Nevada. US","","22 minutes","['Exploring the world']","Located near the California-Nevada border, Reno has earned the title, ""biggest little city in the world,"" given to it in the 1920s when gaming became a popular tourist attraction. In comparison, nearby Virginia City is a ghost town. In 1859 the Comstock Lode, the biggest silver find in the world, was discovered, and Virginia City was established as a booming mining town, lush with silver barons' mansions and over 750 miles of mining tunnels under the city. Today those boom days have been re-created, and tourists can get the flavor of what the city was like in the 19th century by visiting a silver mine and learning about the process or visiting the newspaper office where Samuel Clemens was a reporter before he became Mark Twain. Back in Reno, we learn that the transcontinental railroad saved this city, built in 1868 as a mining town. As Virginia City declined, Reno became a thriving trading center due to convenient transportation, and when gaming was legalized in the early 20th century, Reno became a neon world that never shuts down. Although casinos are the most popular entertainment, there are other attractions as well. The National Bowling Stadium, with 80 championship lanes and high-tech equipment, is a place where the entire family can have fun. The painting's numerous vitreous enamel panels were created in a German factory where they were baked at fearsomely high temperatures. This film follows the artist as he creates this remarkable public artwork. Like all of Ian Davenport's work, Poured Lines rigorously explores the qualities and possibilities of paint but is at the same time a joyful and exuberant composition. It also responds to the city around it, enhancing the colours and movements of a busy road. Ian Davenport showed in the near-legendary ""Freeze"" exhibition, organised by Damien Hirst, in 1988 and he was nominated for the Turner Prize in 1991. But as his paintings have evolved over two decades, his central concerns of colour and abstraction, experiment and the everyday, have remained strikingly consistent. It will encourage frank discussion on of subjects such as safe sex for both straight and lesbian women, health care for HIV positive women, and advocacy efforts. Despite attempts at education, HIV is still thought of as a male, gay disease, even by doctors and health care workers. This sometimes results in women being improperly diagnosed, even if they exhibit classic symptoms. In addition, women have a difficult time insisting on safe sex since they are often afraid to antagonize their partners. Understanding safe sex means being clear about the level of risk of transmission in different sexual activities. This issue is explored at a safe sex workshop for men and women led by an experienced health educator. In another setting, the risk of HIV infection for lesbians is discussed. Tradition meets high jinks for 2010 as Jiri Belohlavek conducts his second Last Night, while the spirit of Henry Wood presides, as always, over the grand finale of the Proms. Renee Fleming lends her lustrous soprano to music by Strauss, Dvorak and Smetana. Far from it. Art critic and journalist Alastair Sooke demonstrates it is in fact far more diverse and surprising -- a multi-cultural mix of styles, techniques and materials that left no subject matter unexplored. Filmed in sumptuous locations around the Mediterranean and across Europe, Alastair shows how a limited view of Ancient Greek art just does not hold up. His journey takes him from the bucolic beauty of early Minoan and Mycenaean art to striking works full of eroticism and drunken hedonism and culminates in some of the most breathtakingly exquisite art the world has ever seen. Considered, thoughtful and enthralling, this series offers a fresh understanding and new perspective on an incredible period of art. Alastair Sooke unpicks the reasons behind the dazzling revolution that gave birth to classical Greek art, asking how the Greeks got so good so quickly. He travels to the beautiful Valley of the Temples in Agrigento, and to the island of Mozia to see the astonishing charioteer found there in 1979, and marvels at the athletic bodies of the warriors dragged from the seabed - the Riace Bronzes. It was a creative explosion that covered architecture, sculpting in marble, casting in bronze, even painting on vases. An evidence-based practice has four key components: it must be a standardized treatment with guidelines or manuals; it must have been studied using a controlled research design; the research studies must have employed a variety of research teams; and, the outcomes must matter to the recipient of the care. Selection of an evidence-based practice must take into account not only the treatment, but the characteristics of the person and the desired effect. While evidence-based practices are proven, many good practices are still viable and should not be abandoned. Ending therapy","2009","51 min","['Counseling and therapy in video, volume 3']","Ending can be difficult to accept particularly when it involves a relationship that has been positive and supportive. Therapy is just such a relationship. This DVD is full of opportunities for discussion and explores many of the issues related to