Scenes from actual classrooms and teacher work sessions reveal how to look at student work through a collaborative process. Interviews with educators explain how critical review of student assignments benefits classrooms and schools. Use this DVD to give audiences an overview of why and how analyzing student work can improve teaching and learning and get an in-depth understanding of three proven approaches to examining student work through collaborative teams: The Tuning Protocol, Standards in Practice (SIP), and Collaborative Analysis of Student Learning. Following six children of gradually increasing ages, we'll see that movement is still an intrinsic part of learning for this age group. As the children follow their interests, we can see and hear them making new connections as they experiment and come up with new ideas. Outdoors, they are clearly motivated to learn at a deep level. During this year, the children's language, imagination and social skills are really taking off. The film focuses on these developments, as so much of their time outdoors is spent developing these skills in an environment that is full of possibilities. Medical and surgical techniques were highly advanced, as were observations of the sun, moon and stars. But, above all, their devotion to the gods was paramount. As part of his initiation into the filmmaking process, in early 2005 Azharr shot six interconnected DV shorts dealing with different moments in the relationship between two people, Harris and Amber. The six parts all stand alone, having very different visual styles and tones, and the suite remains very much a short film project; but when strung together the films also work as an odd kind of hybrid feature. It's probably worth reiterating at this point that the Amber films are exploratory short films by a young filmmaker learning the craft and as such are not intended to function as a conventional entertainment narrative. The films are not without their limitations, but they demonstrate a depth of ambition and thought which bodes well for Azharr's future work.","stream","[]","[]","['Man-woman relationships']","['Short films']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1006527xxx/1006527710/1006527710-disc001-file001-frame00190-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?ASV2;2737714" "asp3965113-marc","","American passages. American Passages: A Literary Survey is a 16-part American literature course. The course takes an expanded view of American literary movements, bringing in a diversity of voices and tracing the continuity among them. The materials, which are coordinated with the Norton Anthology of American Literature, can be used as the basis of a one or two-semester college-level course or for teacher professional development. Produced by Oregon Public Broadcasting. 2003. For many, the 1960s mark the true end of modern America. Whereas the modernists remained serious about the transcendent nature of art, the artists of the 1960s wanted an art that was relevant. They wanted an art that not only spoke about justice, but also helped create it. Starting in the 1960 s a number of independent publications reviewed the mainstream news media, playing a watch-dog role by calling attention to important stories that were overlooked or misrepresented. The St. Louis Journalism Review was the last of these independent publications. Often it was a lone dissenting voice at a time when corporate domination of journalism threatened the citizens right to know. This fascinating film conveys the little known story of Charles and Rose Klotzer, founders of the SJR. The life of the courageous journalist and media watchdog spans some of the most tumultuous periods in recent history. Classroom sequences reveal many ways that teachers in every grade level can create and manage an active and engaging learning environment where instructional decisions are based on students' varied readiness levels and interests. While viewing the whole-class morning message meeting, language arts center time, a small-group portfolio session, a social studies lesson, and end-of-day activities, discover many tips that make a differentiated classroom work. See how to use a flexible approach to teaching and learning based on students' varied needs. Frame a standards-based curriculum around important concepts and ideas. Foster a strong sense of community with an emphasis on every student's value and growth as a learner. Work with students who are active, involved learners and who make decisions and share responsibility for learning. Engage in ongoing assessment of learning and encourage students to assess their own work each day. The child was diagnosed with pineal tumor and hydrocephalus at the age of 7 months. Ventriculoperitoneal shunt was implanted and microsurgical biopsy was performed through a transcallosal approach. Histology was in favour of immature teratoma. Three cycles of chemotherapy were administered but tumor continued to grow and the patient was referred for surgical treatment. The surgical strategy to approach the lesion is extensively described. Due to the dimensions (8x5x6 cm) the tumor could not be removed in a single procedure and staged resection was planned. The first procedure was performed through posterior interhemispheric transtentorial approach, allowing significant debulking of the lower two/thirds of the lesion. The second procedure was performed three weeks later through anterior interhemispheric transcallosal approach that allow subtotal removal of the supratentorial component. The third procedure, re-opening the previous transcallosal approach, allowed subtotal resection of the intraventricular mass. The last paraventricular nodule was removed one week later with endoscopic approach using endoscopic ultrasonic aspirator. After four surgical procedures, complete macroscopic removal was achieved and the patient was referred to oncologists for high-dose chemotherapy with autologous bone-marrow transplantation. Total removal of the tumor was therefore achieved with four procedures.","stream","[]","[]","['Infants', 'Pineal gland', 'Tumors']","['Instructional films', 'Case studies']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/content/1010544xxx/1010544330/1010544330-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?MARC;4691312" "asp2859612-ahiv","","Your