Associate Vice Chancellor, Curricular Affairs & Student Academic Achievement

Dr. Charles HillHill

While serving as Associate Vice Chancellor, Dr. Charles Hill continues to serve as the Executive Director of the Division of Online and Continuing Education (OCE) at the
University of Wisconsin Oshkosh.  Before moving into the Executive Director position,          Dr. Hill was Director of the Online Degree and Certificate Programs in the Division.
His previous administrative experience includes terms as Director of the Writing Center, Coordinator of the Theme-Based Inquiry Seminar and Chair of the English Department.       In 2006-2007, he served as the Chancellor’s Leadership Fellow.

As Professor of Rhetoric in the English Department, Charles has taught courses in professional and technical writing, writing for online environments, linguistics and visual rhetoric.  Before taking a full-time administrative role, he served on numerous committees at the department, college, and university level, and also served a term on the Faculty Senate.

Charles received his Ph.D. in Rhetoric from Carnegie Mellon University and a B.A. and M.A. in English from Salisbury University.  He served one year as a post-doctoral Research Associate at the Learning Research and Development Center at the University of Pittsburgh before joining UW Oshkosh in 1993.  He has presented papers at over two        dozen conferences and published book chapters and articles in several journals, including TEXT Technology, Written Communication, and Reading Research Quarterly.  He is the co-editor, with Marguerite Helmers, of the volume Defining Visual Rhetorics.
