Geological research has revealed that underwater volcanoes, or hydro thermal vents, are rich in metals like copper, zinc, silver and gold at concentrations that make them commercially attractive to miners. But, they are also colonized by exotic life-forms and scientists believe the vents may have been the location where life originated. Still with us today, they've survived climate change, disease and natural disaster. Using DNA sequences and fossil records, an extensive new study has built a beetle 'family tree'. Like most cities, Ghana's capital, Accra has a problem dealing with the tonnes of plastic packaging that goes to waste every day. Only a tiny amount gets recycled, and much of it ends up littering the streets. But one local business has come up with a novel way to recycle the plastic, turning it into practical and decorative bags. The Hong Kong Jockey Club has hosted many glamorous events, not least the 2008 Olympic Games equestrian events. 200 horses and 14 days of events equals a lot of excitement - and a lot of manure ... more than 400 tons. In the past waste had been sent to landfill, but Beijing's 'green Olympics' required a better solution.","stream","[]","[]","['Climatic changes', 'Conservation of natural resources', 'Recycling (Waste, etc.)', 'Ecology']","['Documentary films']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1005109xxx/1005109656/1005109656-disc001-file001-frame00180-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?ENVV;2123281" "asp2123279-ausv","","English have a go. A collaboration between Jordan and Israel, it's being built as an alternative diving site to take the pressure off existing reefs, at least half of which have already been destroyed. Eco-friendly Estate On Old Gravel Pit- It's hard to imagine, but this idyllic English housing estate was once an old gravel pit. The 240 hectare rural setting is in the picturesque Cotswold Hills. It's a getaway for city people who escape the big smoke of London and Birmingham for the scenic lakes and elegant, architect-designed homes. China Electric Bikes- Bikes, motorcycles and scooters have long been a popular way of getting around Chinese cities. China's 1.3 billion residents, already grappling with pollution, are now faced with severe fuel shortages and soaring prices. Old News Is Of Growing Importance- Every year around the world billions of tonnes of peat is dug out of the ground to supply nurseries and home gardeners. But peat-lands are the carbon vaults of our earth. When the peat is dug up, harmful greenhouse gases are released into the atmosphere. Now, British plant researchers have created a new peat substitute for growing plants. And it uses a waste by-product of newspaper recycling. Water Harvester- In an arid province of Zimbabwe, lives the man they call the water harvester. Zephaniah Phiri Maseko has spent much of his life conserving water and coaxing wondrous growth from meagre rainfall. In 1964, politically oppressed, he lost his job. With eight mouths to feed, his only option was the family holding of three parched hectares. With a natural Instinct he developed the means to capture and preserve the precious rains. Bee Colony Collapse- Some experts say that the bee is 'the canary in the coal-mine'. If it really is an early warning sign of a sick planet, then we should take notice, because our bees are disappearing fast. In just the past few years, quite literally billions of bees have died off around the world. In some countries it is feared they will become extinct. Beekeepers in Germany were among the first to report the problem. Throughout the country, bee populations have fallen by 25 per cent and up to 80 per cent in some areas.","stream","[]","[]","['Conservation of natural resources', 'Ecology']","['Documentary films']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1005109xxx/1005109650/1005109650-disc001-file001-frame00180-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?ENVV;2123247" "asp2123245-pexp","","Quiet Rage. The Stanford Prison Experiment","2004","53 min","[]","About the Stanford Prison ExperimentIn the summer of 1971, Philip Zimbardo, Craig Haney, and Curtis Banks carried out a psychological experiment to test a simple question: What happens when you put good people in an evil place -- does humanity win over evil, or does evil triumph? To explore this question, college student volunteers were pretested and randomly assigned to play the role of prisoner or guard in a simulated prison at Stanford University. Although the students were mentally healthy and knew they were taking part in an experiment, some guards soon became sadistic and the prisoners showed signs of acute stress and depression. After only six days, the planned two-week study spun out of control and had to be ended to prevent further abuse of the prisoners. This dramatic demonstration of power of social situations is relevant to many institutional settings, such as the Abu Ghraib Prison in Iraq. Quiet Rage is a 50-minute documentary film from the study, as well as a bonus 70 images slide show of archival photographs from the study. The film has been shown in thousands of classrooms around the world and is sure to stimulate critical thinking and discussion. Narrated by Philip Zimbardo, the documentary uses original footage, flashbacks, post-experiment interviews with prisoners and guards, and comparisons with real-life prisons. Philip Zimbardo is Professor