Center for Excellence in Teaching & Learning

CETL’s Mission

The Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) supports instructors in all phases of their teaching careers by offering innovative and inspiring programming, one-on-one consultations, classroom observations, support for Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) projects, and opportunities for faculty to gather and discuss teaching successes and challenges. Serving the entire campus, CETL partners with instructional designers in all of the University’s schools and also offers tailored support to faculty teaching in our general education program. Retention begins in the classroom, and CETL is committed to ensuring that faculty have the resources they need to provide our students the high-quality, liberal arts education that is central to UW Oshkosh’s mission.

Please join CETL in our new location, Sage Hall 3206!  Instructors are welcome to come in at any time for coffee, tea, snacks, and a comfortable space for working, reading, meeting with colleagues, or talking about teaching.  The door is always open for conversation and collaboration!

CETL’s Services

Take a peek bleow for a sample of the ways CETL can assist you.  Feel free to email us at cetl@uwosh.edu if you have ideas or other questions!

One-on-One Consultations & Classroom Observations

Would you like to talk through a particular teaching challenge or new idea?  Do want an impartial observation of your teaching as you try out something new?  Is there something that’s just not working in your classroom and you want help figuring out what’s going on?

CETL can help.  We are happy to schedule meetings with instructors to work through ideas and teaching difficulties.  Every conversation with CETL is confidential and any documentation you request is private to you unless you choose to share it.  Whether you’re new to UW Oshkosh and/or classroom teaching or you’re a long-time instructor who wants to shake things up, let’s have a chat.

Workshops & Speakers

Throughout the semester CETL offers targeted workshops on major themes in teaching and learning.  Anyone on campus is free to join and learn with us from on-campus presenters as well as invited guests.

CETL workshops aim to offer inspiring, just-in-time teaching tips that you can use in your classroom right away. If you’re looking for a way to change things up in your classroom, look here for some inspiration.  If you have a great tip you think others would use, let us know!

Throughout the year we also co-sponsor speakers from outside of our campus.  These speakers are brought to campus to give us a different way to look at our work of teaching and learning, and are open to the entire campus community, including our students.

Online Instructor Support & Teaching Technologies

If you’re an online instructor or have the opportunity to move a course online, we have resources that can help make the experience a good one both for you and your online students.

Request a one-on-one consultation from one of our instructional designers.  They can talk you through the entire process and help you think through your online teaching strategy.  They can also connect you with other online instructors for further inspiration.

Technology is changing all the time and impacting the higher education teaching environment.  From tips and tricks in Canvas to Generative AI, CETL can connect you with the support you need.

Supporting the Teaching Community

One of the most important things we can do as instructors is support and inspire each other.  But it’s often difficult to find times to talk to other instructors outside of your own school or discipline.  We hope that instructors will make time to come to CETL to meet with other instructors, pick up a snack or coffee, and sit down to chat.

Our location in Sage Hall 3206 offers plenty of space to sit in small groups to talk, think together, or work quietly.  If you’re looking for a place to meet with friends, have a research meeting, or focus on your own work outside of your office, we hope to see you in CETL!
