Credit for Prior Learning – Information for Academic Advisors

Everyone providing academic guidance to UW Oshkosh students should be aware of the options available for Credit for Prior Learning (CPL). Some of these options are assessed at admission, including

  • scores on Advanced Placement (AP) or similar courses taken in high school.
  • passing test scores for College Level Examination Program tests (CLEP tests).
  • transcripts showing grades for concurrent enrollment courses completed in high school (i.e., CAPP).
  • documentation of trainings or courses completed while in the military.
  • certification as an Emergency Medical Technician or in Basic Life Support, Advanced Life Support or First Aid.
  • other certifications completed for employment or volunteer training.

A student may ask you about their options for CPL, or you may suggest that the student pursue one or more potential CPL opportunities. These options include CLEP tests and the Credit for Prior Learning Portfolio option. In addition, some departments may have departmental tests or other methods for awarding Credit for Prior Learning.

Students who are especially likely to be eligible for Credit for Prior Learning include the following:

  • Veterans and active duty military
  • Students in specific majors, including
    • BSN@Home
    • Criminal Justice
    • Engineering Technology
    • Kinesiology
    • Computer Science
