Telling Stories: In the Yu Gardens in Shanghai, China are multimedia interns Kristen Manders and Tom Hanaway, along with Beyond Classroom Walls producer Grace Lim (center). |
Grace Lim is the editor and producer of Beyond Classroom Walls, an online publication that highlights excellence at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. Lim is also an adjunct instructor in the Department of Journalism. With the help of University Learning Technologies, Lim has helmed several student-faculty works including War: Through The Eyes, a multimedia project that resulted in an 80-page book, an art exhibit and a series of podcasts. She was also the director of the short documentary Airboat Rescue 1: When the Ice Breaks, a cross-discipline collaborative project that involved student, faculty and staff from four departments. More recently, Lim brought two journalism students to China to document the journey of two study abroad groups -- the Math Education in China and Business and Economics in China. The students reported and podcasted from a marketplace in Ninghai to the Chinese Walmart in Hangzhou. A longtime journalist, Lim has been a staff reporter for the Miami Herald, the Austin American-Statesman and People magazine covering crime, education and business.
Tom Hanaway is a 2011 graduate from the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh where he majored in journalism and minored in Japanese. During his time in college he worked as a reporter for the Wrightstown Area Spirit, a social media intern for Reeve Memorial Union and the UW Oshkosh Department of Journalism. Hanaway has also been a contributing writer for USA TODAY, a camp counselor in Japan and a multimedia intern in China.
Kristen Manders is a 2011 graduate from the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh where she majored in business and journalism. During her time in college she worked as a marketing coordinator with Gannett Wisconsin Media, a student communications specialist with the UW Oshkosh integrated marketing and communications department, and a multimedia intern in China. Currently, Manders works full time as a data analyst at Gannett Wisconsin Media.
Editor’s Note: The China student internships were made possible through the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh Student Titan Employment Program (STEP). STEP offers undergraduate and graduate students high-impact learning opportunities in which they get paid while working on innovative projects with faculty and staff.
