Community/Clinical Mental Health

Conduct counseling with clinic clients, assessing clients for suitability for counseling at the clinic and referring to other, community agencies as appropriate, preparing and maintaining own session notes, maintaining client record filing system, keeping statistics and filing necessary reports with clinic management, establishing knowledge of and working relationships with other community resources, interacting with clinic medical and nursing staff members, following clinic client scheduling procedures, assisting in clinic operations when the clinic is short staffed, staying current with the literature.

Low income, uninsured or on medical assistance

Community counseling emphasis. Must be a mature student who has experience with or strong desire to learn to work with persons with low incomes. Ability to practice various therapeutic modalities as indicated by client needs. Especially important to be able to practice rational/behavioral therapies. Many of the clinic's clients are Hispanic. Intern must understand or learn about diverse cultures. Ability to speak at least some Spanish is helpful. Ability to work with medical professionals and be conversant with medical terminology. Willingness to learn about and understand the uses and actions of various medications.
