The weirdest weather in the universe","","53 minutes","['Horizon']","We love talking about the weather - is it too hot or too cold, too wet or too windy? It's a national obsession. Now scientists have started looking to the heavens and wondering what the weather might be like on other planets. Today, we are witnessing the birth of extra-terrestrial meteorology, as technology is allowing astronomers to study the weather on other planets like never before. They began with our solar system, sending spacecraft to explore its furthest reaches, and now the latest telescopes are enabling astronomers to study planets beyond our solar system. Our exploration of the universe is revealing alien worlds with weather stranger than anyone could ever have imagined - we've discovered gigantic storm systems that can encircle entire planets, supersonic winds, extreme temperatures and bizarre forms of rain. On some planets, the temperatures are so hot that the clouds and rain are believed to be made of liquid lava droplets, and on other planets it is thought to rain precious stones like diamonds and rubies. We thought we had extreme weather on Earth, but it turns out that it is nothing compared to what's out there. The search for the weirdest weather in the universe is only just beginning.","stream","[]","[]","['Planets', 'Planetary meteorology', 'Weather']","['Documentary television programs']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1009859xxx/1009859901/1009859901-disc001-file001-frame00755-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?MARC;4031860" "asp1000998669-ahiv","","The Wright brothers controversy","2002, p2000","ca 43 min","[""History's mysteries"", 'American history in video']","History's mysteries journeys back to the early days of the century to chronicle the attempts of the overlooked aviators and dreamers who were the Wrights' contemporaries. She finds that the pride her pupils take in their new role is a strong motivational factor in improving their vocabulary and grammar. The sessions also act as useful revision classes, recapping basic language in a different and engaging way. Growing courage toward circumcision. Making Maasai men. 2","","33 minutes","['Being Maasai Today']","One aspect of traditional Maasai culture that remains central to the passage from boyhood to manhood is circumcision. It is a physical and psychological ordeal that Maasai boys look forward to and also dread. This remarkable ethnographic documentary explores the complex meanings of masculinity and Maasai ethnicity, and the place of circumcision and its attendant rituals in their cultural construction. For the Maasai, circumcision is a key public celebration of manhood. The principal events that surround and take place in a Maasai circumcision are shown in detail, including an actual surgery. The surgery itself is remarkably different from that familiar to Western peoples; the cutting is as intricate as the Maasai notion of masculinity.Important commentary is provided by David Kampatae ole Oinyeyie, an unmarried junior elder, who discusses the experiences of Maasai boys that grow their courage until they are ready for the ultimate test of the knife. A Maasai man, he says, must be fearless and always ready to confront danger in whatever form it may present itself. Whether it be the teeth of a leopard or the knife of the circumciser, a Maasai man is ever-ready to face danger without complaint.Proud of his culture and its traditions, David also acknowledges that Maasai life is changing as Western life influences tastes, desires, and practices. The Maasai way of dress, although less desirable in some contexts than Western clothes, is more suited to the environment of the pastoralist way of life, but young Maasai in particular prefer shirts and slacks to shukas. This is the second in a developing series of films (see also Womanhood and Circumcision: Three Maasai Women Have Their Say) on culture change among the Maasai of Kenya at the end of the 20th century. The two films together illustrate the important differences between the contexts of male and female genital-cutting among the Maasai.Boys are altered outside in public, surrounded by dozens of their age mates who taunt and goad them to avoid the disgrace of expressing hesitation or pain. Girls are cut inside their mother's house, in privacy, surrounded by only four women who whisper encouragement. Women initiates stand and walk to the bed where they will rest and heal; men are carried. These differences are iconic of the distinctions that will differentiate Maasai women and men from this point forward in their lives. The films clearly demonstrate how the Maasai divide life into stages that mark the progression from child to elder. While females pass directly from initiate to woman, males must be tested again and again: attaining adult manhood is a complex process that challenges and changes both body and mind. This outstanding documentary will engage students and generate analysis and discussion in a variety of courses in cultural anthropology, African studies, and gender studies. It was produced by Barbara G. Hoffman, Associate Prof. of Anthropology and Director, Visual Anthropology Center, Cleveland State University. Founded in 1975 by Dr. José Antonio Abreu in Venezuela, El Sistema has been described as a