A New Democracy for Europe?","","47 min 3 sec","[]","If the European leaders won’t start to listen to their citizens soon, the European Union will be a thing of the past. For this reason, former Greek minister of Finance, Yanis Varoufakis, has started a grass roots movement which is rapidly gaining support all over Europe. What is the most frightening thing for the political order in Europe? Not terrorism, migration or the international competitive position, its democracy. If the European leaders won’t listen to the citizens of the 28 countries that make up the Union, it will disintegrate before long, says Greek economist and former minister of Finance Yanis Varoufakis. That is why he has started a political movement, which is rapidly joined by all sorts of civil initiative organizations, from Berlin to Zagreb. What would a new, truly democratic Europe look like? As a minister, Varoufakis noticed that a politician doesn’t have any power. Real power lies with the people who control the economy. When he presented his new movement DiEM25, he took up the fight with the financial sector and the large companies which, according to him, are cannibalizing politics. The City of London is a state within the British state, so it’s a model for the power of corporate Europe and the end of democracy. It’s a situation which is growing out of control, says German sociologist Wolfgang Streeck. In great detail he explains how we, using increasingly innovative financial maneuvers, have bought off a political crisis in Europe and postponed the ‘day of reckoning’. In the Spanish town of Pontevedra, former resident and prime minister of Spain, Mariano Rajoy, has been declared persona non grata. Rajoy granted a sixty-year concession for a large piece of coastal property to an extremely polluting paper mill. This was a typical example of how the old corrupted politics worked. The local population are not going to take it anymore. Does Varoufakis’ pan-European movement stand a chance? Can it really create change? VPRO Backlight: People, power and Varoufakis with, among others, Wolfgang Streeck (German sociologist), Yanis Varoufakis (Greek economist and former minister of Finance), Migual Anxo Lores (mayor of Pontevredra, Spain) and Mark Boleat (City of London lobbyist).","stream","[]","[]","['Social institutions', 'World politics', 'Politics and government']","[]","https://cdnsecakmi.kaltura.com/p/1067292/sp/106729200/thumbnail/entry_id/0_dh8dwwd7/version/100031/width/320","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=https://fod.infobase.com/PortalPlaylists.aspx?wID=102638&xtid=129514" "fod1000140016","","Big Noise Dispatches No. 6","","26 min 20 sec","['Big Noise Dispatches']","In Dispatches No. 6, Jeremy Scahill investigates Blackwater, Greg Palast goes to Liberia, we go inside the white power movement, and more.","stream","[]","['Middle East']","['History, Military', 'Geography', 'International relations', 'World politics', 'Military history']","[]","https://cdnsecakmi.kaltura.com/p/1067292/sp/106729200/thumbnail/entry_id/0_9ymfs9be/version/100011/width/320","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=https://fod.infobase.com/PortalPlaylists.aspx?wID=102638&xtid=140016" "fod1000154327","","Accidental Anarchist","","59 min 7 sec","[]","This is the remarkable story of how Carne Ross, once a leading UK diplomat, became an anarchist. In buses, for example, seats at the front are reserved for whites. Rosa Parks, a seamstress, lives in the city of Montgomery, Alabama, and has suffered from this social context ever since childhood. On December 1, 1955, she refuses to obey the driver of the bus she is on and give up her seat to a white passenger as laid down by the law. Arrested and jailed, she becomes the symbol of the Afro-American cause, and a young pastor, Martin Luther King, seizes on the event and starts a boycott of the city’s buses. Demonstrations, speeches—the protest movement grows and grows, and Rosa Parks becomes the “mother of the Civil Rights movement”. The machine is on the move, and nothing can stop it now. But even as crooners such as Frank Sinatra defined cool, they were haunted by accusations of Mafia ties reinforced in the media by Mario Puzo’s “The Godfather.” Over the next decades, Governor Mario Cuomo achieved success; Antonin Scalia became the first Italian American on the Supreme Court, and Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi was elected Speaker of the House of