MIEA

The Mindfulness Institute for Emerging Adults (MIEA)—formerly known as Koru Mindfulness—is an evidence-based mindfulness education organization that originated at Duke University and is now widely used across higher education. It has developed and certified the Intro to Mindfulness curriculum, specifically tailored for individuals aged 18 to 30 (i.e., emerging adults), and grounded in rigorous empirical research showing benefits for stress reduction, better sleep, enhanced self-compassion, and overall well-being (miea.com, students.dartmouth.edu). While designed with emerging adults in mind, the skills and practices taught are highly applicable across the lifespan, making them valuable for anyone seeking to increase resilience, presence, and emotional well-being. The MIEA approach uses small-group learning, practical tools, relatable metaphors, daily mindfulness practice, and structured instruction to help participants integrate mindfulness into their daily lives.

For the Fall 2025 Semester, the Counseling Center is pleased to offer Intro to Mindfulness groups both on campus at the Counseling Center, for our clients, and off campus via the Student Recreation & Wellness Center, open to faculty, staff, and students. The dates for this fall will be:

  • September 29
  • October 20
  • November 10
  • December 1

These groups will teach the various skills from MIEA throughout the semester. You do not have to register ahead of time, just show up! Those interested do not have to attend all 4. All groups will be from 3:30 PM to 4:30 PM in Studio A on the second floor of the Student Recreation & Wellness Center (SRWC).

Additionally, departments interested in hosting their own training sessions exclusively for their teams or units can email us at counseling@uwosh.edu to inquire further. We are proud to share that our own staff members, Becky Parman Knoll and Tyler Volkert, are certified MIEA instructors, ensuring high-quality delivery of this evidence-based curriculum.
