Firepit Use Procedures
Outdoor fires, campfires, fire pits, grills, and other open flame activities are prohibited on UW-Oshkosh property unless specifically authorized through the Outdoor Fire Use Permit process. This requirement helps ensure compliance with University policy, state regulations, and campus safety expectations.
Permit Types
One-Time Use Permit
For a single event occurring on a specific date.
Requirements
- Submit at least 14 days before the event.
- Permit expires after completion of the event.
- Additional insurance may be required.
Routine Activity Permit
For recurring outdoor fire activities at an approved location.
Requirements
- Valid for up to one year.
- Intended for activities such as recurring cookouts or grill events
Required Safety Provisions
Before any approved fire event:
- Designate a Fire Safety Attendant
- Fire Safety Attendant must have completed fire extinguisher training within the previous year
- Obtain a fire extinguisher through a work order
- Provide a minimum 5-gallon water bucket
- Maintain required clearances around the fire location
- Keep extinguisher and water within 10 feet of the fire pit at all times

Fire Safety Rules
Allowed Fuel
- Untreated firewood only
- Firewood must originate within 10 miles of the UW-Oshkosh campus

- Treated wood
- Pallets
- Plastics
- Trash
- Accelerants
- Unknown materials
- Charcoal in fire pits
Prohibited Ignition Sources
Do not use:
- Gasoline
- Kerosene
- Alcohol
- Lighter fluid