Emeritus of Psychology at Stanford University and an internationally recognized scholar, educator, and media personality, winning numerous awards in each of these areas. Scientists at the zoo began the programme in 2005 to collect genetic material from south American felines at the zoo, and store them in a frozen gene bank. Horseback Fishermen- For more than 500 years, tradition Has held on in this small coastal village in Flanders, Belgium. Oostduinkerke is the last place in the world where horseback shrimpers continue their ancient practice. Hundreds of horseback fishermen used to work in France, the Netherlands and Britain, entering the North Sea at low tide to scoop the fish into their nets. Today fewer than a dozen men still fish this way. For them it's not a profitable business, but it's more than a hobby--it's in their blood. Cycle Recycling- Taking recycling to a whole new level is the city of Inverness in Scotland. They're repairing unclaimed bikes that were either lost or stolen, and making them available for free public use around the city. Monitoring A Changing Earth- Our world is changing. Rising seas, melting icecaps, violent storms, floods, desertification--all are part of the pattern of global warming. How to better monitor and record the changes across the globe has become an important issue. Addressing this, the group on earth observations, or GEO, held a summit in South Africa. Ukraine Bottle House- There's a house in north-east Kiev that might not win any prizes for architectural design, but it certainly qualifies for most unusual construction material. It's been built entirely from empty alcohol bottles, all retrieved from the banks of the nearby Dnieper River. The owner of the house is the chief of the local river rescue service. After spending his summers picking up discarded bottles he decided to put them to use. Mexico Butterflies- it's a long and arduous journey, thousands of kilometers. But every year millions set out for Michoacan in the Mexican mountains. It is here that the Monarch Butterflies finally complete their famed migration, and hordes of people gather to see them. Silicon Wafers- Not very long ago the contents of these drums would have been crushed and sent to landfill. They are silicon wafers, used to make chips for electronic products--from mobile phones to computers. Each year around 3 million are discarded, many of them destroyed because of the intellectual property etched on their surface.","stream","[]","[]","['Conservation of natural resources', 'Ecology', 'Climatic changes', 'Wildlife conservation', 'Recycling (Waste, etc.)']","['Documentary films']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1005109xxx/1005109648/1005109648-disc001-file001-frame00180-size-fit-1024x578.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?ENVV;2123188" "asp2123176-pexp","","Human Aggression","1976","24 min","[]","By depicting spontaneous, and startling, occurrences of aggression in the activities of a youth gang and relating them to scientific principles and laboratory findings, this film succeeds in communicating the major specific scientific principles and findings on human aggression.","stream","[]","[]","['Aggressiveness', 'Violence']","['Documentary films']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1004538xxx/1004538582/1004538582-disc001-file001-frame00930-size-fit-1024x578.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?PEXP;2123176" "asp2123112-envv","","Green matters. It's the principality of Liechtenstein, the last German-speaking Monarchy in the world. Snuggled between Switzerland and Austria, it's Europe's fourth smallest country, covering an area of only 160 square kilometres. But despite its size, the country is a world leader on environmental issues. By the middle of last century it had passed laws covering water and land conservation and in the early 70s covering air pollution. Recycling Mining Sludge- Skinningrove is a small village on the north-east coast of England. Once there were 86 mines in the region, when Teesside was one of the iron and steel centres of the world. The last of the old mines closed 40 years ago, but still the rivers are stained a reddish colour by ochre, that leeches out of the old mines. It coats vegetation, clogs fish gills and when it feeds into town water supplies, blocks pumps and sewers. China Melting Ice- Perched on the edge of Siberia, Harbin is known as one of China's coldest cities. But things have changed here, as in the rest of China. With a booming economy has come pollution, an overabundance of cars, and rising temperatures. For 24 years Harbin's Ice Lantern Festival and Snow Sculpture Show have brought in tourists from all around the world. In the city's Zhaolin Park, competitors gather for the ice sculpting contest where they're given three days to carve, chip and sculpt. Antarctica Map- At a recent press conference, a joint American and British team of researchers unveiled a new map of Antarctica. The landsat image mosaic of Antarctica, or Lima, is expected to revolutionise research and the public's understanding of the continent. Broadcaster Comes To Aid Of Frogs- This is probably the most poisonous animal in the world--the Golden Poison Frog. But like many species it's under threat of extinction. Fortunately, frogs of all kinds have good friends on their side. Water Technology- It's the sound of life, and it's our most precious