Kaden Van De Loo
September 12 – October 3, 2024
Annex Gallery
Reception: September 12, 6 – 7:30 pm
Kaden Van De Loo’s paintings explore formal relationships through recurring geometric forms bound to a system of constraints. The reappearance of the same geometric forms across the body of work allows them to become familiar to the viewer, but their endless material manifestations and relationships mean constant reconsideration. His forms exist in a flexible space and his single-colored grounds flatten the picture plane. Space ends at the surface’s edges, containing forms within those bounds and making each painting an isolated ecology within which forms materialize out of and disappear into.
Angelica Contreras Paseos: Strolling through imagined stories
October 10 – November 7, 2024
Annex Gallery
Artist Talk: October 10, 5 – 6 pm
Reception: October 10, 6 – 7:30 pm
Angelica Contreras is interested in exploring the relationships between identity, tradition, and pop culture, incorporating techniques like acrylic, oil, and collage into her pieces. The use of collaged material such as patterned papers, advertisement and newspaper cut-outs, to name a few, provide a palette of colors and textures for the subject’s surroundings. The use of materials is both calculated as serendipitous, leading her to create unusual cultural combinations thus providing spectators with a richer interpretation. Her work seeks to act as a bridge between various communities and cultures and thus reflecting on her own multicultural identity.
Amanda McCavour
October 24 – November 21, 2024
Allen Priebe Gallery
Artist Talk: October 24, 5 – 6 pm
Reception: October 24, 6 – 7:30 pm
Amanda McCavour is a Toronto-based artist who works with stitch to create large-scale embroidered installations. She is interested in thread’s assumed vulnerability, its ability to unravel, and its strength when it is sewn together. Through an exploration of line and its 2-d and 3-d implications, stitch is used in her artwork to explore various concepts such as connections to home, the fibers of the body and more formal considerations of thread’s accumulative presence. Amanda’s work explores embroidery’s duality- it’s subtle quality versus its accumulative presence and its structural possibilities versus its fragility.
