Today, she travels back to the country to explore how the bard became an icon in a world far removed from the country of his birth. From bustling cities to remote villages, Felicity talks with dancers, farmers, prison officers, school teachers, and others to get their perspectives on the role of Shakespeare in Indian life. MAKING THE WORLD MILES BETTER is the day's slogan and the idea is to get as many schools as possible involved in learning, fun and fundraising by doing a mile (or more) in an active way--whether it's skipping round the playground, a red-sock relay or even a vertical mile for those who love rock climbing! Activities in school can happen at any time this summer term, and money raised will go to vulnerable children in the UK and around the globe. The Manitoba government brought further disaster to this community by unilaterally deciding to build a 100 million dollar water channel beside their reserve and to relocate the community against their will to an old military base.","stream","[]","['Manitoba, Northern']","['Sustainable agriculture', 'Indians of North Amerca', 'Floods']","['Documentary films', 'Nonfiction films']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1007982xxx/1007982645/1007982645-disc001-file001-frame00180-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?MARC;3265676" "asp1742836-ediv","","The play project","2006","13 min","['Action! teacher video']","In this episode you can see a video created by two pupils at Freshford CE Primary School near Bath about The Play Project . It follows the audacious espionage mission of a botanist, Robert Fortune, who in the mid 18th century was entrusted by the East India Trading company to wrest the secret of tea production from Imperial China, the sole supplier of this prized beverage. China had been growing tea for over 5,000 years and fiercely guarded its monopoly. To satisfy Europe's taste for the beverage, Britain had to buy tea with silver because it had no commodity the Chinese wanted to exchange for tea. But then opium came into the picture. By growing opium in India and exporting it to China the British turned a quarter of the Chinese population into addicts. When the Chinese Emperor banned the importation of opium, the infamous Opium Wars began. The British then turned their attention to tea, engaging Robert Fortune to steal the prized plants along with the secrets of how to grow it in the Himalayas. In Fortune's own words from his journal, the film details how this mission was accomplished. Composing music. 8","","28 minutes","['The power of music']","According to a survey by the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), music educators find the national standard about creating music to be the most challenging. The New York Philharmonic Very Young Composers program is based on the premise that creating music is an activity that should not be limited to a highly trained, elite group of adults. Founded by composer and bassist Jon Deak, the program assumes that all children - whether or not they can play an instrument - have the capacity to express musical ideas. The program is nurturing young composers in multiple states across the U.S. and several countries around the world, including Venezuela. At P.S. 11 in Brooklyn, Jon and composer/teaching artist Angélica Negrón help fourth and fifth graders record their musical ideas using graphic notation. Students consult a list Angélica posts in the classroom to more fully develop those ideas, doing things like repeating a phrase, playing it backwards, and adding harmony. Two months later, Angélica has translated the scores into standard notation, and the students refine their ideas through collaboration with an ensemble of professional musicians. The payoff is an exciting concert for peers and family members. About the series: A professional development resource for P-5 music educators; 8 30-minute video programs, plus overview; course guide; online interactives; and website. The Power of Music is designed to help pre-K through fifth-grade music educators integrate into their practice effective teaching strategies used in El Sistema-inspired programs. The video series features teaching artists across the country committed to providing music-making opportunities to children who otherwise might not have them. Incorporating their own ideas, experiences, and pedagogical expertise, these music educators have adapted and created innovative teaching strategies to nurture a special kind of musical citizenship in their students. Jill Hislop explains the programme and the need to create a positive environment to attract and engage pupils. A whole school approach to attendance and punctuality is now in place with a careful use of carrots and sticks. Electronic registration, 1st day calling to parents, and a late gate have all made a difference. An improved curriculum has helped engage less academic pupils and a system of reward cards is popular. Her mother had abandoned the family's house on leaving China for the U.S. in the early 1960's. Christine was sent to innumerable city housing authorities and agencies only to find that the house had never been registered with the city of Shanghai and the government had taken over the property when her mother left. Trying to take it back from the city now would ""shame the city and therefore the country"" and would be considered traitorous. Christine finally located her old girlfriend, Li Dao Wen, at the Music