Celebration of Scholarship and Creative Activity 2022
“The Raccoon”

Leah Tollefson
Junior, Music Composition
Abstract
In this presentation, I will be discussing the compositional process involved in my musical work The Raccoon, for tenor saxophone. I will demonstrate how I took two short musical ideas and evolved them into phrases and larger sections. The motivation for this piece was to create music that tells a story. In particular, this work starts with the birth of a raccoon and its journey in life including becoming a mother and with her death as she scarifies herself for her kits. The presentation will conclude with a recording of a recent performance by Joshua Roberts from the Composition Studio Recital on April 12th, 2022.
