We take a look at how to safely carry out effective experiments that teachers can replicate in the classroom. David Richardson from the Institute of Physics demonstrates to three teachers with different backgrounds how they can handle radioactive sources safely. He shows a variety of experiments using alpha, beta and gamma ionising radiation. Supporting animations help to explain what is happening on an atomic level. David also gives the teachers some suggestions of starter activities to grab the attention of the students and draw them into the subject. Additional safety points are covered by John Ellis from CLEAPSS, the school science support service.","stream","[]","['Great Britain']","['Science', 'Radioactivity']","['Instructional television programs']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1004322xxx/1004322720/1004322720-disc001-file001-frame00180-size-fit-1024x578.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?EDIV;1738749" "asp3236558-marc","","Video studies in growing a business. Each week three totally new, never-before-seen inventions are demonstrated, examined, prodded, pushed, pulled (and occasionally dropped) by host James O'Loghlin's cohort of expert judges. The inventors don't get off lightly either - being subjected to a barrage of questions on every aspect of the invention; its design and market, its originality and manufacture, its safety and need. Whilst analysis of inventions is rigorous, the show always recognises the amazing and inspiring stories of the inventors themselves, celebrating the inventiveness and resourcefulness of the human mind, and the determination and hard work of those who dream big dreams, and then slave away to make them real. Thrown into the mix are entertaining, informative and even funny segments on the history of inventing, inventions of the future, and about some of the extraordinary inventors who have helped shape our world. That is what everybody thinks but they don't dare to say it,"" said Oggi, the leading Italian weekly. Through no intention of her own, Marla revived the age-old question, ""what is art?"" And then, five months into Marla's new life as a celebrity and just short of her fifth birthday, a bombshell dropped. CBS' 60 Minutes aired an expose suggesting strongly that the paintings were painted by her father, himself an amateur painter. As quickly as the public built Marla up, they tore her down. The New York Post asked whether ""the juvenille Jackson Pollock may actually be a full-fledged Willem de Fraudling,"" the Olmsteads were barraged with hate mail, ostracized around town, sales of the paintings dried up, and Marla's art dealer considered moving out of Binghamton. Embattled, the Olmsteads turned to the filmmaker to clear their name. Torn between his own responsibility as a journalist and the family's desire to see their integrity restored, the director finds himself drawn deeper and deeper into a situation that can't possibly end well for him and them, and could easily end badly for both.","stream","['Olmstead, Marla']","[]","['Fraud', 'Painting', 'Child artists']","['Documentary films']","https://media.proquest.com/media/asp/asp-drm/1008269130/thumbnail.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?MARC;3360575" "asp3369367-marc","","Songs from the inside. We visit Kingsbrook School where P4C was taken on as part of the Northamptonshire Raising Standards project and the English department schemes of work have been rewritten to include opportunities for P4C. Finally in the 1960s, the civil rights campaign in the South brought real change. Mississippi now has thirteen elected black sheriffs. This film tells the story of one of them: Sheriff Frank Davis and how he gained acceptance by the community of Port Gibson as its major law enforcer. Frank was one of eleven children of Mary Triplett, whose mother and grandmother had been victims of Jim Crow. Mary could not vote or eat in a restaurant of work as a clerk in a store. His father was a mechanic and although they never missed a meal, the Tripletts were very poor, attended segregated schools and lived in shabby houses on unpaved streets. In 1965, the Port Gibson branch of the NAACP organized the first non-violent civil rights marches and boycotts there. When young Frank attended the first civil rights rally, he was immediately fired from his job in a white-owned supermarket. Frank was drafted and sent to Korea. On his return, he was hired as Deputy Sheriff by Port Gibson's white sheriff, with one piece of advice, ""Be fair."" He was then elected to the office, becoming one of the first three black sheriffs elected in Mississippi since Reconstruction. In this, the second of four programmes from Lampton School, West London, Reuben looks forward to his next enquiry. Working with Michael Riley, History consultant, Reuben