DEAN’S NOTE
It’s less than two months until Spring Commencement, which will take place at 9am on Saturday, May 18. We are in need of seven volunteers to serve as COLS marshals:
- One grand marshal to lead the platform party
- One graduate school marshal to lead the graduate students
- One graduate school announcer to read the names
- Two COLS marshals to lead the undergraduates, at least one of whom should be from the Fox Cities campus
- Two undergraduate announcers to read the names
Please let me know if you are interested in serving in one of these roles by April 1, and thank you in advance!

PROGRAM UPDATES
- Two COLS faculty have been awarded Universities of Wisconsin Fellowships for 2025-26 at the Institute for Research in the Humanities at UW Madison. Stewart Cole (Environmental Studies and English) will spend the Fall 2025 semester in residence working on his current book project, The Haunted and the Hunted: Human and Nonhuman Animals in British Literature between the Wars. Michelle Mouton (History) will spend Spring 2026 in residence working on her current book project, Kriegskinder: German Children from the Second World War to the Cold War, 1944-1955.
- Beth Hubbard (Radio TV Film) won Best Sound Design for Last Year’s Tomorrow at BLASTOFF (Season 12) in Los Angeles. This is her second sound design award for this film, following her Best Sound Design win at the 2024 SoCal Film Awards.
FACULTY AND STAFF RESEARCH
- JaeHan Bae (Art) published “Asian American Art Teachers’ Counternarratives on Race, Marginalization, and Inclusivity” in Studies in Art Education.
- Beth Johnson (Geology) co-authored (along with a former student) an article for commentary in Nature Reviews Earth & Environment on perspectives on safety and health considerations for individuals who choose to do fieldwork in the geosciences while pregnant.
STUDENT NEWS
- The Whitburn Center is hiring a Student Research Assistant for the summer to support the Wisconsin Alliance for Civic Trust (WisACT) program. This initiative aims to promote trust in our political system and to support election integrity and peaceful engagement. It is open to students in the School of Public Affairs and Global Engagement (PAGE). Please share with students you think may be interested. Applications are due April 15.
- Students from the Advance-Titan and the AMP Department performed very well at the Wisconsin News Association’s 2024 Better Newspaper Contest. Ella Sasse took first and third place for Advertisement; Claudia Seamer, Kelly Hueckman, and Jacob Link received second place for Website; Josh Lehner received second and third place for Infographic; and Aubrie Selsmeyer, Cassidy Johnson, Anya Kelley, Kelly Hueckman, Jacob Link, and Jessica Duch all received honorable mentions.
UPCOMING EVENTS
- We hope to see you tomorrow (Thursday, March 20) for the next installment of the COLS Faculty Showcase, featuring Jess Lucas (Biology) talking about “Green Sperm through Space and Time.” The talk will take place 11:30 am-12:30 pm in Swart 113 and via Teams.
- The next Whitburn Wednesday event will feature four UWO faculty, including Juan García Oyervides (Global Languages and Cultures/Chicana/o and Latinx Studies), speaking about “Improving Language Access in Oshkosh through Campus-Community Partnerships.
