Study Abroad/Away

Students may be eligible to receive financial aid for study abroad/away programs if they are receiving college credit that applies to a particular degree program at UW Oshkosh. The Office of International Education is the first point of contact for all study abroad/away programs and hosts a catalog of all study abroad/away opportunities available to UWO students and other programs sponsored by UW System. Students may only receive federal financial aid for a summer study abroad/away trip if they are enrolled in 6 or more credits.

Grants and loans that normally are available to students taking classes at  UW Oshkosh may be available to students as long as a student has not already reached the maximum amount of aid that can be received in a academic year. Parent PLUS loans and private (alternative) loans may also be available.

Wisconsin Travel Grant

UW System Study Abroad Grants up to $1,000 for semester programs and $750 for interim programs are available to eligible Wisconsin residents. Awards are dependent on availability of funds, so we cannot guarantee funding for all eligible students. UW Oshkosh sponsored programs will receive priority consideration for the Wisconsin Travel Grant. Apply Now

Meet with your Financial Aid Counselor

Set up an appointment with one of our Financial Aid Counselors to ensure you receive all study abroad/away financial resources available to you as a UW Oshkosh student.  You can also visit the Financial Aid Office in Dempsey 104 during walk-in hours, Monday – Friday, 10 a.m.–3 p.m. Our office recommends meeting with a counselor no fewer than two weeks prior to your study abroad/away application deadline. Who’s my counselor?

Step-by-step Instructions for Study Abroad/Away Financial Aid

In order to receive financial aid for a study abroad/away trip, students must complete do the following:

  1. Fill out the FAFSA for the upcoming academic year. Please note that summer session is considered part of the beginning of an academic year — not the end. The summer financial aid application becomes available in April each year.
  2. Apply for your desired study abroad/away program. If you need to complete and return forms, applications and deposits by a specified deadline, we cannot guarantee funding if you miss a deadline.
  3. If your study abroad program is sponsored by another UW System school, you must fill out a consortium agreement form and send it to the sponsoring school. The sponsoring school will send it back to UW Oshkosh once its completed. Your financial aid package cannot be disbursed until this form is received.

Additional Information

There are many companies and universities outside the UW System that offer study abroad programs. While these companies may be legitimate, processing financial aid for these programs can be a challenge. If you are considering either of these option, please confer with the Office of International Education before you make a decision.