Conservatory after several baffling interviews with Li's estranged relatives and innumerable fortune tellers. Puebla is also known for its pottery and tile industry, and we visit Uriarte, the oldest certified continuously operating workshop in the city. Founded in 1824 by Dimas Uriarte, this workshop continues to create Talavera Poblana, a type of majolica pottery with milk-white glaze originally decorated with a cobalt blue pigment. Other colors are now used as well, but the pottery is still made in the traditional method and using the same techniques as those of the founder. From the Uriarte Workshop we stroll to the Artists' Neighborhood, a serene location for the studios of local artists and a wonderful place for tourists to visit. Next we travel a few miles outside of Puebla to Cholula, where we see a Spanish-style church built on top of an ancient Indian pyramid. Nearby is a museum to learn more about both structures. Dark matter. Unit 10","","29 minutes","['Physics for the 21st century']","Most of the mass in galaxies like our own Milky Way does not reside in the stars and gas that can be directly observed with telescopes. Rather, around 90 percent of the mass in a typical galaxy is ""dark matter,"" a substance that has so far evaded direct detection. How can scientists make this astonishing claim? Because, although we have yet to detect dark matter, we can infer its existence from the gravitational pull it exerts on the luminous material we can see. Another facet of the dark matter problem comes at larger scales, where the total amount of mass in the universe exceeds the inventory of atoms we think were made in the Big Bang. A third indication of something missing comes from the evolution of the large-scale structure in the Universe, where fluctuations in the dark matter density are needed to seed the formation of the tendrils and filaments of galaxies we see in observations. So what is dark matter, and how might we find out? Determining the nature and distribution of dark matter is one of the most pressing (and most interesting!) open questions in modern science—it resides at the interface of particle physics, astrophysics, and gravity. Many candidates for dark matter have been suggested, from the ghostly axion (particles with a tiny amount of mass) to Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) that weigh in at 100 times the proton's mass. In this unit, we shall review the observational and theoretical evidence for dark matter, and describe the attempts that are under way to find it.","stream","[]","[]","['Cosmology', 'Astronomy', 'Physics']","['Educational films', 'Instructional films', 'Nonfiction films']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1009754xxx/1009754747/1009754747-disc001-file001-frame00180-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?MARC;3965189" "asp3360511-marc","","Fast, cheap & out of control","","83 minutes","[]","The creator of such groundbreaking films as 'A Brief History of Time', 'The Thin Blue Line', 'Vernon, Florida', and 'Gates of Heaven', Errol Morris is one of the most original filmmakers working today. His latest, 'Fast, cheap & out of control', may be his most unusual work yet; Morris refers to it as 'the ultimate low-concept movie -- a film that utterly resists the possibility of a one-line summary.' The film interweaves the stories of four obsessive men, each driven to create eccentric worlds of their dreams, all involving animals: Dave Hoover, a lion tamer who idolizes the late Clyde Beatty, and who shares his odd theories on the mental processes of wild animals; George Mendonça, a topiary gardener who has devoted a lifetime to painstakingly shaping bears and giraffes out of hedges and trees; Ray Mendez, who is fascinated with hairless mole-rats, tiny buck-toothed mammals who behave like insects; and Rodney Brooks, an M.I.T. scientist who has designed complex, autonomous robots that can crawl like bugs without specific instructions from a human controller. As the film proceeds, thematic connections between the four protagonists begin to emerge: the lion tamer and the topiary gardener look back at ways of life which are fading from the scene; the mole-rat specialist and the robot scientist eye the future, envisioning creatures that may someday replace the human race. The film's style is as adventurous as its subject matter. Working with Oscar-winning cinematographer Robert Richardson ('Natural Born Killers', 'Casino'), Morris utilizes numerous film formats and resolutions--including black & white, color, 35mm, 16mm, Super-8 and video, as well as stock footage, old movies and cartoons -- to create a singularly impressionistic collage of images. Morris' trademark unblinking interviews were shot with his invention, the Interrotron, which allows his subjects to look directly into the camera lens and, at the same time, have eye contact (through an image projected on a teleprompter) with Morris. The film's unique vision is echoed by Caleb Sampson's haunting and powerful score. Hilarious, sad, absurd, eerie and beautiful, 'Fast, cheap & out of control' is a film like no other. Starting as a darkly funny contemplation of the Sisyphus-like nature of human striving, it ultimately becomes a profoundly moving meditation on the very nature of existence.","stream","[]","['United States']","['Eccentrics and eccentricities']","['Experimental films', 'Documentary films', 'Feature