]","This widely acclaimed, landmark documentary was instrumental in the campaign to have Congress overturn the U.S. Supreme Court's 1990 ""Smith"" decision, which denied the protection of the First Amendment to the traditional sacramental use of peyote by Indian people. As timely and relevant today as ever, the film examines the history of European and American religious intolerance -- especially toward indigenous peoples -- and documents the centuries-old sacramental use of the cactus Peyote in the Americas, where it is integral to the beliefs and ceremonies of one of the oldest and largest Native religions in the Western hemisphere. The film seamlessly interweaves live-action and archival film footage, historical photographs and paintings, and commentary by members of the Native American church, lawyers, and noted scholars of history, religion, and anthropology. The film demonstrates how the Court's decision ultimately threatened the religious freedom of all Americans, and chronicles the successful efforts of the American Indian Religious Freedom Coalition, including the passage of the historic 1994 Amendment to The American Indian Religious Freedom Act that legalized sacramental peyote use. ""The Peyote Road"" is both classic and utterly contemporary. It will engage students and will generate analysis and discussion in a variety of courses in Native American studies, religious studies and comparative religion, cultural anthropology, American history and studies, and legal studies. This version of the film includes a 1996 legislative update. It was produced by Gary Rhine and directed by Rhine and Fidel Moreno (Yaqui/Huichol) for Kifaru Productions. The film was written by Phil Cousineau and his eloquent narration is delivered by noted actor and activist Peter Coyote.","stream","['Native American Church of North America']","['United States']","['Peyote', 'Peyotism', 'Indians of North America']","['Filmed interviews', 'Documentary films']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1007840xxx/1007840566/1007840566-disc001-file001-frame00230-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?MARC;3239217" "asp2663332-ant3","","O le matafaioi le maluapapa o le aia tatau","2012","40 min","[]","This film is an archival recording of the keynote address delivered by His Highness Tui Atua Tupua Tamasese Ta'isi Efi, Head of State of Samoa, to open the Law and Religion Conference on Managing Religious and Cultural Diversity in the Pacific held at the National University of Samoa, Lepapaigalagala, from 30 April - 1 May 2012.","stream","[]","['Samoa']","['Human rights', 'Cultural pluralism']","['Documentary films']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1006633xxx/1006633537/1006633537-disc001-file001-frame00180-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?ANT3;2663332" "asp99409019700971","","Beliefs and believers. Made up of vivid real-world examples, our goal is to present statistics in the context of its contemporary use. Host Dr. Pardis Sabeti guides viewers through the wide range of statistical applications used by scientists, business owners, and even Shakespeare scholars, in their work and daily lives. Starting with descriptive statistics, the series continues through probability and inference. Each unit builds on preceding ones to expand students' statistical knowledge and solidify their understanding of how the concepts fit together. Hitler sets his sights on dismantling the German state. When Hitler calls a general election to increase Nazi representation in the Reichstag, Hermann Goring sees an opportunity to impress by taking out the left-wing opposition. Goring orders a raid on the Communist Party HQ in the hope of finding evidence of a planned uprising. This unit explores our fascination with primes, culminating in the million-dollar puzzle of the Riemann Hypothesis, a possible description of the pattern behind the primes, and the use of the primes as the foundation of modern cryptography. Guests interviewed include Terence Tao, UCLA, and Ray Perlner, National Institute of Standards and Technology. Mathematics Illuminated is a 13-part multimedia learning resource for adult learners and high school teachers in math and other disciplines. The series explores major themes in the field of mathematics, from mankind's earliest study of prime numbers to the cutting edge mathematics used to reveal the shape of the universe. Rather than a series of problems to be solved, mathematics is presented as play we engage in to answer deep questions that are relevant in our world today. Mathematics also provides us with a powerful language for uncovering and describing phenomena in the world around us. The groundbreaking videos, interactive Web exploration, text materials, and group activities