Blog Entry for the Week Ending March 10th

by Hilgendorf, Grady last modified Mar 17, 2017 07:40 PM
A re-cap of things that I did during this week, problems I have run into, and what I plan to accomplish before the next post. Week 1: March 5th - March 10th.

Class Progress

OpenMRS server

For the week, we were given time to start up a simple maven server for OpenMRS that was running on our own machines. The set up was simple and straight forward but trying to run a server on a virtual machine was a mentally stressful task. While I was able to get the activity finished, it took a significant amount of time. The reason for this little setback was due to the virtual machine most likely not having enough resources to run efficiently, so it took nearly double the amount of time it should have taken.

Individual Project

I received good feedback from my facilitator to go ahead on my possible addition to the pedometer from the 500 lines or less book. I proposed to add a stair counter or floor counter, giving you the number of floors you have climbed during the time traveled. It was a simple decision but seems rather difficult to implement due to the accelerometer that the project uses instead of a GPS location.

I also made progress on the language that the project uses. Ruby is a fairly simple language. It uses definitions to make functions to an end at some point in the code. you can run code at any point, similar to running a javascript code through Node. I haven't actually started on the project but I feel like I have a good grasp on the basics of Ruby to attempt to make a change within the next week.

Team Project

The team project is coming along smoothly. We have all the things we will need to make the installer. we now have to figure out in what order and how to run the installer during that point. The thing we really need to focus on right now is the write up for the project to get approved but the facilitator and his assistant.

For this next week period, I plan on starting trying to implement my floors climbed function in Ruby. It may seem easy but I know that I will run into some sort of issue from learning an entirely new language. My group needs to start working on our outline document explaining our project. I believe that we will run into issues concerning what to include in the document but we will eventually it will work it out.

I have hard times ahead but I will soldier on because that is who I am. Signing off for this week.