weekly address. Is it possible to describe living systems, or even small pieces of living systems, with the same concepts developed elsewhere in our ramble through physics? We begin with a discussion of whether physics can tell us if something is, in fact, alive. In the reductionist spirit, we then consider the physical principles that govern the constituent molecules of biological systems—and their emergent properties. From DNA and proteins, we move on to evolution and how it is physically possible for a species to genetically adapt to its environment quickly enough to survive. Variety. One of the noblest achievements of pre-war Soviet cinema, (Jay Leyda, Kino), this haunting, unforgettable film is based upon Maxim Gorky's 1913 autobiography, My Childhood, and shows a twelve-year-old's journey in life against the tumultuous backdrop of 19th century Russia. With tableaux beautifully vivid and forceful, it recounts the touching relationships which develop when Gorky is put into his grandparents' custody. His grandmother, the consummate incarnation of good and truth, is a simple woman who knows how to make people laugh. She presents the genuine beauty of optimism in the direst situations, of honesty in a world of deceit, of unselfishness and total sacrifice around treachery and hatred, of fighting spirit in defense of values and dignity. His multi-faceted grandfather, who can be fiercely brutal and childishly tender, senile one moment and wise the next, etches another indelible memory. Gorky's poverty-stricken childhood formed his life-long compassion for the underdog, and the film is filled with powerful portraits of lower-class people whose qualities of integrity and dignity shine through their hopeless circumstances. Among many others are the half-blind Grigori who works at the grandfather's dye factory and who is taunted by his co-workers before finally succumbing to total blindness to become a down-and-out beggar, and Gorky’s little orphaned friends, who live out of garbage cans dreaming of a Utopian Neverland. From these portraits come an inspiring, panoramic view of human conditions and conflicts. This edition is restored from a fine grain master and includes the original 1938 soundtrack by Lev Schwartz, as well as new English subtitles. Presented at the end of the main feature is the bonus short newsreel, Moscow Clad in Snow, which shows scenes of the pre-Revolutionary city during winter. It was shot in 1908 and directed by Joseph-Louis Mundwiller, who would later go on to be one of the cinematographers on Abel Gance’s Napoleon.","stream","['Gorky, Maksim']","[]","[]","['Feature films', 'Biographical films', 'Film adaptations', 'Fiction films']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1008864xxx/1008864796/1008864796-disc001-file001-frame00180-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?MARC;3564059" "asp4053127-marc","","Eco solutions. The mass injection of cash that followed fundamentally changed British society - financially, politically, commercially, and culturally. Forgotten Slave Owners offers a fascinating, in-depth look at a key moment in British - a time of great change that continues to be felt today. This presentation is ideal for those who want an easy to understand yet comprehensive overview of the role of nutrition and supplementation and lifestyle in maintaining mental health and as treatment for mental health problems. While nutritional medicine is one of the most interesting and important areas to understand and treat mental health issues, it should be understood that the field is rapidly advancing and by definition new discoveries will provide additional information not covered here. In the 15th century, eight hundred monasteries in England owned one third of the nation's land. Many monks were living in palatial monasteries and were patrons of the finest art and architecture. Janina examines monastery kitchen records and the bones of a medieval monk to discover the truth behind accusations of monastic gluttony and vice. She also explores how the arrival of the printing press put paid to the monasteries' monopoly of publishing and education. Janina then traces the story of the dissolution of the monasteries under Henry VIII and Thomas Cromwell. She explores whether the dissolution was the violent action of a greedy and overbearing monarch or if it was the inevitable 'end of days' for a rotten and outmoded institution. She uncovers stories of shocking corruption alongside examples of extraordinary pious sacrifice. The Wonder of Animals celebrates the most successful animal groups on Earth - from apes to elephants, ants to bears. Discover why, despite appearing clumsy and comical, penguins actually have an anatomy that is perfect for their environment and how the dominance of big cats is down to more than just their brawn. New science is combined with the very latest animal behaviour research and extensive BBC natural history HD archive footage to build a complete picture of each animal, revealing how its unique characteristics have contributed to its success. Chris Packham explores the evolution of the great ape's brain to reveal how different parts have been adapted over time by its anatomy, ingenuity and sociability, culminating in one of the most complex brains on the planet. Chris examines how the ability to use two hands asymmetrically sets the great ape apart from other tool-using animals and how social living is linked to the evolution of the amygdala in both humans and our ape cousins. New research reveals how bonobos' peace-loving reputation may have developed through a similar domestication process to that undergone by our pet dogs.","stream","[]","[]","['Animals', 'Apes', 'Animal behavior']","['Wildlife television programs', 'Documentary television programs']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1009922xxx/1009922794/1009922794-disc001-file001-frame00265-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?MARC;4035864" "asp3165360-marc","","Sunday morning. It's also the last chance to breed, to grow up, to stock up before the cold returns. And during winter – the most magical, dramatic season of all – animals find inventive ways to survive. In this episode, narrated by Andrew Scott, celebrates the drama of autumn and how animals and plants deal with the new challenges it brings.
