Our Majors

Kinesiology ClassroomThe Department of Kinesiology offers two academic majors: Athletic Training and Kinesiology.

A minor is not required for these majors, however the Kinesiology Department recommends several minors for students to consider, these include: Business, Communication (Radio/TV/Film or Speech Communication), Journalism, Neurosciences, Psychology, and Sociology.


Athletic Training

The University of Wisconsin Oshkosh Athletic Training Program exists to provide an effective and interactive learning environment for individuals pursuing a career in athletic training and related allied health care professions. The program is committed to preparing high caliber graduates equipped to provide quality health care to physically active populations in a changing world.

_UWO8403.jpgThe Kinesiology major prepares undergraduate students with the knowledge, skills and abilities to work as professionals in exercise & fitness and/or strength & conditioning.

Choose from three emphases:

Students will choose an emphasis area in Exercise & Fitness, Strength & Conditioning, or Healthcare-Science.

Students in the Exercise & Fitness emphasis become skilled in conducting health and fitness appraisals, designing and implementing safe and effective exercise programs for the general population, and motivating individuals to maintain positive lifestyle behaviors.

Students in the Strength & Conditioning emphasis become skilled in performance assessment, developing safe and effective athletic performance enhancement through proper training and nutrition. Kinesiology professionals perform these activities in commercial, university, corporate, or community settings where their clients participate in health promotion, fitness and sports performance activities.

Students in the Healthcare-Science emphasis are provided a rigorous curriculum in the sciences for preparation for future graduate study. To see a comparison of the emphases, click here.

Our Mission

The mission of the Kinesiology major at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh is to provide a quality education that will prepare future entry-level exercise and fitness and/or strength and conditioning professionals. These students will be prepared to obtain certification through the American College of Sports Medicine as Health and Fitness Specialists and/or through the National Strength and Conditioning Association as Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialists. Academic preparation will incorporate both classroom and supervised practical experiences.

Our goal is to be recognized as one of the leading undergraduate Kinesiology programs in the United States.
