Placement and Advancement
Students take two formal placement tests, including the UW System English Placement Test, during orientation week to determine which level of instruction best meets their needs. Initial English placement testing examines grammar, vocabulary, speaking, reading, listening, and composition skills.
Decisions regarding advancement within the program for continuing students are made by the program coordinator based on student performance and instructor recommendations.
Once placed at an appropriate level, students are expected to attend classes and complete assignments. Those who fail to maintain satisfactory progress may be asked to withdraw from the program.
Students attend classes daily to develop and ensure steady improvement in their language skills. Because absence from class may slow down this process, any student missing more than ten percent of the scheduled classes is placed on probation, and his or her sponsor is notified. Individualized counseling with the student is arranged to address attendance issues. Serious attendance problems may result in dismissal from the program.
Conditional University Admissions
Undergraduate applicants who meet all admissions criteria except minimum language requirements may be conditionally admitted to the University. (These students will be admitted to UW Oshkosh on the condition that they raise their English proficiency level to the minimum required by UW Oshkosh.)
After raising their English proficiency score to the minimum required for university admission, conditionally admitted students matriculate (transition from the Intensive English Program to full admission and regular university courses) without re-applying for admission to UW Oshkosh.
Conditionally admitted students may raise their English proficiency score by completing the UW Oshkosh Intensive English Program, by completing another pre-approved English language program, or by re-testing with the TOEFL or IELTS.
IEP Admission for Exchange and Visiting Students
Exchange and Visiting students may apply for admission to the IEP for the semester prior to their first semester of regular university studies. The IEP is not included in exchange agreements and standard IEP fees apply.
Partners may send exchange or visiting students for a summer or semester of IEP followed by one or two semesters of exchange.
