Message of Support

We want to offer reassurance that both the Action Plan and the review of your course or your reflections will be approached in a positive and supportive way. If your Action Plan, course review (for instructors) and/or reflections (for professional staff) need improvement, then, we will provide support so that you can successfully complete the program.

Last summer, all 142 participants who participated in all the programming completed the program successfully. We anticipate the same results this year.

As a reminder, the Provost is providing significant funding for this initiative. Therefore, Dr. Grady and I must demonstrate that the funding resulted in shifts in instructors’ and professional staff members’ knowledge of and approach toward supporting 1st- and 2nd-year students’ success.

Both the action plan and the review of courses will provide us with information about the impact of the funding on our preparedness to support 1st- and 2nd-year students in the fall.

After review of both your Action Plan and your provided course, we will inform you either that you have completed the program or provide you with steps by which you can complete it.

Once you have completed the program, you will receive your $1,000 stipend. Please keep in mind that it takes about a month to process the stipend.

The Post-Pre Survey

Here is a link to the Post-Pre Survey for the program:

We designed the survey as an opportunity for you to reflect on your participation in the program. And, we appreciate your completion of it.

For Professional Staff:

In order to move toward completion of the program, participants who are professional staff need to take the following three steps: 1) submit an Action Plan; 2) complete a Post-Pre Survey; and 3) provide a monthly reflection on the integration of your learning from the program into your work.

The deadline for the completion of the first two requirements is the end of the day on August 16. For the completion of the last requirement, there are three deadlines, one for each reflection: Oct. 1st, Nov. 1st, and December 1st. More details about how to meet these requirements are below.

Instructions for the Action Plan

Length: Two-pages single-spaced.

Layout: Provide two sections which include 1) a brief description of your role on campus and the ways you support students through it, and 2) an action plan.

Action Plan: In this section, first, provide an overview of the ways you plan to change your support of students based on your participation in the program. These changes should reflect some of the priorities laid out in the program’s events.

Then, please connect your specific learning from each of the three themes, 1) equity;  2) preparedness to support students’ success; and 3) mental health and wellness to changes you will make, whether these changes be at the macro or micro level.

Submit Your Action Plan: Please email your Action Plan to Dr. Damira Grady, gradyd@uwosh.edu

Instructions for the Monthly Reflections

Length: One page single-spaced

Reflection: Professional staff should provide a reflection each month on one of the themes of the program. In October, the theme to reflect on will be equity; in November, on your preparedness to support 1st- and 2nd-year students’ success; and, in December, on mental health and well-being. Each month the reflection should outline specific ways that you used your learning from particular parts of the program to better support students on campus, address the implementation of your action plan, and specifically identify any barriers you have encountered.

Optional Debriefing: Each professional staff member is invited to participate in a reflection debriefing meeting with other professional staff. These debriefing sessions are meant to create space to continue the conversations discussed over the 3-day training, share resources, and examine progress.

Dates:

Dates: October 15th, 8 am-9:30 am

November 15th, noon-1:30pm

December 15th, 3pm-4:30pm

A link to the meetings will be provided to all professional staff participating in the program before they take place.

Submit Your Monthly Reflections: Please email your Monthly Reflections to Dr. Damira Grady, gradyd@uwosh.edu

For Instructors:

In order to move toward completion of the program, participants who are instructors—faculty or instructional academic staff (IAS)—need to take the following five steps: 1) submit an Action Plan; 2) Complete a Post-Pre Survey; 3) choose one Canvas course which has the items from the program’s checklist within it to share with a program reviewer; 4) provide clear directions to the reviewer on how to find the items on the checklist in the Canvas course; and 5) add the reviewer to the Canvas course you have chosen to be reviewed.

The deadline for the completion of these five requirements is the end of the day on August 16. More details about how to meet these requirements are below.

Instructions for the Action Plan

Length: Two-pages single-spaced.

Layout: Provide two sections which include 1) a brief description of the course that you are inviting reviewers to evaluate, and 2) an action plan.

Action Plan: In this section, first, provide an overview of the major changes that you plan to make in your course based on your participation in the program. These changes should reflect some of the priorities laid out in the program’s checklist.

Then, connect your specific learning from each of the three days of events on 1) equity;  2) instructor preparedness to support students’ academic success; and 3) mental health and wellness to changes you have made or will make within your courses, whether these changes be at the macro or micro level.

Submit Your Action Plan: Please email your Action Plan to your reviewer listed below and copy Jordan Landry, landry@uwosh.edu.

The Best Practice Checklist

The checklist for the program is the evidence that you will provide that you took specific forms of action in response to participating in the July trainings.

We are requesting evidence specifically in relation to the program’s learning objectives around equity, mental health and wellness, and instructor preparedness to support students in ways that will increase their sense of belonging, self-efficacy, and academic achievement. We ask that you provide this evidence by sharing one of your Fall Canvas courses with us.

To do so, we will ask you to invite your reviewer to your chosen Canvas course and send the reviewer an email letting them know where they might find the components in the checklist. Instructions on how to add a reviewer to your course are below, in case you’re not familiar with this process.

Instructions for Adding Reviewers to Your Course

It is your choice whether you want to add the reviewers to a Master course within Canvas or to your Fall 2021 Instructional Course. Brian Ledwell has announced that course cards for Fall semester will be available on August 9.

To add the reviewer to your chosen course, within the course in Canvas, click “People” in navigation on the left side of the screen. Then, click the “+People” button. Next, enter the e-mail address of your reviewer and, under the heading “Role,” use the dropdown menu to choose “Teacher Reviewer” as the role for the reviewer. Once you have provided that info, click “Next.” Then, on the next screen, click the “Add Users” button.