films']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/content/1008269xxx/1008269087/1008269087-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?MARC;3360511" "asp3911076-marc","","Office 2013 for dummies user basics course. Here in the Montaro Valley, 10,000 feet above sea level, blues, jazz and rock and roll is interpreted in the rhythms and melodies of folkloric traditions. Every folk orchestra in the Peruvian central mountains has at least eleven or twelve saxophones, accompanied by a violin, a harp and one or two clarinets. We see how the local musicians imitate the New York style of the big band era, wearing dark, beautifully tailored suits, Al Capone fedoras and neckties, often emblazoned with ""I Love New York."" In this poor rural area, weddings take on the magic and exuberance of the world of Garcia Marquez. The smallest wedding has at least two orchestras, with eighteen musicians each. The music never stops. The musicians accompany the bride, dancing through the streets of the village along with the guests. Although none were charged with a terrorist-related crime, nearly 14,000 Muslim men were put into deportation proceedings after 83,000 registered. The hardship imposed by this ruling, denounced by the American Civil Liberties Union, can be seen on the lives of the three teenagers profiled. However, given the latest developments and enhancements in Python's capabilities and its numerous supportive libraries, Python has dethroned R and is the first choice for data science enthusiasts, especially those working on descriptive and prescriptive analytics. In this course, you will be performing data analysis on some popular datasets from Kaggle such as the Red Wine and White Wine analysis datasets. You will see how the coding structure for Python analyses on Jupyter notebooks is drastically simplified using fewer lines of code, with far fewer dependencies. While working with powerful libraries (NumPy and pandas), you will slice and dice data for relevant insights. Moving on, you will also learn about great visualization features which are greatly enhanced, faster, and easier to use in Python 3. The dinosaur trail. USA","","9 minutes","['Exploring the world series']","No bones about it - learning about dinosaurs is fun! Join us as we visit three different sites and find out about animals that lived in the USA millions of years before man appeared here. At Mammoth Site in Hot Springs, South Dakota, we discover that wooly mammoths and other animals became entrapped and died in a pond 26,000 years ago in the Pleistocene Era. They lay buried until 1974 when earth-moving equipment exposed the fossils. Today this research center and active dig attracts visitors daily and has the largest mammoth exhibit in the world. Next we move to Nebraska to visit the Agate Fossil Beds National Monument. Originally a working cattle ranch until fossils were found there in the early 20th century, it was authorized as a national monument in 1965 but didn't become a part of the National Park Service until 1997. This site is in a grassy valley of the Niobrara River, and the fossils date from 20 million years ago in the Miocene Era. Visitors can hike the trail that winds along the University Hill and Carnegie Hill where the fossils were found and are now on display. Our search along the Dinosaur Trail ends at the Wyoming Dinosaur Center where there are skeletons of more than 20 dinosaurs on display. We witness a dig with a staff paleontologist and learn the process of preparing a fossil for display. We even get to see a skeleton of T Rex, the king of the dinosaurs!","stream","[]","['Great Plains']","['Paleontological excavations', 'Dinosaurs']","['Travelogues (Television programs)']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1005341xxx/1005341855/1005341855-disc001-file001-frame00180-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?EBAP;2183025" "asp2860648-cbsv","","60 minutes. Can we save one of the worlds largest freshwater lakes? This program reveals how a perfect storm of agriculture, hydro practices, sewage run-off, flooding, and marsh destruction have devastated Lake Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, the 10th largest lake in the world. Lake Winnipeg is a 25,000 square km inland sea. It is bigger than Lake Ontario and about the same size as Lake Erie and it is in deep trouble. This once pristine lake has the worst blue-green algae problem of any major lake on the planet. In a distorted cycle that is a direct result of human activity, an excess of chemical nutrients in the lake has caused massive algae blooms. The green sludge washing up on the lakes shores threatens not only the lakes beauty, but also the natural ecosystems underlying it. If we don't intervene to restore the natural nutrient balance, one of Canada's largest lakes could choke from the bottom up. This film examines why the lakes ecology has changed so dramatically in just three decades and what needs to be done to restore the natural nutrient balance of one of Canada's largest lakes.","stream","[]","['Winnipeg, Lake (Man.)', 'Canada']","['Lake ecology', 'Ecosystem management', 'Algae']","['Documentary films']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1009663xxx/1009663353/1009663353-disc001-file001-frame00180-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?MARC;3923424" "asp3291709-marc","","Good Boy","","5 minutes","[]","Wab Kinew's music video, Good Boy, tells the story of Matthew Dumas, a young man killed by Winnipeg Police in 2005.