ending counselling. It demonstrates, in two sessions, the process of ending a long-established therapeutic relationship with the same client. In the first session the client attempts to end the therapy without exploring her feelings about what it might mean for her and the counsellor uses their relationship to challenge this. This stage of the counselling process can sometimes be difficult for both counsellor and client and may require delicate handling. The session shows that the feelings and concerns of both parties need to be explicitly and honestly addressed. It addresses issues of separation, the difference between friendship and therapeutic relationship and reveals some of the childhood experiences that lie behind the client's fearful reactions. In her introduction the counsellor describes managing endings in both long and short term situations. She provides an ongoing commentary to the sessions, reflecting on the interactions, her understanding of the client's implicit process, and she explains her interventions. We see the client move from a defensive, self protective position to the final session where she is confident and ready to say good bye. Both she and her counsellor can now achieve a real sense of completion and gain profound insight even in the final moments.","stream","[]","[]","['Psychotherapy', 'Therapist and patient']","['Nonfiction films']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1004913xxx/1004913202/1004913202-disc001-file001-frame00205-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?CTIV;2287108" "asp99265679400971","","Cell division","","12 minutes","[]","Paul Andersen explains how cells duplicate through the process of cell division. Made up of vivid real-world examples, our goal is to present statistics in the context of its contemporary use. Host Dr. Pardis Sabeti guides viewers through the wide range of statistical applications used by scientists, business owners, and even Shakespeare scholars, in their work and daily lives. Starting with descriptive statistics, the series continues through probability and inference. Each unit builds on preceding ones to expand students' statistical knowledge and solidify their understanding of how the concepts fit together. It also shows how physical play has such an important role in a child's ability to become an independent learner. As we follow children during their day to day business within several settings, you will gain an in depth understanding of precisely what they are learning and how this supports their physical development and ability to become self regulating.Together with looking at the holistic development and learning taking place during physical play, there is a comprehensive section about adult support. In this section, you will see how, as a practitioner, you can best apply this knowledge to your everyday practice. Clear examples of ‘modelling', ‘scaffolding', ‘specific praise' (and more), will allow you to confidently improve key relationships and effectively support independent learning and self regulation. Aspects of risk are also included. Made in collaboration with David Whitebread of Cambridge University, we present all current research and theories on physical play in a straightforward way. The accompanying user guide booklet (written by Whitebread, ) will help you to plan your training session. The four girls took part in a video workshop at the Teesta Home, a small foster home operated by an Indian non-government organization. The three films they made explore the textures and events of their daily lives in the home, focusing on play, study, their personal relationships, and their hopes and dreams for the future. The films provide an intimate picture of an institution in which eight girls who have suffered various forms of deprivation and abuse can find a settled life and personal fulfillment. A striking feature of their films is their sensitivity to the world around them and the role of the imagination in their lives. The workshop was coordinated by Rowena Potts as part of the 'Childhood and Modernity' Project, directed by renowned ethnographic filmmaker David MacDougall and supported by The Australian National University and the Australian Research Council. The films are in Bengali, with English subtitles. The three films are as follows:Our House by Saraswati Nebu (21 min.)In this film Saraswati documents the rhythms of daily life in the Teesta foster home where she lives with seven other young girls. She investigates the many dimensions of an institution that has become her home - from the physical layout of the house, to the varied activities undertaken by the girls and their caretakers, to the relationships forged between the girls and the communal life they share. The film incorporates interviews conducted by Saraswati with Avita and Payel, two of the other young residents (and also filmmakers), who speak openly about their lives and hopes for the future. The film contains scenes of the girls studying, singing, dancing, playing, sleeping, and eating together. It paints an intimate portrait of a self-contained world that engages their attention and imagination in unexpected ways. At various points in the film Saraswati mounts the camera on a tripod to film her own participation