The Senate
Positions and Responsibilities
In general, senators are expected to be advocates for their fellow students on university matters that the OSG is involved in. Senators have legislative power to start debate, vote to reject or pass resolutions, and create new bylaws or initiatives that can benefit the student body.
Senators also are required to serve on one or two university committees as student representatives. It’s expected that all Senators will attend regular legislative sessions. OSG Senators usually will spend about two or three hours a week on these responsibilities, depending on the university committees they choose to serve on. Otherwise, responsibilities vary depending on the nature of a senate seat. There are three (3) main types of senators: At-Large, Advocacy, and Academic.
At-Large Senators – Represent and advocate on behalf of the student body at large with no specific type of university community in mind.
Advocacy Senators – Represent a specific community on campus. These senators are tasked with hosting or participating in related events, and authoring resolutions to benefit the community they represent.
Academic Senators– Represent specific colleges on campus. They are tasked with hosting or participating in an academic club, or event, and authoring resolutions that benefit the academic college they serve.
