Julia J. Chybowski earned a PhD in Musicology from UW-Madison and is currently Professor of Music at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. At UWO, she teaches global musics, Western music history surveys, African American studies, country music, music and social justice, and research seminars. She researches and publishes mostly about nineteenth-century American musical cultures and the history of music education, engaging in both archival work as well as critical race and gender studies. She presents regularly to the Society for American Music, The American Musicological Society, and Feminist Theory and Music Conference and has authored commissioned articles for reference collections including The Grove Dictionary of American Music (Oxford Music Online) and The Encyclopedia of American Musical Culture (ABC-CILO). Her original research is published in leading scholarly journals including American Music, The American Music Research Journal, Journal of Historical Research in Music Education, The Journal of the Society for American Music, The Journal of the American Musicological Society, Open Access Musicology, and Routledge’s Milestones in Music Education. Chybowski serves on committees and boards of directors that demonstrate her commitment to student research, innovative pedagogy, curricular reform, and equity/diversity initiatives in academia.