included in Mathematics Illuminated reveal the secrets and hidden delights of the ever-evolving world of mathematics.","stream","[]","[]","['Mathematics', 'Numbers, Prime']","['Instructional films']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1009754xxx/1009754642/1009754642-disc001-file001-frame00065-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?MARC;3964981" "asp2362503-pbsv","","The national parks. It is a story fueled by the racial, class, and sexual tensions of a Latino neighborhood in transition. Magdelena (Emily Rios) is the daughter of a Mexican-American family who runs a storefront church in Echo Park, Los Angeles. With her fifteenth birthday approaching, all she can think about is her boyfriend, her Quinceañera dress, and the Hummer Limo she hopes will carry her on her special day. But a few months before the celebration, Magdelena falls pregnant. As the eleborate preparations for her Quinceañera proceed, it's only a matter of time before her religious father finds out and rejects her. Forced out of her home, Magdalena moves in with her great-great uncle Tomas (Chalo Gonzalez), and old man who makes his living selling champurrado (a Mexican hot drink) in the street. Already living with him is Carlos (Jesse Garcia), Magdelena's cousin, a tough cholo who was thrown out by his parents. Carlos does not disguise his disapproval of Magdelena's arrival. The back house rental where Tomas has lived happily for many years is on a property that was recently purchased by an affluent white gay couple (David W. Ross and Jason L. Wood) -- pioneers of gentrification in the neighborhood. Inevitably, worlds collide when they become entangled in the lives of their tenants. As Magdelena's pregnancy grows more visible, she, Carlos, and Tomas pull together as a family of outsiders. But the economics of the neighborhood are turning against them. Unit 4","","29 minutes","['Physics for the 21st century']","This unit continues our movement from experimentally proven understanding of nature's four fundamental forces to the theoretical effort to develop a ""theory of everything"" that brings all four forces under the same conceptual umbrella. The most prominent aspect of that effort is the family of string theories that envision the basic units of matter as minuscule stretches of threadlike strings rather than point particles. Introduced in the mid-1970s, the string concept has stimulated a great deal of theoretical excitement even though it has no connection to experiment so far. The unit introduces string theory in the context of quantum gravity and outlines its inherent multidimensional nature; the most promising approach involves a total of ten dimensions. The unit then covers the relationship of string theory to particle physics and introduces the idea of ""branes,"" related to strings. Next, the unit focuses on cosmological issues arising from our understanding of the Big Bang, outlines the way in which the concept of rapid inflation very early in the universe can solve some major issues, and details links between string theory and cosmic inflation. When he regained awareness he was afflicted with ""global aphasia""--total loss of language--and could utter only a single syllable: ""mem."" The standard therapies yielded only frustration. Diane soon found, however, that by harnessing their deep knowledge of each other, and her understanding of language and the brain, she could guide Paul back to the world of words. In the process, she learned unexpected lessons about herself, their marriage, the underappreciated art of care-giving, and the brain's ability to heal itself. A Beethoven journey","","93 minutes","[]","Award-winning filmmaker Phil Grabsky is renowned for bringing some of the world's most important and dazzling art exhibitions onto the big screens of cinemas across the globe. Also famous for his In Search of ... classical music documentaries, he has now returned his lens - and microphones - onto the world of classical music with the release of Concerto - A Beethoven Journey. High class and wonderful - Concerto demands to be seen!' - Gramophone. Filmed over the course of four years, Grabsky and his Seventh Art team followed leading concert pianist Leif Ove Andsnes's attempt to understand and interpret one of the greatest sets of works for piano ever written: Beethoven's five piano concertos. However, Concerto is more than a portrait of a famous musician on tour; it is an exploration into Ludwig van Beethoven's life as revealed by these five masterworks. The relationship between the composer and his world is mirrored by the relationship between the pianist and orchestra in these concertos. The film seeks to reveal Beethoven in a way rarely seen before and bears witness to what is increasingly being