Andrea’s talented singers and orchestra have broken new ground by bringing popular opera to this traditionally symphonic concert hall. From the poignant love story, La Boheme, we’ll experience Rudolpho’s romantic aria, Che Gelita Manina and his love’s response, Si Mi Chiamano Mimi. La Boheme is packed with beautiful melodies and Andrea’s passionate interpretation of Soave Fanciulla is followed by the rousing finale from Act 2, featuring Musetta’s famous Waltz. Lucca’s three leading tenors perform the traditional festival melodies, Adeste Fideles, Tu Scendi dalle Stelle, and O Sole Mio. To round off this hour of novelties, we welcome the Senior Pipe Major of the Scots Guards, British Army, Major Ross McCrindle to the stage. Andrea mixes Scottish and Italian tradition for a rousing bagpipe finale, Time to Say Goodbye.","stream","[]","[]","[]","[]","https://cfvod.kaltura.com/p/1067292/sp/106729200/thumbnail/entry_id/0_pphhbdde/version/100042/width/320","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=https://fod.infobase.com/PortalPlaylists.aspx?wID=102638&xtid=188324" "fod1000188323","","Great Italian Opera in Vienna","","49 min 56 sec","['Opera - Classical Collections']","Italian Opera from the Musikverein and this Hall boasts the perfect acoustic for opera performance. We’ll hear Verdi’s Overture from La Forza Del Destino and Di quelle Pira from Il Trovatore, followed by Libiamo from the ever popular, La Traviata. Contrasting the high operatic style of Verdi with the more popular melody of Puccini, three arias from Tosca are enchanting – Recondita Armonia, Te Deum, and Lucevan Le Stelle. And no Italian Opera collection would be complete without the music of Mascagni. From the famous CavalleriaRusticana the Lucca Philharmonic and singers will perform the Prelude,Siciliana, and the Intermezzo.","stream","[]","[]","[]","[]","https://cfvod.kaltura.com/p/1067292/sp/106729200/thumbnail/entry_id/0_wh781jln/version/100042/width/320","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=https://fod.infobase.com/PortalPlaylists.aspx?wID=102638&xtid=188323" "fod1000188321","","The Liberation","","1 hr 37 min 15 sec","[]","In the Culinary Training Program of D.C. The biggest reason for this is the rapid increase in the temperature of seawater triggered by global warming. This rise in temperature causes the flow of water vapor and winds to change, thereby allowing super typhoons to expand and increase in number. The accumulated data and the experiences at present are limited. The margin of error in forecasts for heavy rain and typhoons could end up making the resulting damage much worse. This episode introduces new scientific methods and technologies at the frontline of weather forecasting that could save lives.","stream","[]","[]","['Atmosphere', 'Earth sciences', 'Meteorology', 'Weather']","[]","https://cfvod.kaltura.com/p/1067292/sp/106729200/thumbnail/entry_id/0_etk01zhh/version/100051/width/320","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=https://fod.infobase.com/PortalPlaylists.aspx?wID=102638&xtid=188320" "fod1000188319","","Skyscrapers in Aseismic Danger","","49 min 28 sec","['Mega Crisis']","Skyscrapers are symbols of big cities. But the mega earthquake that hit Kumamoto, Japan, in 2016 proved that even earthquake-resilient high-rise buildings can shake greatly and suffer severe damage. The culprit is the long period seismic pulse, which is lurking in active faults throughout the world. Simulations of this motion showed that tall buildings shook three times more, causing them to tilt. This episode depicts the destructive power of the long period seismic pulse, and the latest counter measures to combat this threat.","stream","[]","[]","['Earth (Planet)', 'Geology', 'Earth sciences', 'Geodynamics', 'Earth currents']","[]","https://cfvod.kaltura.com/p/1067292/sp/106729200/thumbnail/entry_id/0_y2j5ii4q/version/100051/width/320","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=https://fod.infobase.com/PortalPlaylists.aspx?wID=102638&xtid=188319" "fod1000188317","","Science to the Rescue - the Science of Adolescence","","49 min 28 sec","[]","Adolescence is a time when cute children suddenly become rebellious teenagers. The latest scientific research suggests this is deeply related to a “special mechanism” uniquely acquired during evolution; the troubling adolescent behavior is actually a part of human brain development. In this era of rapidly shifting social environments, the special workings of the adolescent brain are putting our children under enormous pressure, sometimes causing depression, bullying, and even suicide. Through scientific experiments and evolutionary anthropology, this program uncovers the secrets of the sensitive adolescent mind.","stream","[]","[]","['Psychology', 'Developmental psychology', 'Child development']","[]","https://cfvod.kaltura.com/p/1067292/sp/106729200/thumbnail/entry_id/0_4213sogu/version/100052/width/320","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=https://fod.infobase.com/PortalPlaylists.aspx?wID=102638&xtid=188317" "fod1000188316","","AI, Into the Real World","","49 min 27 sec","[]","Be it chess or Go, artificial intelligence has swept aside human grandmasters. But it has been recently found that this hypothesis by Nicolaus Copernicus was greatly influenced by Islamic astronomy. In fact, many names of the stars are Arabic. Further developing the science from Ancient Greece, Islamic scientists accurately measured the positions of the sun and stars to determine the direction of the holy city of Mecca. With their high expertise, they succeeded to observe the Andromeda galaxy for the first time in the world, and eventually established their own astronomy, which rose to prominence in the 9th to 15th