D2L 10.3 Video Features Guide

D2L will be upgraded to version 10.3 in June 2014. The system will be unavailable from 10:00 PM on June 4 through 10:00 AM on June 5th. The following includes detail of features included in the upgrade.

D2L Content

  • Slight changes to overall look; greater separation of navigation panel and colored icons have been added.
  • Improved ability to delete unwanted topics.
  • The "Change File" command has been moved to a convenient topic dropdown.
  • Content Slide-out map will primarily aid in navigation but also allows for new content to be quickly added or reordered.
  • Instructors can now prevent students from sending a piece of content to D2L Binder or reflecting on the item in ePortfolio.
  • Completion Summaries allow instructors to see which students have viewed a particular piece of content without having to review User Progress
  • Instructors can now mark a content topic (HTML only) as updated and a notification will be sent to the student.

D2L Discussions

  •  Significant overhaul to overall design of the pages.  There are still Forums and Topics but individual posts are organized differently.  Original posts are visible, replies to the post are on a separate page.  The goal is to simplify reading by putting a single conversation on a single page.
  • "Compose" button has been renamed "Start a New Thread"
  • New slide-out navigation makes moving from one discussion to another very simple.
  • Discussion statistics now keep track of original messages and replies.  Previous versions combined these two designations into one "authored" statistic.
  • When a student views a discussion (it appears on their screen) it is automatically marked as "read".  In previous versions a post would need to be clicked in order to be marked as "read"
  • New rating options include the opportunity for students to upvote/downvote posts or "like" posts.
  • The option "A user must compose a message before participating in the topic" is now available at the forum level.  This will be very helpful to those instructors that use small group discussions.
  • The ability to restore deleted discussion topics has been given to instructors.

  • The ability to restore deleted dropboxes has been added to this version.
  • Instructors will now be able to add feedback in D2L even if a student has not submitted an assignment to the dropbox.
  • The ability to electronically mark-up students' submissions to the dropbox has been greatly improved in this version of D2L.  Now you can download all the submissions, use track changes in MS Word and then upload the graded assignments.  D2L will automatically match up a students marked-up submission with their original submission.

  • The Quizzing tool in D2L has remained largely unchanged.  Some of the options have been rearranged so that the features used most often are on the main tab.
  • The submission view option has been modified to allow for an expiration date.  This makes the process of having a submission view become unavailable much smoother.

Other Improvements

  • The Role-Switch widget is going to be removed from the course homepage.  The feature will now be available by clicking your name in the upper right corner of the screen.  This change makes the option available anywhere in your D2L course.  You will no longer have to go to course home to switch roles.
  • Greater Integration between the Content page and other tools.  When a link is added to Content to a different area of the course, there is a much tighter integration.  Instructors can modify properties of discussions, quizzes, etc from the Content Page and Students can participate in discussions directly from Content.
  • Floating Buttons have been added to many areas of D2L.  Instead of scrolling to the bottom of the page to save changes, the buttons will always be located at the bottom of the window.