movement of music education for social change. Ideas of community and citizenship are central to El Sistema-inspired teaching and learning, which has been taking hold in programs across the United States. In New York City, a seminario - a common event in Venezuela - brings together children of diverse ages and musical levels to rehearse and perform with members of the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela. In a low-income New Jersey community where opportunities for instrumental music education are scarce, the Union City Music Project has been built on the philosophical and pedagogical foundations of El Sistema. From day one, preschoolers develop pre-orchestra skills as part of an ensemble - a musical community. Parents are intimately involved in the process of building paper violins with their children. About the series: A professional development resource for P-5 music educators; 8 30-minute video programs, plus overview; course guide; online interactives; and website. The Power of Music is designed to help pre-K through fifth-grade music educators integrate into their practice effective teaching strategies used in El Sistema-inspired programs. The video series features teaching artists across the country committed to providing music-making opportunities to children who otherwise might not have them. Incorporating their own ideas, experiences, and pedagogical expertise, these music educators have adapted and created innovative teaching strategies to nurture a special kind of musical citizenship in their students. Ursula von Rydingsvard works primarily with cedar to create large-scale structures. Drawing from her childhood memories of growing up in WWII Polish refugee camps, she creates massive wooden sculptures, which often resemble bowls, tools and walls, and echo the raw, wooden barracks in which her family was forced to live. Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle's technologically sophisticated sculptures and video installations employ natural forms such as clouds and icebergs, as well as objects including an umbrella and bullfight ring, as metaphors for understanding difficult social issues, from immigration and gun violence to human cloning. For photographer Robert Adams, inspiration comes from the American West. Through his compelling black-and-white images, he documents scenes and landscapes - from a stripped forest to a sprawling suburban neighborhood - that are beautiful yet disturbing and strike a balance between sober documentation and somber indignation. Mark Dion lives amongst ""the world of stuff,"" collecting materials from flea markets and yard sales for his installations and public projects - many of which explore our ideas and assumptions about nature. Inspired and intrigued by scientists, natural history museums and laboratory procedures, Dion's works include an elaborate vivarium in Seattle for which he constructed a greenhouse to protect and keep alive a fallen tree and its surroundings - a tribute to and appreciation for the complexities of our natural system.","stream","['Adams, Robert', 'Dion, Mark', 'Manglano-Ovalle, Iñigo', 'Von Rydingsvard, Ursula']","['United States']","['Artists', 'Art, American']","['Documentary films']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1007011xxx/1007011206/1007011206-disc001-file001-frame00180-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?PBS2;2800668" "asp3165347-marc","","Sunday morning. In the west of Scotland in Argyll, husband-and-wife sheep farmers George and Sybil set off to gather in their sheep from over six square miles of rugged mountainside. It is an emotional day when Sybil has to then take some of them to market. In the east of Scotland, soon-to-be-wed couple Martin and Mel introduce their newly purchased rams to their flock of ewes - but has Mel chosen well? They also visit the humanist celebrant who will perform their wedding to try and agree on their wedding vows. In the far north, beyond Inverness, John heads to market to teach his 13-year-old son James how to buy a good flock of ewes. But the victory would turn to devistating defeat, at the unexpected onslaught of Chinese troops. Set in an abbey, the story follows the increasingly frantic efforts of a monk trying to catch a fish. The film has a sound track of classical music but no dialogue and only a few sound effects. Peta begins her lesson by getting her pupils to listen to the sound track on its own and to practice their skills of inference and deduction. They then develop their ideas about the monk's character by using the drama technique, 'Sculptor and Sculpted'. Peta feels that visually rehearsing their ideas in this way helps structure their writing. In the second half of the lesson Peta introduces film language, the pupils practise doing different camera shots and begin to critique parts of the film. By the end of the lesson the class predicts how the story might end, and reacts to what actually happens.","stream","[]","['Great Britain']","['English language', 'Literacy']","['Instructional television programs']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1004319xxx/1004319843/1004319843-disc001-file001-frame00180-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?EDIV;1780710" "asp99239586500971","","Localization in iOS app. Multilingual iOS app","","55 