develops a ""really good history question"" and a role-play-focus for the enquiry, and we see the class's progress as they work on understanding life in a medieval village. The children set the scene, talk about the character they most identify with and weigh up what they would have done in similar circumstances. The story is set at the beginning of the 20th century. Roberta, Peter and Phyllis witness a landslide in the railway cutting which blocks the track. Peter remembers that the 11.29 is only minutes away - there's going to be a terrible accident if they don't come up with a plan to stop the train. Their unique clicking languages and their astonishing method of healing through trance dancing have made them a source of worldwide fascination. But these peaceful people have long faced pressures from dominant tribes and European settlers. Recently, cattle ranches, diamond mines and other projects have confined the San to a small portion of the land they once freely roamed. Having been forcibly evicted from their last remaining homeland and relocated into settlements, they must depend on governmental and outside aid. In spite of these challenges, the Bushmen have now begun to stand up for their heritage, their land and their dignity. They have realized that they can benefit economically from their distinctive knowledge and cultural traditions by organizing cultural safaris and selling their indigenous arts and crafts. They are engaged in a legal battle to recover a small portion of their native homeland in the Kalahari. Meridian-imagery exercises/stretches also require the individual to exert conscious control to get the body into each position. Once the position is reached, however, the primary objective is to let go and experience and observe what is going on in the body. In stops along the way we view African wildlife in the Londolozi Private Game Reserve in Kruger National Park; visit the grave of mining magnet Cecil Rhodes (Rhodes Scholarships), who founded the diamond company De Beers, in the Matopos National Park; tour Kimberley's 'Big Hole,' the world's largest diamond mine; and we see incredible aeriel footage of one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, Victoria Falls. Episode 1","","47 minutes","['The men who made us fat']","Around the world, obesity levels are rising – more people are now overweight than undernourished. Journalist Jacques Peretti explores the profitable ways eating habits have been revolutionised over the last 40 years. Travelling to the USA, he learns about a sweetener championed in the 1970s to make use of the excess corn grown by farmers but now known to interfere with the hormone that controls appetite. He reveals the history of 'supersizing', a concept that boosted both food consumption and profits, and speaks with industry professionals about the introduction of value meals, king-size snacks and multi-buy promotions. Examining assumptions about what is and is not healthy, Peretti also explores developments in dietary advice and the power of marketing and advertising on the choices we make. Peretti travels to America to investigate the story of high-fructose corn syrup. The sweetener was championed in the US in the 1970s by Richard Nixon's agriculture secretary Earl Butz to make use of the excess corn grown by farmers. Cheaper and sweeter than sugar, it soon found its way into almost all processed foods and soft drinks. HFCS is not only sweeter than sugar, it also interferes with leptin, the hormone that controls appetite, so once you start eating or drinking it, you don't know when to stop. Endocrinologist Robert Lustig was one of the first to recognise the dangers of HFCS but his findings were discredited at the time. Meanwhile a US Congress report blamed fat, not sugar, for the disturbing rise in cardio-vascular disease and the food industry responded with ranges of 'low fat', 'heart healthy' products in which the fat was removed - but the substitute was yet more sugar. Meanwhile, in 1970s Britain, food manufacturers used advertising campaigns to promote the idea of snacking between meals. Outside the home, fast food chains offered clean, bright premises with tempting burgers cooked and served with a very un-British zeal and efficiency. Twenty years after the arrival of McDonalds, the number of fast food outlets in Britain had quadrupled.","stream","[]","[]","['Food industry and trade', 'Fructose in human nutrition', 'Obesity', 'Food habits']","['Educational television programs']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1009922xxx/1009922745/1009922745-disc001-file001-frame00370-size-fit-1024x578.