Credit for Prior Learning – Information for Assessors

This page provides information for any faculty or IAS member who has been asked to be an Assessor for Credit for Prior Learning portfolio. You have been asked to serve this role because you are a subject matter expert who can evaluate a student’s work to determine if their learning outside of the traditional academic environment could be considered sufficient to satisfy the learning objectives of a particular class.

Start by learning about Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) and to see the university and college policies on CPL at UW Oshkosh.

Next, learn more about the CPL portfolio process.

If you agree assess an CPL portfolio, you will be asked to do the following:

  1. Provide a syllabus for the course that includes the learning objectives for the course.
  2. Meet with the student (via Zoom or in person) to discuss the student’s background and experiences and to advise as to the feasibility of receiving CPL for your course.
  3. Assess the student’s portfolio. After reading the portfolio, you will choose one of three options:
    • Recommend that the student receive credit for the course.
    • Recommend that the student NOT receive credit for the course.
    • Ask the student to complete an Additional Assignment to fill any gaps in their knowledge, with the assumption that completing the work successfully would result in a positive recommendation.

The Additional Assignment can be anything that you deem appropriate for the student to demonstrate that their learning has met the learning objectives for the course. Examples include:

  • An email that requests the student elaborate on a specific learning objective.
  • A supplemental assignment that demonstrates application of the course theories/concepts.
  • A submission of a video to demonstrate application of the learning objectives.

If, at any time, you have questions or comments about the portfolio process, contact the UW Oshkosh Credit for Prior Learning Coordinator.
