Just Food Oshkosh

Research Team:

Elizabeth (Za) Barron, James Porter, Kevin Crawford, Melissa Bublitz, Jim Feldman, Jon Hudson, and Maria Novotny

Project Description:

Food is foundational to human society and culture, touching every aspect of our lives. Recognizing this reality, SIRT associate director Elizabeth (Za) Barron began building connections with several non-profit organizations in Oshkosh, all of which see their work and mission intersecting in some way in issues of food. Starting with a workshop facilitated by Little Village Environmental Justice Organization executive director Kim Wasserman, Barron brought together representatives from ADVOCAP, the Oshkosh Area Community Pantry, the Oshkosh Area United Way, Fit Oshkosh, Growing Oshkosh, the Oshkosh Food Coop, and the Oshkosh Saturday Farmers Market. They discussed the organizations they represent, their values and goals for food justice, and their shared goals and interests. Moving forward, various compositions of the original group have met to continue investigating how they might collaborate to better address food justice throughout the Oshkosh community.

Outcomes:

Relationship building and increased awareness of community of stakeholders and their nuanced interests and goals.

Agreement to provide access to UWO garden spaces for some of ADVOCAP community garden clients set to be displaced from their current plots following the 2019 growing season, after ADVOCAP’s lease with the DNR expires.