in the activities of the house, and, with great sincerity, sings the classic Bengali folksongs that she loves. The Fun of Playing by Payel Sarkar and Avita Sarkar (15 min.)Payel and Avita decided to make a film together when it became clear that they both wanted to document the play activities, including their own, of the girls in the home. Their combined footage paints a vivid and detailed portrait of the diverse forms of play that the eight residents of the Teesta home routinely engage in. Their film contains varied scenes of street hopscotch, nursery rhymes, play with dolls, make-believe, making paper boats to float in the flooded monsoon streets, rough-housing, and private moments of storytelling told to the camera. The film provides a fascinating insight into the girls' world of play, fantasy, and imagination, the material objects that are meaningful in these activities, and the relationships forged in the process - with the intimacy of a child's perspective, and an access not afforded in films made by adults. The film closes with an extended shot of Payel dancing on the balcony in the rain, on the cusp of adolescence.Inside Outside by Soma Chatterjee (12 min.)This film is Soma's poetic documentation of the world around her, combined with her whimsical and introspective observation of herself within it. With patient camera work, her film unfolds from a place of deep curiosity and sensitivity to the environment in which she lives. Starting with a striking examination of her own reflection in a mirror, the film is shaped by Soma's careful attention to the behavior of animals and birds, the sounds and patterns of Kolkata's monsoon season, and the varied activities that take place in her neighborhood.Much of Soma's film is shot through the windows or from the balconies of the Teesta home where she lives, where she trains her camera on street-hawkers, laborers, and passersby as they go about their lives in the street below.","stream","[]","['Kolkata (India)', 'India']","['Children', 'Families']","['Documentary films']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1007858xxx/1007858082/1007858082-disc001-file001-frame00075-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?MARC;3236487" "asp4037994-marc","","Horizon. In doing so, they took on their life's major work--a conservation, breeding and rewilding program for endangered Macaws. Once a common sight, the great green and the scarlet Macaw are now endangered. They've suffered massive loss of habitat including the Almendro tree, on which their survival depends. Recycled House- Set in vast English park lands, Stanmer House was built in 1727, complete with its own church. It was the ancestral home of the Earls of Chichester, who played host to Queen Victoria and Sir Winston Churchill. Now the local council owns the mansion and its new neighbour, the striking Brighton Earthship, an eco-friendly building originally designed for the deserts of New Mexico. Tree rings In Argentina's Patagonia- There is a sense of another time. Stories Abound of the Nessie-like monster of lake Nahuel Huapi. And the ancient, majestic forest evokes thoughts of Tolkien's Middle-Earth. The slow-growing Alerce trees have been known to live for over three and a half thousand years and grow more than 50 metres high. Standing for centuries they could tell us a thing or two, and they do. Canned Hunting- Animals living in South Africa's National Parks are fortunate--they are protected. But not so the estimated 3,000 lions living in cages or trapped behind fences in captive breeding centres. For these animals there is no protection from the ultimate predatory animal. This is the world of canned hunting--where money speaks for itself, but an animal can't. Where the trust of a hand-reared lion is betrayed and the rule book is shredded. Kolyma River- Sadly, in today's world, many rivers are dying. But deep in Russia's harshest environment, Arctic Siberia, what was once known as 'the river of death' is now a lifeline for local people. Winding through the permafrost is the Kolyma River. Under Stalin, the Kolyma region was the centre of the Gulag labour camps, where one million people died. Norway Seed Vault- It's known as the doomsday vault, but hopefully that's a bit melodramatic. The Svalbard Global Seed Vault has however been built to withstand earthquakes, nuclear strikes and major climate change. Yet, as this profile demonstrates, his art over the past decade has embraced an exciting and diverse range of materials, including lead, ice, wax, glass, frozen flowers and even DNA. His sculptures include both figurative and semi-abstract forms, but each engages with his key preoccupations: life and mortality, self and identity, nature and the world of science. His drawings and photographs similarly teem with ideas about being alive -- and about facing death -- in today's world. In this profile, Marc Quinn speaks eloquently and thoughtfully about many of his key works, including his recent series of classical marble portraits of amputees and people born without limbs, as well as the moving portrait of his son Lucas as a baby modelled from frozen placenta.","stream","['Quinn, Marc']","['England']","['Sculptors', 'Art, British', 'Art, Modern']","['Interviews', 'Documentary