Like Ecce Homo, his much-loved life-size statue of Christ created for Trafalgar Square, the exhibition provoked and challenged and moved many of those who experienced it. Mark Wallinger's art is often witty and immediately accessible yet at the same time it engages with some of the traditional grand themes, including religion, spirituality and death. His recent works include the ambitious environment Prometheus, centred around a wall-mounted electric chair, and Threshold to the Kingdom which counterpoints the arrival of passengers at an international airport (and perhaps also in Heaven) with Allegri's beautiful music for the Miserere. In this film profile Wallinger considers the meanings and motivations of his art. Recently retired and with time on his hands, he decides to write a novel. He does not decide to make up a story. There is no need to. He can draw on his own past as a civil servant for a true, moving and tragic story in which he was once very directly involved. In 1974, his court was assigned an investigation into the rape and murder of a beautiful young woman. At the scene of the crime, Esposito sees the result of the young woman's rape and murder first hand. He meets Ricardo Morales, who had married the girl a short time before and worshipped her body and soul. Moved by Ricardo's grief, Esposito tries to help him find the culprit despite having to contend with the apathy and ineptitude of the police and legal system. He knows that for help he can count on Sandoval, an underling at the office yet a close friend, who occasionally seeks release from the routine of his existence by drinking himself unconscious. He can also turn to Irene, his immediate superior and secretary of the court, with whom he is secretly deeply in love, although there is no hope that she will ever love him. The search for the murderer is anything but simple. No clues remain at the scene of the crime and Esposito must rely on guesswork and his own instincts to make any progress. Furthermore, Argentina in 1974 is not a peaceful place. It is a perfect backdrop for the violence, hate, revenge and death that rule people's lives and fates. To this ever more hostile and dark setting, Esposito's investigation takes him deep into a world of terrible violence. No longer an observer, he becomes an unwilling central character in a drama in which he is exposed to ever-greater danger. But it is not only the young Esposito of 1974 who is swept along by the storm of events, for that storm also envelops the present-day Esposito, the old would-be writer, and sets him adrift. By deciding to revive and relive his memories, he has set in motion the wheels of the terrible mechanism of memory. And those memories are neither innocent, neutral nor aseptic. Esposito writes, and as he does so, relives a past that rises up before his eyes and awakens all his demons: particularly those involving his past decisions, uncertainties and irreparable mistakes. As he moves forward, Esposito begins to see that it is now too late to stop. Telling a story from the past is no longer just a pastime to fill his empty hours. It becomes a narrow, winding path he must take if he is to understand and find justification for his own life, if he is to give any meaning to the years remaining to him, and if once and for all he is to face up to the woman who, thirty years on, he is still in love with.","stream","['Sacheri, Eduardo A']","['Argentina']","['Judicial corruption', 'Criminal investigation', 'Man-woman relationships', 'Murder', 'Rape']","['Feature films', 'Fiction films']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/content/1008313xxx/1008313925/1008313925-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?MARC;3360758" "asp2498248-cjv2","","Transforming trauma. It is therefore important to break this cycle of disadvantage by enabling Pakistani and Bangladeshi parents and carers to become involved and more active, especially in supporting language and literacy activities. The Plot to Overthrow FDR reveals how, inspired by political trends in Germany and Italy, this group conceived of a plan to either overthrow the newly-elected president or force him to take orders from them. They envisioned a paramilitary organization of disgruntled WWI veterans as the force to intimidate the government. The man they chose to inspire and lead this veteran's army was retired Marine General Smedley D. Butler, a colorful and outspoken champion of veteran's rights. But Butler was their undoing. As schools are focused more and more on increasing academic rigor, in part because of the emphasis placed on rigor in all of the various state standards, it's a question every teacher is asking. In this video from ASCD, Robyn Jackson dispels the confusion by presenting the clear and concise definition of academic rigor she's developed over time and working with teachers to show them what rigor looks like in practice. Visit a variety of different schools to see real teachers