Arts Integration: This lesson combines art/stop motion film techniques with music and other core subjects (like storytelling/language arts, science, social studies, or math).

Lesson Objectives:

1. Learn about stop motion animation
2. Develop a storyboard for the film
   (Meets Media Arts Standard Cr1.1.6: Formulate variations of goals and solutions for media artworks by practicing chosen creative processes, such as sketching, improvising, and brainstorming.)
3. Create a stop motion animation to tell the created story
   (Meets Media Arts Standard Pr5.1.6a: Develop a variety of artistic, design, technical, and soft skills through performing various assigned roles in producing media artworks, such as invention, formal technique, production, self initiative, and problem-solving)
4. Compose original music to accompany the stop motion film
   (Meets Music Standards Cn11.0.6: Demonstrate understanding of relationships between music and the other arts, other disciplines, varied contexts, and daily life, and Cr1.1.5a: Improvise rhythmic, melodic, and harmonic ideas, and explain connection to specific purpose and context (such as social, cultural, and historical)
5. Add the music to the film

 

Activities: 

1. Learn about stop motion animation- https://tinyurl.com/StopMotionFilms101
2. Decide which type of animation to do and what story you want to tell, then develop a basic storyboard
3. Gather/create necessary materials for the film
   – Consider scenery, characters, props, etc. needed
4. Create your film
   – Use StopMotion Studio to film your movie
5. Compose music to accompany your film
   – Use Chrome Music Lab SongMaker, GroovePizza, Mario Paint Composer, Flat.io, and/or Blob Opera to create music that fits your film
6. Add the music to your movie
7. Have a world premiere celebration of the stop motion movie(s)!

 

Engagement/Introduction: Lights. Camera. Imagination! Step into the world of Stop Motion and Movie Magic and learn how to bring stories to life one frame at a time. In this hands-on experience, you’ll create your own stop motion movie while discovering how this engaging art form can spark creativity, deepen learning, and connect seamlessly across subject areas. Our adventure will begin by watching a fun example of this special film-making technique!

Assessment Procedure: Assessment will vary depending on which core subject you decide to integrate but students may be evaluated on some of the following things:

• Does the film tell a story of some kind?
• Is the filming technique smooth/steady?
• Does the film include the desired core subject material?
• Does the audio (music, sound effects, and/or dialogue) used fit the film?
• Was there good effort used in making the film?

• Legos
• Pepy Plastilina Reusable and Non-Drying Modeling Clay
• Plastic Toy Food
• Construction Paper/Cardstock
• Hot Glue Gun
• Pom Poms
• Pipecleaners
