History Wars: Teaching Truths about America’s Past in a Time of Political Polarization
2026-02-18T21:30:00Z
Sage Hall 1216
OSH - History Club
“Who controls the past,” a character in George Orwell’s 1949 dystopian novel 1984 instructs, “controls the future….”Since a recent executive order was issued to “remove or rewrite [historical] content that may ‘disparage Americans’ or promote ‘corrosive ideology,” historians of the United States have reflected on Orwell’s warning and pondered the consequences of the most recent politicization and ideological reframing of our nation’s past. At the Liberty Bell Center in Philadelphia, National Park Service employees, according to the New York Times, have been ordered to cover up a sign about the “contradiction between the ideals of the Revolution and the reality of more than four million enslaved people….” A new group of donors and allies of the president have recently created an organization named Freedom 250 which will rival the taxpayer-supported America250 commemorative initiative and focus on “telling the great American story” rather than the stories told by cultural institutions that, supporters of this initiative claim, have been “hijacked by advocates of divisive social theories.”Debates about the meaning of U.S. history are certainly not new, but they have grown in intensity over the past decade. What do these debates tell us about the state of American political and cultural life? Who wants to revise what we claim to know about our past, and what is motivating them to do so? In the end, why does telling the truth—and teaching the truth—about U.S. history matter? On February 18 the UWO History Program, History Club, College of Public Affairs and Education (COPAE), and the campus Menard Center for the Study of Institutions and Innovation affiliate will host a discussion panel with seven historians of the United States—Professors Chong Moua, Gabriel Loiacono, Kyle Steele, Margaret Huettl, Michelle Kuhl, Steven Sheehan and Stephen Kercher—who will engage these questions from their own unique personal and professional perspectives. All members of the UWO academic community are invited to attend and engage in discussion on today’s “history wars.”

Center for Civic and Community Engagement
In schools we often try to shelter people, especially young people, from anxiety. But is that the best approach? Might it be better to challenge students to face their anxiety in an attempt to overcome it and increase their confidence? If so, how do we do that and do it well? And when should we do otherwise, providing accommodations for anxiety and stress? How do we do that well, and how do we choose which paths to take?
Featuring: Tracy Dennis-Tiwary & Katie Rose Guest Pryal, moderated by Dr. Tracy Slagter.
Join us for a reception and the event at 5:00 pm
There is a essay scholarship contest for this event. The scholarships are: 1st: $3000, 2nd: $2,000, 3rd: $1,000. Details will be available at the event.

Instead of focusing only on validating identities, we’ll think about what our lives could look like beyond systems that confine us. Together, we’ll reflect on fear, fatigue, joy, and community care—and imagine how we might look out for each other without making gender the cost of belonging or safety.