who are using Jackson's field-tested methods to successfully boost academic rigor in their classrooms. You'll witness these teachers helping students to construct meaning for themselves; impose structure on information that allows them to think accurately, consider multiple meanings, and engage in disciplined inquiry and thought; integrate their skills into processes; and apply what they've learned in more than one context and to unpredictable situations. But how and why did this crisis in the Balkans escalate into a bloody global conflagration? Did Britain really have to fight a war against Germany? And what did this war say about humankind's propensity for violence? In this fascinating and fresh take on the Great War, Harvard historian Professor Niall Ferguson argues that much of the responsibility for the scale of the conflict lies with the British. This is a pupil resource, and teachers can use it in a range of lessons about historical sources and interpreting the past. Two groups of pupils go on a quest to find out how history gets on the screen. Key contributors include historical consultant Robin Lane-Fox from the Oliver Stone epic 'Alexander', experimental archaeologist Bob Savage from the Royal Armouries and Oscar winning costume designer Jenny Beavan. The programme explores how filmmakers use many of the same techniques and resources as 'proper' historians. In the final part we discover that historians can learn from the filmmakers through the manufacture and testing of arms and costumes that had often only been studied in texts and architectural sources. This is the first attempt in television to discover the landscape and wildlife of America after the last Ice Age. The series features amazing re-animations of such animals as the sabre-toothed tiger and woolly mammoth and, using computer graphics, returns lions, cheetahs and zebras to North America where they lived thousands of years ago. This look at the past provides a unique perspective on North American wildlife of today, including those creatures who now depend upon people and cities for their survival. Modern day North America is far removed from the continent first encountered by people 13,000 years ago. Today it is dominated by symbols of human culture; then it was dominated by mammoths and sabre-toothed cats. This final programme examines the evidence for the cause of the Ice Age extinctions and takes a journey through time to see how the survivors have adapted to the altered landscape of North America. From mammoth hunting through to the rise of the skyscraper we see how wildlife has adapted to a human-controlled New World. Built for the needs of people, cities have also become home to all manner of North American wildlife. Moose roam through downtown Anchorage during the winter, eating people's garden plants and destroying Christmas tree lights. The Walk Experience","","45 minutes","[]","Once a year in the Cuzco region of Peru, the former center of the Inca empire, some 50,000 pilgrims flock to the highest sanctuary of the world to participate in the largest pilgrimage of the Andean region. The sanctuary of the Senor de Qoyllur Rit'i (Lord of the Shiny Snow) is located nearly 16,000 feet above sea level, at the foot of the Qollqepunku glacier.Traditionally, pilgrims walked from their towns performing their music and dance to visit this miraculous image of Christ on a rock. Today, however, most pilgrims reach the area by truck or bus and only hike uphill the final five miles to reach the sanctuary. The pilgrimage combines longstanding Andean principles and practices and those brought into the tradition by Catholicism. This insightful and beautifully filmed documentary focuses on the comparsas or dance troupes from the community of Pomacanchi, Cuzco, that continue the tradition of walking all the way to the sanctuary, covering 85 miles up and down mountains in three days and two nights, accompanied by the incessant music of flutes and drums. After another two-and-a-half days and two nights at the site, where they perform their ritual dances and participate in an unremitting musical experience, these Quechua-speaking pilgrims return home and leave the site deserted. The film deftly interweaves footage from three separate pilgrimages in which the filmmaker participated to provide a close and detailed depiction of the pilgrims' experiences and explore the importance of the unity of sound, sight, and movement to the construction of meaning and memory to them. Since Quechua-speaking Andeans best learn and remember through the integration of the three, their dance, music, and religious festivals are shown to be central to their social reality. In addition to its remarkable depiction of the long and profound journey to the sanctuary, the film also includes scenes of important activities in the community of Pomacanchi before and after the pilgrimage, as well as remarkable footage of the ceremonial rituals at the sanctuary. Colorful, intense, and