Overview of the Computer Science major, and the Systems and Theory emphasis

Students  do the Computer Science major and can further choose to do the optional Systems and Theory emphasis.
As a freshman or sophomore Computer Science major, your focus is on a basic core of courses. Then in your junior and senior years you can choose whether you want to pursue the optional Systems and Theory emphasis. Both the major and the emphasis focus on software development, with the differences between them determined by the types of software development skills that you learn.

  • The  Computer Science major focuses on a study of the formal methods that help ensure application and infrastructure software systems are reliable, maintainable, and meet their design goals. This major is becoming increasingly important as computer systems at a variety of companies and organizations become larger and more complicated, often being developed by teams of programmers who must carefully coordinate their efforts.
  • The optional Systems and Theory Emphasis focuses on the fundamental practical and theoretical foundations of computer science. It is particularly appropriate for students who want to develop scientific and technical infrastructure software such as compilers, operating systems, and computer graphics.  It also offers the most comprehensive preparation for students who are considering a graduate degree in computer science after finishing the major at UW Oshkosh. This emphasis requires some additional math and computer science theory courses. It is accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET, 111 Market Place, Suite 150, Baltimore, MD 21202-4012, phone: (410) 347-7700.

Overview of the Software Technology major

This Software Technology program is open only to students who have graduated with an A.A.S degree in Software Developer from Northeast Wisconsin Technical College, Fox Valley Technical College and Lakeshore Technical College. The specific courses that will transfer are defined in separate articulation agreements for each college. A brief summary of the courses required for the software technology major is here.

Much of the information about the majors on these pages has been collected into an Advisement Bulletin, which you may download and use to help in planning your schedule and making sure that you are meeting all of the major requirements. Hard copies of this bulletin are also available at the departmental office. You should also feel free to make an appointment with your faculty advisor or the department chair if you have advising questions.