regarded as one of the greatest interpretations ever of these five great pieces of music. A fascinating double portret' - Dagbladet. It is often said that every concert is the creation of a new artwork, which Grabsky has immortalised by filming at Leif Ove's concertos. He was also able to secure exclusive and intimate access throughout the journey, following Andsnes from his home in Bergen, Norway to concert halls all over the world. The end result is a beautifully-crafted film with lavish cinematography, a signature of Grabsky and Seventh Art's style. Andsnes's exquisite and exclusive classical performances are given far more than brief moments; they are effectively given centre stage. Considered one of the top pianists of the age, Leif Ove Andsnes offers rare insights into the mind of a world-class pianist and access to his personal and professional life. Andsnes gives an insight into the world of a contemporary classical musician. Against the wonderful background of Leif Ove playing these five pieces, we also peel back the many myths of Beethoven's life from prodigious talent in Vienna, to greatest composer alive by the time he wrote the fifth concerto. Perhaps above all it is the fresh new biography of Beethoven that is most revealing. Director Phil Grabsky says: I knew this exclusive journey with Leif Ove would allow me access to great performance - but I had no idea it would be this great. These became the best reviewed concerts of the past few years and I was on stage to record them. Even more importantly the music and Leif Ove's intelligent and accessible insight creates a staggeringly interesting new biography of arguably the greatest composer of all time.","stream","['Beethoven, Ludwig van']","[]","['Concerto', 'Concertos (Piano)']","['Concertos', 'Documentary films']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1007885xxx/1007885488/1007885488-disc001-file001-frame00175-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?MARC;3259127" "asp2223470-clmv","Cage, John","ASLSP","2013","24 min","[]","This release is the first complete recording of all of Cage's works for organ, plus 4'33. Flateyri lies next to a fjord and is surrounded by mountains. These mountains have the main role in our episode. Five years ago the village was hit by an avalanche killing 20 people. It was an enormous blow for a small community like Flateyri, and as a result a lot of people deserted the village, while others became depressed. Today the village has been largely rebuilt and the remaining villagers are trying to survive as best as they can in this remote spot. The petrol station - and its owner, Gogo - is crucial for this survival; it's about the only place people can go to for a cup of coffee, a quick bite or a decent conversation. It is the meeting point of the local community. Devised with the assistance of child experts, it is a remarkable insight into what really goes on in a child's mind. Each self-contained episode sees a small group of youngsters interacting with each other as they explore issues that affect all children, regardless of age, background, class or upbringing. The children, aged between five and 11 years old, focus on solving a task or problem, bringing their own brand of logic to a variety of topics such as Love and Hate, Right and Wrong, Who Am I and Who Will I Be? and Fear and Danger. Action cameras worn by the children themselves ensure we really do see things from their viewpoint as the themes play out in their lives beyond the group.","stream","[]","[]","['Hate in children', 'Children', 'Love in children', 'Child psychology']","['Documentary television programs']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1009922xxx/1009922999/1009922999-disc001-file001-frame00410-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?MARC;4037930" "asp4240440-marc","","The EYE. But as the two Chicagoans talk they realize they have something in common: Sam and Teddy grew up four blocks apart on Division Street - Sam at a private school in Pulaski Park, and Teddy on the other side of the Chicago River, in the white high rises of Cabrini Green.Teddy offers to take Sam for a walk down his side of Division, and so begins a journey through time, back into the contentious memory of one of Chicago's most notorious housing projects. As Sam and Teddy walk they exchange memories: insider vs. outsider, news vs. reality. Members of the Communist Workers Party massed for a ""Death to the Klan"" rally in Greensboro, North Carolina when a caravan of Ku Klux Klan and American Nazis arrived. As the police assigned to protect the rally inexplicably disappeared, the Klansmen opened fire, killing five demonstrators and injuring eleven others. Now, a quarter of a century later, the survivors have finally come upon a way to