Orville C. Sherman was a student with a passion for journalism. During his time at the Oshkosh State Teachers College in the 1930s, now the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, Sherman was the editor-in-chief of The Advance, the college newspaper.

Applicants for this scholarship must be full-time AMP students at UW Oshkosh and must demonstrate financial need by submitting the financial aid form currently used by UW Oshkosh.

The fellowship was set-up in honor of Professor Coll’s many years of contributions to the department and his richly deserved reputation as a student-centered professor. He was chosen by the university as a Distinguished Teacher in 2003. Coll served as department chair, published two books and was the adviser of the department’s honor society. He retired in 2005.

The Fellowship is designed to help UW Oshkosh AMP students expand their horizons by providing financial assistance for taking advantage of professional opportunities outside the area. Specifically, the fellowship funding would be used to partially cover travel and related expenses for students who might not otherwise be able to take advantage of an internship opportunity/job shadow at a prominent journalism organization in a distant city, take part in a conference in the discipline of journalism or attend an academic competition for journalism students.

Established as a way to support and promote the educational advancement of minority students in advertising, multimedia journalism or public relations at UW Oshkosh.

The applicant must be a minority as defined by federal affirmative action guidelines. The ethnicities include American Indian or Alaska native, African American/black, Hispanic/Latino and Asian or Pacific Islander. He or she should be an incoming freshman or a new transfer student and must have demonstrated intent to pursue a career in the AMP department through participation in high school, college and/or other news media and declare AMP as his or her major, and demonstrate the potential for academic achievement at UW Oshkosh.

Jeff Griffith, a 1987 graduate of the department, established this yearly scholarship to promote the creative work of advertising students.

Applicant must be an AMP major with at least one full semester of classes remaining before graduation. GPA is not crucial for this scholarship. The portfolio must demonstrate excellent skills at critical thinking, writing and/or visual proficiency.

Mr. Horton was a member of the UW Oshkosh administration and faculty from 1963 to 1983. He was coordinator of public relations and executive director of communication services and taught public relations courses as a member of the department until his retirement.

He also was executive director of Northeastern Wisconsin Scholastic Press Association (NEWSPA), an organization available to assist high school newspapers and yearbooks with their publications by hosting an annual contest and annual conference held on campus. He died in September 1988. His family and friends established this memorial in his honor.

Applicant should have a strong career interest in public relations and exhibit an understanding and a commitment to the professional standards that are expected of PR practitioners.

Dr. Lippert came to UW Oshkosh to head the journalism department in 1966 and served as chair until his untimely death in 1983 in an automobile accident. The success of the department and that of the college newspaper, The Advance-Titan, was due to Lippert’s guidance.

In 1977 he gained accreditation for the UW Oshkosh Journalism program. Lippert was a well-known newsman in Wisconsin, active in many organizations. His family established the memorial in this honor.

The applicant is a junior or senior student majoring in journalism with the emphasis in writing/editing. They must have at least a 3.0 overall GPA with a strong career interest in newspapers and an understanding of the commitment a journalist makes to the ideal of responsible journalism.

Jinny graduated from the AMP Department, news-editorial sequence, in June 1985 and worked as a reporter until her death in 1987, due to a rare disease that deteriorates the muscles. Her family and friends established the memorial in her honor.

The applicant is a junior or senior majoring in advertising, multimedia journalism or public relations with the emphasis in writing/editing, and has at least a 3.0 overall GPA. He or she must have a strong career interest in professional journalism, evidenced by experience on the staff of the Advance-Titan or other newspaper or by the intention to seek and hold a student internship on a newspaper staff.
