Why are there Turnitin errors on my dropbox?

When copying a course, you may see a red error indicating there is a problem with Turnitin on a dropbox. This page will explain the problem and how to resolve it.


When copying dropboxes into a new semester you may notice that some dropboxes include an error.  This is happening because Turnitinmade a change to the way it handles dates between D2L and Turnitin.
It is important to remember that although D2L and Turnitin or integrated and work together almost seamlessly.  They are still two separate systems.  D2L does not require a start date, due date or end date when creating a dropbox.  The situation in Turnitin is different, Turnitin NEEDS dates in order to function properly. 
Normally when you create a new dropbox in D2L, Turnitin knows this is a new dropbox and uses the current date as the "start date".  It will then set an end date for two weeks after the start date.  Unfortunatly, the start date does not transfer to Turnitin when a dropbox is copied from one semester to the next.  This is why errors occur on dropboxes copied to a new semester.  


Fortunately, resolving the error is very easy.  Just follow the steps below.
  1. Edit the Dropbox Folder
  2. Click the Restrictions tab.
  3. Click the checkbox next to the Has Start date field.
  4. Click on the Turnitin Tab.
  5. Click the checkbox next to "Enable Turnitin for this Folder"
  6. Click Save and Close at the bottom of the screen.