asset--water. But in many countries it has also been our most squandered and neglected resource. Now, finding water, making it clean, and protecting it are shaping up as big issues and big money. At a recent exhibition, marketing Israeli products to foreign investors, businesses showed some of the innovative products they've developed to combat water problems. Kenya Glass Kenya's Nairobi National Park, where wild animals roam freely, is also home to Richard Koitumet Ogeli. Believed extinct for 70 million years, its discovery in 1938 caused a scientific sensation. Island of Comoros fisherman Msa says villagers had caught six others before his, but did not know its significance. Some were killed and eaten. France Snow- One of France's most popular ski resorts is Meribel, in the heart of the famed three valleys. The region is the world's largest ski area with more than 600 kilometres of snow runs. In the past, good snow was a given, but since 1995 the world has experienced its eleven hottest years recorded. Resort owners know that heavy falls, such as in early 2008, are nowadays a rarity and they regularly turn to artificial methods to guarantee good skiing and good business. But increasingly it is at risk from human activity. Environmental organization, WWF, has called on the Australian government to declare the entire Coral Sea region a marine protected area. House Of The Future- Imagine taking a peek into the future. What will your eco-account balance be? In the red? Or in the green? At Belgium's Living Tomorrow exhibition, the house of the future gave visitors a sneak preview. Russian Permafrost- In a remote corner of Siberia, the heat of climate change is having a visible impact. For the first time in tens of thousands of years, Siberia's frozen land, the permafrost, is thawing. At this area, known as Wind Swept Cliff, huge ice wedges have been exposed by the thaw. The wedges are normally covered by vegetation, but as the ice melts, the solid land around it turns into mud and subsides, causing trees to fall over, and exposing the ice wedges. There are fears the thawing of the permafrost, could have dire consequences. Ordinary people are unwittingly encouraging the illegal wildlife trade, unaware the trinkets and souvenirs they buy are made from endangered species. Mexico Ethanol- The quest for cleaner fuels has caused a boom in biofuel production worldwide. In the United States corn-based ethanol production has risen steadily, and consequently the country has reduced its exports of corn as a food product. In neighbouring Mexico, where corn is a food staple, the shortage has bitten hard, and the government has moved quickly to lift local production. Mexican farmers, who have struggled to make a living, are happy to increase their crop yields. Rwanda Gorilla Naming- At a wildlife park in Rwanda, thousands of residents turned up for an event involving international celebrities and the nation's leaders. In a traditional ceremony, 23 endangered baby mountain gorillas were given names, celebrating their addition to a population that now stands at a mere 700. Hong Kong Eco-Coffins- Around seven million people squeeze onto the island that is one of the most densely populated areas in the world--Hong Kong. So with space at a premium and pollution a growing problem, a recent exhibition showcased some greener solutions for making one's final departure. UK Public Transport- Transport produces around 25% of the UK's emissions and is the largest source of air pollution in London. The average London rush-hour speed is just eleven kilometres per hour. Fear of a city slowed to gridlock led to a 'congestion charge' on cars entering the central zones. The toll has played a part in persuading drivers onto public transport. Bus and rail journeys have grown by nearly two percent since 2005. Animal Nurse- Inside Jakarta's Ragunan Zoo is the home of head zoo-keeper, Achadiat Suparman Effendi, or as everyone calls him, Maman. For almost 25 years he's cared for the animals and, like many hard workers, his job spills into his home life. Low Carb City- When this quiet city in southern Sweden decided to get rid of fossil fuels back in 1996, most outsiders thought it was just a quirky local initiative. But the world is finally waking up to climate change and now Vaxjo attracts a stream of international politicians, scientists and business leaders, keen to learn about its environmental programme.","stream","[]","[]","['Endangered species', 'Conservation of natural resources', 'Ecology', 'Renewable energy sources', 'Biodiesel fuels']","['Documentary films']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1005109xxx/1005109634/1005109634-disc001-file001-frame00180-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?ENVV;2122422" "asp2121353-vast","","Secret life of the whitetails","2012","54 min","[]","White-tailed deer are one of the most adaptable large grazing mammals on earth. In this college kitchen dating back to 1427, they're cooking up new ways to help the environment. Used cooking oil is collected from college kitchens and turned into biofuel. It's part of a trial of alternative fuels for the University's vehicles. Red Algae- Vizhinjam is an idyllic fishing village on the western coast of India. For centuries the families in this village have derived their livelihood from fishing. But climate change and overfishing have affected stocks and families now struggle to make