Representatives. But have Italian Americans finally shed the old stereotypes and become fully accepted in America? Rising populism and income inequality, however, coupled with a new array of world leaders may signal an end to this historic relationship. Some warn that President Trump's support for Brexit, attacks on the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, and threats to raise tariffs on the European Union mark a significant departure from the past and that some Europeans are less committed to a partnership with the United States. Others, however, discount these concerns, arguing that the transatlantic relationship has weathered turbulent times before. From the nuclear bomb to genetic modification, British science has always been at the cutting edge of discovery, but are British scientists incompetent meddlers, or misunderstood visionaries whose gifts to humanity are corrupted by the unscrupulous?","stream","[]","['United States']","['Archaeology', 'Physical sciences', 'History, Modern', 'Ethics', 'Technology', 'World politics', 'Medical innovations']","['Educational films']","https://cdnsecakmi.kaltura.com/p/1067292/sp/106729200/thumbnail/entry_id/0_x8ngorim/version/100001/acv/21/width/320","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=https://fod.infobase.com/PortalPlaylists.aspx?wID=102638&xtid=55681" "fod100052827","","My Land","[2013], c2011","82 min","[]","Born to a Moroccan Muslim father and a Tunisian Jewish mother, filmmaker Nabil Ayouch spent his childhood hearing divergent views about Israel and Palestine. Still wrestling with ""a conflict that never left me,"" Ayouch created this poignant documentary about young Israelis, displaced Palestinians, and the threads of tragic history woven between two communities with deep ties to the same land. Ayouch entered Lebanese refugee camps to record personal testimonies from elderly Palestinians about memories of their birthplaces. Then he visited those homes in present-day Israel to learn about the attitudes of the young people currently living there. This process of gathering perspectives enabled Ayouch to set up the film's evocative virtual encounters, in which the Israeli subjects view and react to the Palestinian testimonies. The results are moving, frequently surprising, and apt to help those who struggle to comprehend the hardships of the region.","stream","[]","['Middle East']","['Social structure', 'Political geography', 'Racism', 'Arab-Israeli conflict', 'World politics', 'Ethnicity', 'Comparative government']","['Educational films']","https://cdnsecakmi.kaltura.com/p/1067292/sp/106729200/thumbnail/entry_id/0_22hti2kx/version/100001/width/320","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=https://fod.infobase.com/PortalPlaylists.aspx?wID=102638&xtid=52827" "fod100047807","","Gerald Ford, from The WPA Film Library Speeches Collection","[2012], c1995","55 min","['WPA Film Library Speeches Collection']","This collection of significant speeches given by Gerald Ford covers his brief tenure as president, from his sudden elevation to the presidency upon the resignation of Richard Nixon through to the end of his short term in office.","stream","['Ford, Gerald R']","['United States']","['History, Modern', 'Political activists', 'World politics']","['Educational films']","https://cdnsecakmi.kaltura.com/p/1067292/thumbnail/entry_id/0_q2fhbwoz/width/252/type/1/vid_sec/3","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=https://fod.infobase.com/PortalPlaylists.aspx?wID=102638&xtid=47807" "fod1000283772","","Taken Hostage, Episode 1","","1 hr 52 min 46 sec","['Taken Hostage']","Explore how America’s quarter-century of unwavering support for its ally, the Shah of Iran, and the violent Islamic revolution that overthrew him in 1979, set the stage for the Iran hostage crisis.","stream","[]","[]","['International relations', 'International law and human rights', 'World politics', 'Human rights']","[]","https://cfvod.kaltura.com/p/1067292/sp/106729200/thumbnail/entry_id/1_lc6y3fvu/version/100051/width/320","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=https://fod.infobase.com/PortalPlaylists.aspx?xtid=283772&wID=102638" "fod100046871","","The WPA Film Library. This film describes what happened when the rigid policies instigated under Mao gave way to the era of Deng Xiao Ping, who ushered in unprecedented opportunities for creating personal wealth-as well as sociopolitical paradigm shifts that no one could anticipate.
