With the academic year just beginning, this post is (admittedly) a bit lengthy.
We have also created a OneNote notebook to begin building a repository of information and resources to contribute to your knowledge and advising. You can bookmark access to the OneNote resource here: Faculty Focus – Bridging Instruction and Support
Career Everywhere: Building Career Readiness Into the Student Experience
As we begin a new academic year, Career & Professional Development is excited to share the momentum from last year’s strong First Destination Outcomes and look ahead to how we can continue integrating career readiness into every student’s journey. Our vision is simple but ambitious: a Career Everywhere model—where every student, no matter their major or year, has meaningful opportunities to explore, prepare, and articulate their career readiness.
This year, we are focusing on three key priorities in collaboration with faculty and campus partners:
- Increasing student engagement at the Internship & Career Fair
The Internship & Career Fair on Wednesday, September 24, 2025 is a powerful resource not only for juniors and seniors applying for internships and jobs, but also for first-year and undecided students exploring possibilities. Faculty encouragement is one of the most effective ways to ensure students attend. By connecting course assignments, class announcements, or offering extra credit opportunities tied to the fair, faculty can help normalize career exploration as part of the college experience. - Embedding Career Readiness Competencies into the classroom
The NACE Career Readiness Competencies—including communication, critical thinking, teamwork, professionalism, leadership, technology, equity & inclusion, and career & self-development—provide a framework for the skills employers value most. Many of these competencies are already embedded in course assignments, experiential learning, and co-curricular activities; the opportunity lies in helping students name and articulate the skills they are building. Tools like syllabus competency mapping can make career connections visible without changing course content, empowering students to translate their learning into workplace language. - Developing campus-wide career readiness learning outcomes
We are seeking faculty partners interested in shaping institution-wide outcomes that connect academic learning with career development. By aligning classroom learning with shared career readiness goals, we can help students graduate with the confidence to explain how their education has prepared them for professional success.
Together, these priorities will move us closer to a Career Everywhere culture—where career readiness is not an add-on, but an integrated part of every student’s educational journey.
UARC/Advising
Changes to Advising Model:
Starting in Fall 2025 major/program-based criteria for faculty advisor assignment will be replaced by consistent criteria and a new process. Students who have a declared major, minimum 2.0 GPA and 30 or more completed credits will be reassigned to a faculty advisor in their program. Students who do not meet these criteria will remain assigned to a UARC advisor. Advisor assignments will be completed in TitanWeb and Navigate by August 25 allowing professional and faculty advisors to begin proactive outreach to their assigned caseload.
- Exception: Students in admission-based and fully online programs will not be reassigned to a faculty advisor based on the new criteria.
- Exception: students will remain assigned to TRIO SSS advisors.

READ Center
Support student success with the READ Center (Reading Engagement and Academic Development) at UW Oshkosh.
Faculty and instructional staff play a vital role in helping students thrive academically, and the READ Center is here to support that mission.
We offer two key resources designed to help students strengthen their academic skills:
Peer Academic Coaching: Students can work one-on-one with trained Peer Academic Coaches to develop effective, individualized study strategies, time management techniques, test preparation skills, self-care strategies, developing a growth mindset and more.
We know that students are more likely to persist (and succeed) when they make themselves accountable to someone and they really benefit from having that one-on-one support from someone who can help them in all of their classes.
Academic Skills Courses: Our Academic Skills (ACAD) courses, including courses like:
- Learning Strategies for College Success,
- College Reading Strategies,
- Reading in a New Language,
- Reading Strategies for Pre-Nursing Students, and
- Strategies for Academic Recovery
help students build foundational skills for academic success. These for-credit courses are ideal for students looking to boost their performance across disciplines.
If you encounter students who could benefit from structured academic support or are struggling to meet their academic potential, we encourage you to connect them with us.
Together, we can empower students to take control of their learning. For more information, visit: https://www.uwosh.edu/readingstudycenter
CAR
At the Center for Academic Resources (CAR), we see ourselves as an extension of the classroom: a resource that complements the teaching and learning that faculty foster every day. We are located in the Student Success Center, suite 102.
Here is a quick reminder of the academic support we offer:
- One-to-one tutoring for individualized support
- Small group tutoring for collaborative learning
- Supplemental Instruction (SI) sessions led by trained peer leaders
- Embedded tutoring to provide direct support in the classroom within specific courses
- Drop-in Math Lab tutoring in Swart 118 (Note our NEW LOCATION!)
All tutoring services are free to students, and scheduling is easy through Navigate.
Due to the implementation of Workday, our hiring practices have taken longer than expected. Tutoring availability may be more delayed than in past terms. Please tell students to be patient while we get our tutors onboarded and ready to go this fall.
We recognize the crucial role faculty play in connecting students to academic support. A personal recommendation from you often makes a big difference in whether a student decides to seek support. By partnering together, we can ensure that students not only access tutoring but also feel encouraged and empowered to persist through academic challenges.
We invite you to share your feedback, ideas, and questions with us.

NSRP
We still need support over Labor Day weekend (August 31 & September 1) to ensure a smooth and welcoming transition for our students and their families. This is a critical time, and your presence can make a lasting impact on their first impression of our campus community.
In addition, we are seeking help with staffing tables on September 3–4 as part of our continued welcome efforts. These tables are an important touchpoint for students as they settle into campus life.
