Student Technology Fee
A 2% fee is added to student tuition to generate funds to improve campus technology. Past proposals and strategic use of the funds set the budget. This is reviewed by the OSA Senate and then approved by the Chancellor annually.
Purpose
The overall purpose of the Student Technology Fee (STF) is to enhance student access to information technologies for learning. Specific uses of the Student Technology Fee will relate to the following broad goals, which have been identified as top priorities by the Oshkosh Student Association (OSA):
- staffing and services for computer labs
- student computer lab workstations
- maintaining software in student computer labs
- maintaining classroom hardware (computers and AV equipment)
- training for students on the use of computers, software, email, networks, etc.
- networking, email, and/or wireless access for students
The OSA may propose modifications to these priorities. Goals identified in the University’s Strategic Plan are also used to direct use of STF funds.
Process
At the start of the fee IT and OSA agreed on a set of strategic needs: additional IT staffing, student employees, and printing support were the primary needs. Since this did not cover all the funds, proposals were sought from across campus. After many years of approving the same proposals it was agreed that these would be added to the originally established needs and not require a proposal to request funding. Currently, these perpetual proposals and strategic needs take up most of the funds.
IT creates the budget based on prior student support and campus strategic needs. This budget is shared with the OSA Senate as the committee to review the budget. Adjustments may be made as mutually agreed upon by IT and OSA. The final recommended budget is sent to the Chancellor for his review and approval.
While proposals are no longer actively sought, you can email ocio@uwosh.edu to make a request for STF funding. If there are funds available to cover the request, it will be shared with the OSA Senate to determine if they support the request. If supported, it will be funded.