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?MARC;4035766" "asp3291982-marc","","Classroom instruction that works. Within a safe space the client is able to explore her past in relation to the present and also to begin to understand the multi-faceted role addiction has had throughout her life. The client's story is one of terrible losses but also of an enduring hope that paves the way for recovery. In addition to the counselling session there is also a commentary on the counsellor's thoughts and feelings about her client together with an overview of substance misuse and definitions of the many forms addiction takes. Introduction","2012","8 min","['Counseling and therapy in video, volume 3']","What are the secrets to successful therapy used by the """"masters""""? Are they all different in their approaches, or much more alike? This video presents, often humorously, information on successful nonlinear thinking and an overview of the seven domains. It then shows modern-day, cutting edge masters at work, including Steven Hayes, Marsha Linehan, Jon Carlson, Judith Beck, Francine Shapiro, Sue Johnson, Scott Miller, Steve Andreas, and William Glasser. Their widely varied theoretical approaches will be beneficial, practical, and entertaining to all current and aspiring counselors. This film teaches the secrets to non-linear thinking (a hallmark of master practitioners), then shares the seven essential domains universal to all effective therapy: Connecting and engaging with the client; Assessing for symptoms, strengths, resources, and themes; Building and maintaining the therapeutic relationship; Understanding client cognitive schemas; Understanding client emotional systems; Resolving client ambivalence; Using paradoxical interventions. Regardless of a person's theoretical orientation, these domains, and the non-linear thinking that accompanies them, are essential tools for any clinician interested in mastery.","stream","[]","[]","['Psychotherapy', 'Counseling', 'Nonlinear theories']","['Instructional films']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1005328xxx/1005328636/1005328636-disc001-file001-frame00180-size-fit-1024x578.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?CTIV;2304683" "asp1003005907-ahiv","","Pentomic 101st","1956","27 min","['Big picture', 'American history in video']","","stream","['United States', 'Airborne Division, 101st', 'Army']","[]","[]","[]","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1003005xxx/1003005907/1003005907-disc001-file001-frame00180-size-fit-1024x578.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?AHIV;772441" "asp2358160-ibus","","CultureQuest business. Even if the resistance to seeking professional help is overcome, they are the group with the highest rate of terminating counseling after a single visit. Our guest lecturer, Vivian Chee, suggests that failure on the part of counselors to understand the Asian-American culture and to tailor counseling approaches to fit the client's cultural perspectives and values play a significant role in the underutilization of services. After reviewing value differences between Asian-American and European-American cultures, Ms. Chee addresses the differences between traditional therapy and the therapeutic approaches that are most effective with Asian-American clients. A role play at the end of the class provides a dramatic demonstration of the differences between these two approaches.","stream","[]","[]","['Cross-cultural counseling', 'Counseling', 'Intercultural communication', 'Asian Americans', 'Substance abuse']","['Lectures']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1007137xxx/1007137088/1007137088-disc001-file001-frame00180-size-fit-1024x578.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?MARC;3559998" "asp2136532-clmv","Clemens non Papa, Jacobus, approximately 1510-approximately 1555","Fremuit spiritu Jesus","2010","9 min","[]","This is a performance of Grant yvroigne et mal vivant, performed by Huelgas Ensemble and conducted by Paul Van Nevel.","stream","[]","[]","['Motets']","[]","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1005008xxx/1005008562/1005008562-disc001-file001-frame02070-size-fit-1024x578.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?CLMV;2136532" "asp4180974-marc","","Protesting coal mining from a treehouse","","3 minutes","[]","For years, activists have been protesting the expansion of coal mining in the Hambach Forest in Germany by living in treehouses. The architecture reflects the Spanish style, and homes were built like fortresses. Only one gate remains to enter the city, but San Juan now combines its history with a modern vibrancy that entices visitors to shop and enjoy the vistas. Small country inns called paradores are popular tourist accommodations, and many were once private homes. These paradores dot the countryside, and some are quite near fishing villages where visitors can rent boats to explore the area and watch oyster fishermen working the shoreline.
