Celebration of Scholarship and Creative Activity 2023
Serpentine
Joshua Sheldon
Sophomore, Music Composition
Abstract
In this presentation, I will demonstrate the creative process behind my original musical
composition, Serpentine, for solo cello. When composing a new composition, I create
restrictions to help focus my musical ideas. The music in Serpentine is restricted to a non-diatonic scale (not traditional major or minor scales), and a composition for only one
instrument. In this presentation I will show how I took a short musical idea and created a four-minute composition using the techniques of fragmentation, repetition, and rhythmic augmentation.
The presentation will conclude with a recorded performance of Serpentine from the most
recent UWO Composition Studio Recital.