centuries. A brand new vaccine against seasonal flu has to be created once a year for both the northern and southern hemispheres. The constant and rapid evolution of the virus means an effective vaccine this year, can be useless by the next. Scientists in Belgium are determined to beat the virus by producing a vaccine that works long-term, against many types of flu, including pandemic strains. Professor Saelens and his colleagues have pinpointed a small part of the flu virus that doesn’t adapt and doesn’t mutate. It’s a tiny protein that lies just below the surface, a constant, fixed target for a vaccine. The team has been able to generate molecules of DNA relating to the protein they are targeting and implant them into these simple bacteria. The bacteria are easy to store safely and can be grown as needed to make the vaccine. Since the vaccine production process would not have to change each year, in the long run, it would be more straightforward – and cheaper. Some scientists don’t agree that targeting such a small protein is the way forward. But so far, the results have been positive. But to prove the vaccine’s effectiveness, tests need to be done on a much larger scale and over several flu seasons. This will be expensive. Despite this, Professor Saelens is convinced this method holds the key to the elusive enduring flu vaccine.","stream","[]","[]","['Medicine, Preventive', 'Health', 'Diagnosis']","[]","https://cfvod.kaltura.com/p/1067292/sp/106729200/thumbnail/entry_id/0_2nb9ql51/version/100012/width/320","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=https://fod.infobase.com/PortalPlaylists.aspx?wID=102638&xtid=188170" "fod1000188169","","Defying Traditions to Save Lives","","3 min 56 sec","['Health Innovations, Series 1']","In Bangladesh, people are defying traditions to save lives during child birth. Once in position, electricity and radio waves are pulsed through the end of the catheter, inactivating the nerves, but without damaging the patient’s kidneys. This technique has been used successfully in other countries on patients suffering from high blood pressure. But this trial is the first time it’s been used to treat heart failure, anywhere in the world. With heart failure cases increasing worldwide, doctors say this novel approach offers hope for patients.","stream","[]","[]","['Medical care', 'Health']","[]","https://cfvod.kaltura.com/p/1067292/sp/106729200/thumbnail/entry_id/0_wwtpv6pn/version/100022/width/320","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=https://fod.infobase.com/PortalPlaylists.aspx?wID=102638&xtid=188163" "fod1000188162","","Bangladesh Health Workers","","7 min 12 sec","['Health Innovations, Series 1']","Bangladesh health workers are helping to save the lives of dozens of babies and mothers every day. In Malawi, the weekly HIV clinic is teeming with patients of all ages, from babies to grand-parents. A health care worker is questioning one of them about their social and economic background. He writes down an increasingly grim litany. Education – none, job – none, children – many, rooms in mud hut – too few. It is clear that these are people in need. In Malawi, one in eight adults are infected with HIV. But drugs alone may not be the answer to this deadly scourge. In Neno, a remote area in southern Malawi, poverty and HIV are both rampant. There are clutches of straw roofed huts, neglected villages and abandoned crops. People here are obviously very poor. It is the recipe for a major health crisis, one that is far beyond the resources of the government to cope with. As this documentary reveals, the true nature of the Duke’s character was far different. The film focuses on the intriguing complexities of Wellington, his character, personality, and relationships, told through his own words and the words of those who knew him. At a time when around half the population died before they reached 18 and a rigid system of social hierarchy held sway, life choices were determined early and adult responsibilities sometimes began not at 16 but as early as seven. This film looks at the lives of medieval children embarking on their journey into adulthood and reveals that although they had to grow up quickly in a harsh world, the experience could also be richly rewarding. At the time Louis knew there was more to Savile than met the eye. But while he succeeded in showing a different side of Savile, the darkest side of this hugely complex man eluded him. Following his 2011 death, 'Saint Jimmy' was revealed to be a predatory sex offender with a vast number of victims, who had used his celebrity status to commit these crimes. In light of the devastating revelations about the disgraced star, Louis sets out to understand the truth by talking to people who worked closely with Savile, to some of his victims, and also by re-examining moments from the original film and footage that's never aired before on television.","stream","[]","[]","['Gender identity disorders', 'Psychology', 'Offenses against property', 'Criminology', 'Offenses against the person', 'Sexual disorders', 'Psychology, Pathological']","[]","https://cfvod.kaltura.com/p/1067292/sp/106729200/thumbnail/entry_id/0_f1z3r1t7/version/100042/width/320","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=https://fod.infobase.com/PortalPlaylists.aspx?wID=102638&xtid=187680" "fod1000187679","","Louis Theroux, Law And Disorder In Lagos","","58 min 43 sec","[]","Louis Theroux spends time on both sides of the law in Lagos - the former capital of Nigeria and one of the fastest growing cities in the world. Meanwhile, KAI, the government's Kick Against Indiscipline paramilitary task force, bulldoze whole precincts and arrest hundreds if they detect any violation of the state laws.