get to the heart of what really happened by mounting a Truth and Reconciliation Commission (2004-2006). The film focuses on five of the survivors of the attack, examining the paths they have taken since 1979. These activists have each struggled to stay true to their ideals. Two of the Klan figures -- one a former Grand Dragon who is now repentant, the other still an Imperial Wizard and staunchly unrepentant -- weave their own interpretation on the events and their aftermath. They all converge at the Truth Commission, the first time such an initiative has been utilized in the United States. By 2006, it was the third most improved primary school in the country. Riddle-Harte says working with teachers to develop a clear picture of their skills and capabilities, starting with their own self-assessment, was key to their progress. Now the school has performance management at its heart and when the academic year begins, teachers sit down with the head to decide on targets for improving pupil performance as well as their own professional development. Later trials followed against doctors, bankers, industrialists and others.Entirely composed of historical footage, including some newly discovered archival films, Nuremberg brings to life the challenge of administering justice when crimes are on such a scale. Fifty-five million people had been killed in World War II; seven million civilians in the Soviet Union alone. Although the first trial was concluded successfully with death or imprisonment for those found guilty, the subsequent trials were compromised by Cold War politics. The Soviet Union was now regarded as a threat by its former allies and a reconstructed Germany was to be a buffer. But in some areas tempers are rising as the mighty turbines draw their share of criticism. 120 km east of Naples, wind turbines pepper the skyline of the Appenini Mountains. Alone they are not going to eliminate Italy's carbon emissions, but they are a start. Orangutan Rescue- One of the most commonly used edible oils is palm oil. High in saturated fat, it's used in packaged food items from biscuits to ice cream, as well as soap, toothpaste and lipstick. It's also used for Biodiesel. 83 per cent of the world's palm oil is produced in Malaysia and Indonesia, where massive tracts of forest have been destroyed for palm plantations. Critics have dubbed the oil 'deforestation diesel'. Mexico Recycling- With a population of almost 9 million people, Mexico City generates 12,000 tonnes of waste every day. To cope, the city has introduced new laws to encourage recycling, requiring residents and businesses to do their bit for the environment. Sixteen new trucks provide separate space for organic rubbish which is composted and non-organic waste, much of which can be recycled. Eco Furniture- More and more people are choosing to buy greener and ethically made products. In the United States, gaining popularity is sustainable furniture--made with non-toxic, renewable materials. Today's eco-styles have come a long way--modern, progressive and edgy with many consumers even willing to pay extra for furniture with a green label. Carbon Capture- The biggest single emitters of carbon are fossil fuels. Coal, oil and gas contribute to an estimated 80 percent of greenhouse gases every year. Industry, transport and private cars all play a part. But a large and steadily growing area is coal-powered electricity generation.","stream","[]","[]","['Conservation of natural resources', 'Ecology', 'Recycling (Waste, etc.)', 'Renewable energy sources', 'Biodiesel fuels']","['Documentary films']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1005109xxx/1005109658/1005109658-disc001-file001-frame00180-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?ENVV;2123742" "asp2330339-marc","","Blood-Borne Pathogens. Yvonne Meier. Program no. 100","2013","85 min","['Dance in video, volume 2']","This program showcases the highly original work of New York post-modern choreographer Yvonne Meier. 'A true East Village renegade with a special talent for creating havoc ... long live Ms. Meier.' The New York Times This program includes a 2013 evening-length program of two different yet interconnected pieces titled 'This is not a pink pony 1' and 'This is not a pink pony 2'. '1' was a remount of the piece which premiered in 2008 at the Kitchen in New York City, cast with the same dancers: Osmany Tellez, Marion Ramirez and Arturo Vidich. It is a Dr. Zhivago-like love triangle in wintry wartime. Dancers attempt to jump rope while threatened by gunfire. Midway through all dancers switch off and so do the sexual tensions. In this urgent constellation, movement is tightly scored and full of jealousy and brutal revenge. 