Bridge Day: Listening to Hip Hop Lyrics

Exploring hip-hop lyricism through the technical lenses of grammar, rhythm, cadence, syntax and diction. Attendees discuss hip-hop’s heavy use of metaphors and similes. It is an exercise in active listening, and ear gymnastics. The literature and its analysis are discussed in the context of the education that the artist has or has not received, and the artist’s upbringing. Understanding hip hop culture and its literature leads to more common ground between educators and students.
