Economics Master of Science in Applied Economics Partnership Program

Highly motivated students who want to obtain a master’s degree in Economics can take advantage of a partnership between the Economics Departments at UWO and Marquette University (MU). Specifically, qualified students can capitalize on a “4+1” collaboration with the Marquette University Graduate School of Management to earn a Master of Science in Applied Economics (MSAE) in as little as one extra year.

How the Accelerated Program Works
  • Marquette University will accept certain upper-level UWO electives for graduate credit, for those students who do additional course-related work in a designated independent study and are admitted into the MU-MSAE graduate program.
  • Up to two of these UWO courses will be counted by Marquette as satisfying part of its graduate electives requirement.
  • These courses will both fulfill the requirements for undergraduate work at UWO as well as count toward graduate credits required by Marquette.
  • The MU-MSAE program requires 10 courses and a master’s project.
  • Completing the two courses while still enrolled at UWO effectively reduces the time requirement at Marquette from four semesters to three.
  • As students can take two summer courses at Marquette, this can reduce the time needed to complete MSAE requirements to 12-months.
Qualifying UWO Courses
  1. Public Sector Economics (Econ-403)
  2. Money and Banking (Econ-405)
  3. International Capital Markets (Econ-410)
  4. Labor Economics (Econ-431)
  5. Industrial Organization (Econ-466)

Note: 1) A minimum grade of a “B” is required in each class for course credit to be accepted by MU as meeting its requirements. 2) Each course also requires successful completion of a zero-credit pass/fail independent study course which contains the additional course work component necessary for the class to transfer with graduate credit. A grade of “pass” in the independent study is based on an expectation of at least “B” level performance.

Eligibility to enroll in a UWO-MU partnership program independent study
  • Must have both a minimum of a 3.00 cumulative GPA at UWO and a minimum of a 3.00 cumulative GPA in all of the Economics courses taken thus far.

Note: Grades of “B” or better in both Intermediate Microeconomic Theory (Econ-329) and Intermediate Macroeconomic Theory (Econ-331) are also expected before students should consider applying for admission into the MU-MSAE program and are the minimum expectation before expecting a positive reference from a UWO faculty member (MU admissions requirements listed below).

If Interested, What to Do?
  1. Consult with UWO economics faculty to discuss whether this program is a good fit for you. Interest in the program alone does not guarantee acceptance by Marquette University.
  2. Formally apply to the Marquette University Graduate School of Management in your senior year.
  3. Take the GRE or GMAT in the fall of your senior year, and then apply for financial aid, if desired.
