DEAN’S NOTE
Happy Friday, everyone! As I am sure you are all aware, there has been a lot going on at the federal level in relation to higher education, and the pace of news has been dizzying. The Universities of Wisconsin has set up a Federal Updates page that has links to the latest executive orders and related matters. Alex Hummel serves as the UW Oshkosh representative on that group. As of this writing, the College is not advising any course of action that would require anyone to do anything differently than they have in the past in terms of curriculum or student support. Just keep showing up for our students and doing what you’re doing! Should anything change you can expect communication. Please feel free to reach out to me directly if you have questions or concerns.
DEPARTMENT UPDATES
- Pascale Manning (English) moderated a panel discussion — between Tribal Historic Preservation Officers, Nahwahquaw David Grignon (Menominee), Nąąwącekǧize Bill Quackenbush (Ho-Chunk), and UW Milwaukee professor of archaeology, Jennifer Haas — for the inaugural event launching the Oshkosh Public Museum’s “Bridging Past and Present” series. The panel was titled “Exploring Native American Cultural Heritage: Menominee Park Village, City of Oshkosh” and served to introduce audiences to various expert perspectives on the 2023-24 Pratt Trail archaeological excavation.
FACULTY RESEARCH
- Bill Gillard (English) wrote the introduction to Midnight Pleasures, a short story collection by Wisconsin author Robert Bloch originally published in 1987 and reissued this year by Valancourt Books. Bloch is best known for his novel Psycho (1959), which Alfred Hitchcock adapted into a film.
- Timothy Gleason (Advertising, Multimedia Journalism & Public Relations) authored “Marisa Scheinfeld’s Art of Adventure” in the Journal of American Culture. The article examines Scheinfeld’s photography of abandoned Borscht Belt hotels in New York State’s Catskill Mountains.
