Sage Hall

Sage Hall, UW Oshkosh’s first new academic building since 1971, opened for classes in fall 2011. The word “sage” has multiple meanings that lend themselves to an academic building that is energy efficient, including:

  • a mentor in spiritual and philosophical topics who is renowned for profound wisdom
  • having wisdom that comes with age and experience
  • aromatic fresh or dried gray-green leaves used widely as seasoning
  • any of various plants of the genus Salvia; a cosmopolitan herb

The word “sage” also is associated with Socrates and the Socratic Method of inquiry, and it aligns well with the “Nature of Wisdom” and “Wisdom of Nature” phrases imprinted in the decorative cast stone panels located on the building’s exterior.

More than $5 million in private funds were raised in support of the four-story, 191,000-square-foot building, which took two years to construct.

Sage Hall Contains:

27 State-Of -The-Art Classrooms

Two lecture halls

23 Computer Labs

Trading room to track global stocks and markets

Along with other unique amenities:

  • Sage Cafe, which serves Starbucks coffee
  • Courtyard
  • Green roof with a raised garden

Sage Hall is the most environmentally friendly and efficient building of its kind in the state.  Designed for a gold LEED rating from the U.S. Green Building Council, the building supports the University’s mission to be sustainable through features that offer utilization of natural light, solar panels and a green roof. The sustainable features are expected to save $182,000 annually.

The U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED certification registry lists nine building, renovation or expansion projects in the New North region as having achieved Gold status. Sage Hall is the only academic building among those nine. Statewide, 210 projects have achieved some level of LEED certification, according to the registry.
