DEAN’S NOTE

Mark your calendars for a series of upcoming events!

  • First up, Faculty Committee is planning an all-college social for Friday, October 25, 3:00 pm at Sturgeon Spirits (2663 Oregon Street, Oshkosh).
  • Next, our first installment of the COLS Faculty Showcase will be Tuesday, October 29, 11:30 am-12:30 pm in Swart 113 and online. John Beaver (Physics) will present “The Art and Science of Lo-Fi Photography: New Possibilities for Old Techniques.”
  • Finally, the second Faculty Showcase event will be Monday, November 25, 11:30 am-12:30 pm in Swart 113 and online. Bill Gillard (English) will present “The Strange Origins of Climate Change Fiction.”

DEPARTMENT UPDATES

  • On October 10, the Sociology and Public Administration department and Sociology Club at UWO did a fruitful and fun service + social event, volunteering at the Oshkosh Area Community Pantry and then hanging out for a bit at Bare Bones Brewery on a beautiful evening.
     

FACULTY RESEARCH

  • COLS was well represented by faculty, current undergraduates, and alumni at the 1st Wisconsin Science Education and Research (WiSER) Conference October 4-6. Daisy Wilson (double major Biology/Psychology) presented a poster on PET polymer synthesis with mentor Brant Kedrowski (Chemistry). Laurie Parks (Biomedical Science major) shared class research on antimicrobial resistance from home kitchen sinks with Sabrina Mueller-Spitz (Biology). Jessica Lucas (Biology) gave a talk on her research on plant kinesin proteins.
  • Mark Lattery (Physics and Astronomy) was invited to give an international physics-teacher workshop in the Netherlands, November 18-19.

STUDENT NEWS

  • Students from Psi Chi, the international honor society in Psychology, completed the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) fundraising walk in Appleton and as a group raised $735.