ends meet. There is hope however, and it comes in the form of a red algae or kelp, a type of seaweed. Thai Fish Leather- A few years ago, Thai fish skins were either tossed away or sold as cheap fried food. Now, they're used around the world as a stylish fashion material. The skin is from the tropical Tilapia fish, commonly farmed and sold in Thailand. At this seafood factory south of Bangkok, 30,000 pieces of Tilapia fish are cleaned, sliced and skinned every day. New Jersey Wind Turbine- For more than 50 years Michael Mercurio has enjoyed life in his seaside town in New Jersey. So it came as a big surprise when neighbours sued him for erecting a backyard wind turbine. He says it's an attempt to fight global warming and the flooding effect on his small beach community. Dolphin Protest- The renewed Japanese whale hunt arouses worldwide controversy and protest. But in historic whaling town, Taiji (ty-gee), there is another, less known hunt. Each year, from October to March, thousands of dolphins are herded into shallow waters, trapped and butchered. UK Bird Island- A twelve million pound project backed by Britain's Royal Society for the preservation of birds will create a wetland paradise for birds on the Essex coast. 763 hectares on Wallasea Island--an area two and a half times the size of the city of London--will be returned to its original salt marsh state. Reindeer Festival- Each year Russia's Koryak people Gather to celebrate the natural bounty of the Reindeer herds they tend. These beautiful and gentle arctic animals are the centre of life for the Koryaks. Kenya Hydro- The Embu district in central Kenya is rather unusual--it has an abundance of water. It has a high annual rainfall and receives runoff from the snows of Mount Kenya. Many communities have no access to the electrical grid, but near the town of Chuka, water presented a solution. With the aid of a UN-managed global environment facility fund, the community has set up a hydro turbine, powering 56 homes. Railway To Road- A British company has developed a way to convert old railway lines into instant roads, using recycled rubber. These interlocking panels are already used at railway crossings and can be laid lengthways at the rate of a kilometre a day to create long-wearing new roads. Green Boats- The gateway of India, Mumbai, is enjoying a sea change. Ferries at the busy waterfront are becoming much more environmentally friendly, improving water and air quality. It began as a showcase project, supported by the energy research institute and funded by oil company, Bharat Petroleum. Initially only about 10 of the ferries were involved, but many more soon 'came aboard'. Elephants And Ivory- For centuries human beings have hunted elephants, their tusks highly valued for ivory. Once poachers began using automatic rifles, Elephant numbers fell dangerously low, resulting in a worldwide ban on ivory trade in 1989. Green Weddings- A white wedding turns green. This couple in Devon, Southwest England, chose to make their special day kind on the environment. For transport ... a comfortable two horsepower solution. As he digs around under the dry ground for his next meal, a hawk takes notice and swiftly dives. A nearby clanmate sees the danger and gives a sharp shriek of alarm. At once, a multitude bolts away to the nearby burrow, while the hawk, with no prey to hunt, soars back skyward. Renowned Cambridge scientist, Tim Clutton-Brock, has followed this meerkat clan intimately for the past five years. He shows us how these critters fight the heavy odds against them by helping each other. They join forces to hunt, build homes, feed the young and protect themselves. Clutton-Brock also shows the dark side of meerkat life. Only one couple is allowed to breed and when this pair is up for replacement, fierce competition can flair up within the clan, resulting in the murder of a litter as new leaders emerge.","stream","[]","[]","['Meerkat']","['Documentary films']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1004932xxx/1004932487/1004932487-disc001-file001-frame00180-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?VAST;2112866" "asp2112864-blsv","","A woman for all seasons","1985","28 min","[""Tony Brown's Journal"", 'Black studies in video']","This 1985 episode of Tony Brown's Journal is an interview with Sheryl Lee Ralph.","stream","[]","[]","['African American entertainers']","['Filmed interviews']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1004971xxx/1004971534/1004971534-disc001-file001-frame00185-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?BLSV;2112864" "asp2112862-vast","","Out there. For some people they become a veritable obsession. What makes these eclipse chasers run? The film follows four of them as they travel incredible distances to witness the last total eclipse of the millennium as it sweeps eastward across Europe to India. At various points along the way enthusiasts Alain Cirou in France, Paul Houde in Austria, Olivier Staiger in Germany and Debasis Sarkar in India offer their impressions of the historic event. From the legends of ancient religions and civilizations to the present day, there is one constant: the search for spirituality in its most basic form. The film is a kind of poetic meditation, an impressionistic illumination of what links humanity together in the face of the absolute, when the soul is stamped by more than just the shadow of the moon.