minutes","[]","Learn how to make iOS apps that target multiple languages with user interfaces that can handle varying directions of text and other linguistic conventions. The filmmaker and his crew traveled throughout the country interviewing people who had witnessed some of the grimmest events of the war. He goes to the village of Mozote where American-trained soldiers of the Salvadoran army massacred 800 citizens. Similar round ups of civilians took place in many areas and we meet survivors who recall the loss of their loved ones. In the mountains of Guazapa and FLMN guerrilla shows where he lived and how he fought for six years before being captured by government forces. A student describes what happened to him and his teachers at the University of Central America. Jesuit priests were leaders in the struggle for justice and often targeted for assassination by the government forces. In contrast to these testimonies, a member of the upper class complains that the church had become mixed up in politics. Although scars from the war remain vivid, people are rebuilding their lives. The programs can be used with a discussion guide to help teachers engage their students in the process of ethical reasoning and acquaint them with its traditions through historical essays and other writings. A Web site with background on the programs and issues is coordinated with the series. Produced by Fred Friendly Seminars. 2007. Program Description: John Fairfield, a former prosecutor and respected state trial judge, is thinking of pursuing a life-long dream: a seat on the state Supreme Court. In Fairfield's state, Centralia, all the judges are chosen in nonpartisan elections, with no limits on what can be spent - or said - in the process of campaigning. Fairfield wonders what will be required of him - especially regarding fundraising and political advertising in what will be a fiercely contested statewide campaign - and what the implications might be for the ethical integrity of the judiciary.","stream","[]","['United States']","['Legal ethics', 'Judicial ethics', 'Political ethics']","['Filmed panel discussions', 'Documentary television programs']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1009754xxx/1009754842/1009754842-disc001-file001-frame00055-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?MARC;3965379" "asp3277624-marc","","Football massive. This series reveals the country's rich and intriguing wildlife stories, from the bustling communities of penguins hiding away in giant daisy forests to the kakapo -- Earth's only species of flightless nocturnal parrots. New Zealand was also the last place to be discovered and settled by people who brought with them new animals, like merino sheep and new predators like the stoat. Finally, Wild New Zealand meets the pioneering conservation heroes who are fighting to save some of its most endangered species. Isolated since the time of the dinosaurs, New Zealand's wildlife has been left to its own devices, with surprising consequences. Its ancient forests are still stalked by predators from the Jurassic era. It's also one of the most geologically active countries on earth. The first city is Punta Arenas, located on the shores of the Straits of Magellan and the largest city in the region. Translated as ""sandy point,"" the city is also known as ""the city of red roofs"" because of its colorful skyline. It is the southernmost city in South America and reached its golden age between 1850 and 1914 due to its wool and fishing industries. Its imposing cathedral on the central square and its 19th century architecture reflect this boom time, and the memorial statue to Ferdinand Magellan recalls its history. We visit a sheep ranch and a rookery to see the penguins before heading north to Puerto Montt, a fishing center settled by German immigrants in the late 1800s. Situated on a narrow coastal plain with the Andes Mountains in the background, Puerto Montt is a tranquil city with an active fishing economy, and its German heritage is evident in its alpine houses with balconies. It is the gateway to Chile's Lake District, and the active volcano Orsano dominates the area. We visit Orsano National Park and Emerald Lake created by the volcano and then travel north to Valparaiso, the most cosmopolitan city of the three. Once a major stop for ships traveling between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans before the Panama Canal was built, Valparaiso remains an important seaport as well as cultural center for the region. In this provocative documentary, we meet several articulate young men and women of mixed racial heritage. Each has one black parent, and a white, Asian or Hispanic second parent. They share with us their struggle to establish, acquire and assert a racial identity. Their experiences lead one to question whether there is room in America for a multi- racial identity. The interviews presented reflect the research of anthropologist Francine Winddance Twine. Her searching questions on dating, family relationships, friendships and childhood experiences reveal a wide range of reactions to having a dual heritage. As these young people speak of their hopes and frustrations, they all reveal the tension of having their multicultural background overlooked and being classified as having one racial identity.