absorbing, The Pilgrimage to the Sanctuary of the Lord of Qoyllur Rit'i will generate thought and discussion in a wide range of classes in Latin American and Andean studies, cultural anthropology, comparative religion, and ethnomusicology, and will be essential for any class studying pilgrimage traditions, religious practices, and indigenous performances in the Americas. Our first port of call is Ketchikan, Alaska's first city, where we visit a state park to learn the significance of native-carved totem poles. Then we take a helicopter ride to Mendenhall Glacier, where we land to view the ice falls and formations. Glacier Bay National Park is our destination on the fourth day of the cruise. This is the perfect place to spot whales and other sea life, and a park ranger explains the many types of wildlife that are in the area. As the ship turns southward, our last stop is the historic town of Sitka. Once the central trading center for Russian furs, the Russian culture can now be seen in the traditional folk costumes and dances of the performers who entertain each night. Throughout his extraordinary career, Altman has surprised, entertained and challenged audiences with vibrant, freewheeling films that stretch the boundaries of the medium. With THE COMPANY, this iconic director brings his fluid, masterful camera-work to the world of dance. Altman's vision for the film is an extremely intimate one: we will see the difficult daily work, the intense pressures of performance, the richly textured behaviors of the dancers -- whose professional and personal lives grow impossibly close -- and of course the sheer beauty of dance: exhilarating, kinetic, and thrilling. The authenticity and richness of THE COMPANY is rooted in the unprecedented way in which Altman will shoot the film: with the complete cooperation of the Joffrey Ballet of Chicago. Screenwriter Barbara Turner (POLLACK, GEORGIA) spent over two years on and off with the Joffrey, observing and writing. Joffrey dancers will constitute the core of Altman's ensemble. The only actor who will be working as part of the Joffrey corps is Neve Campbell (the popular SCREAM movies and the television show ""Party of Five""). Campbell, an accomplished dancer, studied with The National Ballet of Canada before becoming an actress. She originated THE COMPANY, the culmination of a long-held dream to create a nuanced and realistic film about a world for which she has deep and abiding affection. Campbell's role in the film is that of a gifted but conflicted company member on the verge of becoming a principal dancer. Rounding out the cast is Malcolm McDowell (A CLOCKWORK ORANGE, O LUCKY MAN!, GANGSTER NO. 1) who stars as Alberto, the visionary director of the company and James Franco (JAMES DEAN, CITY BY THE SEA) who plays a young sous chef. THE COMPANY, as Altman envisions it, might best be described in terms suited themselves to dance: fluid, sexy, intimate, alive. It is a love letter to artists who work in this singularly difficult and universally expressive medium, to the people who make the performance possible, and to dance itself.","stream","[]","[]","['Ballet companies', 'Ballet', 'Ballet dancers']","['Feature films', 'Fiction films']","https://media.proquest.com/media/asp/asp-drm/1008297233/thumbnail.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?MARC;3360756" "asp3989856-marc","","Think before you drink","","26 minutes","[]","What we choose to quench our thirst matters more than you might think. For many in the West there remains a fascination with Uncle Ho, the frail, idealistic leader who against seemingly insurmountable odds humiliated two of the world s strongest armies, the American and the French. This film, based on newsreel footage and interviews with contemporaries, traces the story of his life. Born into a mandarin family in 1890 when Indochina was part of the French empire, he gravitated towards Paris like many in his generation. There he founded the Indochinese Communist Party, calling for an independent Indochina composed of Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. The following years were spent between Russia and Asia where he learned guerrilla warfare from MaoTse Tung. His big chance came during World War II when the Japanese occupied Indochina. The film goes on to show how his army, the Viet Minh, drove them out and then went on to fight the French for control of the country. Independence for North Vietnam was achieved with the defeat of the French at Dien Bien Phu. He never lived to see the victory over the Americans or the unification of Vietnam.","stream","['Hố€, Chí Minh']","['Vietnam']","['Presidents']","['Documentary films']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/content/1003831xxx/1003831107/1003831107-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?FLON;1646839" "asp3924429-marc","","Senior program manager education, Google","","2 minutes","[]","Jordan is a Senior Program Manager at Google.