'This is not a pink pony 2' was created in 2013 with dancers Aki Sasamoto, Jeremy Pheiffer and Arturo Vidich. This piece deals with bullying as a way to turn out rough and complex relationships. As a departure from former scored improvisation this piece is a set choreography. Physical comedy is used as a release from the bitter tension running through this work. Dancers find themselves in unexpected situations that ask for unconventional solutions. This program also contains excerpts from 3 other dances by Yvonne Meier - 'Area 51', 'Mad Heidi' and 'The Shining' plus excerpts from an interview with the artist. Over the years, Yvonne Meier has developed a high-risk movement vocabulary that takes the audience through transformation by exhaustion. Her group pieces are wild, anarchic and provocative post-modern spectacles. She often creates environments such as in her work, 'The Shining' where the dancers are exposed to high-speed, complex, and eccentric movement scores, combining elements of danger and total physical commitment.","stream","[]","[]","['Choreographers', 'Postmodern dance', 'Dance']","['Filmed dance', 'Television interviews']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1005431xxx/1005431914/1005431914-disc001-file001-frame00180-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?DAV2;2598113" "asp3166494-marc","","Sunday morning. Birth and indigenous politics in Cañar, Ecuador","","37 minutes","[]","This unique ethnographic case study, filmed in the beautiful and diverse southern Andes of Ecuador, explores the shifting relationships between Ecuador's indigenous peoples and the national government. The mothers, midwives, and nurses featured in the film have experienced illness and health under conditions of both criminalized and decriminalized traditional medicine. Their stories illustrate the complex relationships between indigenous politics, social change, and health-care choices. In the words of Kim Clark, Prof. of Anthropology at the University of Western Ontario, the film will be pertinent viewing for ""all classes in gender, inter-ethnic relations, medical anthropology, and Latin American indigenous peoples, and wherever students are challenged to understand the complex negotiations over rights, culture, and power that orient intimate choices in the early twenty-first century."" The film skillfully interweaves intimate interviews with a variety of local women and documentary footage of two childbirths -- one at the birth-mother's home and the other in a village medical clinic -- to motivate viewers to question common Western assumptions about ""traditional"" and ""modern."" The film demonstrates that, even in an era of relentless globalization, the reasons for choices in childbirth practices are anything but straightforward. While the indigenous people view Western, biomedical birth as more ""modern,"" they are at the same time choosing to integrate traditional and Western medicine during pregnancy and childbirth by relying on local midwives for prenatal care, then giving birth in clinics and hospitals rather than at home. Women are electing pain medications and epidurals, yet at the same time there is a strong resurgence of traditional midwifery in the last decade, corresponding to the powerful increase in indigenous rights during that time. The film takes place in the rural market town of Cañar, the site of a vibrant spoke of the Indian Rights Movement. Among those featured in the film is Mama Mariana, a revered midwife and Ministry of Health nurse who is leading the movement to convince the State to allow midwives to assist in births at public hospitals and clinics. With its intimate interviews, expressive visuals, and incisive editing, From Our Strength will engage students and generate thought and discussion in a wide range of courses in cultural and medical anthropology, Latin American and Indigenous studies, and women's and gender studies. It was produced by award-winning filmmaker Patricia Keith and Suzanne Morrissey, Assistant Professor of Anthropology and Director of Gender Studies at Whitman College. The film is in Spanish and English.","stream","[]","['Ecuador']","['Indigenous women', 'Birth customs', 'Childbirth']","['Documentary films']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1007858xxx/1007858083/1007858083-disc001-file001-frame00500-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?MARC;3236489" "asp1003005999-ahiv","","One army","1960","28 min","['Big picture', 'American history in video']","","stream","['United States', 'National Guard', ""Reserve Officers' Training Corps"", 'Army']","[]","[]","[]","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1003005xxx/1003005999/1003005999-disc001-file001-frame00180-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?AHIV;774494" "asp2688935-ibus","","Kevin McGovern interview.