television programs']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1010142xxx/1010142440/1010142440-disc001-file001-frame00180-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?MARC;4240454" "asp1742552-ediv","","Starting early","2006","13 min","['School councils']","Starting Early showcases the advantages of introducing school councils at nursery and infant level. Rebirth. Series 1, Episode 6","","59 minutes","['Serengeti']","In this final episode, it's time to close another chapter in the lives of the animals of the Serengeti, the end of an extraordinary year for them all. But first, all around is a blackened smoking wasteland, the aftermath of the huge fire. Which of the families made it out alive and who is still missing? Torrential rain brings hope and the land is reborn into a green paradise as water quenches the scorched earth. Mirroring the changes in the landscape, the cycle of death and rebirth comes to the fore as the Serengeti's elders prepare their young for adulthood and a life on their own. Lioness Kali is alive, but one of her three cubs is missing. Kike the cheetah returns and must train her grown-up cubs to survive on their own. The short, lush grasslands make the perfect training grounds for her lessons of survival. She teaches them to stalk, chase and trip their prey. A giraffe, grieving over the unexplained death of her calf, interrupts the cubs' training regime. Leader of the wild dogs Jasari is also showing his pups how to survive on their own, but when he teaches them to fight off hyenas, they too are interrupted by the grieving giraffe. In the flooded river, elephant matriarch Nalla's baby struggles in the torrents. Bakari returns when a huge fight with a rival baboon troop threatens his family, and he shows his bravery once more. Kali has yet more surprises in store which bring hope for her and her pride's future. Kike has to leave her cubs and hope that they are ready for independence. With the death of an old male elephant, all the families come together and old rivalries end in a remarkable truce. With a new regime in place among the baboons, the harmony of nature is restored and for now, the future is bright for the families of the Serengeti.","stream","[]","['Serengeti National Park (Tanzania)', 'Tanzania']","['Savanna animals', 'Animals']","['Wildlife television programs', 'Nature television programs', 'Documentary television programs']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1010538xxx/1010538172/1010538172-disc001-file001-frame00180-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?MARC;4689581" "asp2193633-ahiv","","In Arizona","1920","4 min","['American history in video']","This documentary, produced by the Ford Motor Company, features Arizona.","stream","[]","['Arizona']","[]","['Documentary films']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1005154xxx/1005154050/1005154050-disc001-file001-frame00180-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?AHIV;2193633" "asp2322565-dav2","","Pas à pas","1982","6 min","['Dance in video, volume 2']","This film by Dominique Delouche is of a performance by Patrick Dupond and Jouhn Neumeier of a duet from Petrouchka.","stream","[]","[]","['Ballet']","['Filmed dance']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1005964xxx/1005964003/1005964003-disc001-file001-frame00180-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?DAIV;2322565" "asp3164254-marc","","Sunday morning. Religious rituals remain embedded in the major events of our lives. In Life After Death, evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins asks what happens if we leave religion behind. He explores what reason and science might offer to inspire and guide our lives in religion's place. Can science bring understanding in the face of death, help us tell right from wrong or reveal the point of life in the first place? In a journey that takes him through visually stunning locations across the world, Richard Dawkins builds a powerful argument for facing up to the scientific truth about Life After Death--however hard that might be. In that regard, the video points out that clinicians recognize that the primary pathology underlying cardiovascular disease is inflammation. Accordingly, the video reviews the need for inflammation testing, which involves a group of blood and urine tests that provide a complete picture of cardiovascular risk. Incorporating inflammation testing into health promotion programs can help identify apparently healthy people (with normal serum lipids) who are at near-term for a cardiovascular event. Such testing can also be used to monitor health status improvement. The video emphasizes the fact that inflammation testing provides sophisticated risk stratification that enables providers and payers to more accurately target health and wellness efforts.","stream","[]","[]","['Heart', 'Cardiovascular system']","['Nonfiction films', 'Educational films']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1007018xxx/1007018039/1007018039-disc001-file001-frame00180-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?SPX2;3180073" "asp3366496-marc","","Doctors in the war zone","","48 minutes","[]","This compelling film follows the medical teams risking their lives to save others in Syria.
