Standards:
- A.A.Cr.7.m: Investigate: Investigate and expand knowledge of studio skills, techniques, materials, tools, and elements and principles of art and design.
- L.8.3: Demonstrate understanding of figurative language, word relationships, and nuances in word meanings
Arts Integration:
- Students will learn about symbolism during their jewelry unit. This will result in students having pendants that are personal to them and deep in meaning.
- Students will sculpt their pendants out of modeling clay BEFORE working on their castings to ensure that the end results are as successful as possible.
Lesson Objectives: Students will demonstrate their understanding of symbolism through sculpting two different pendants that have personal meaning to them.
Activities: Students will listen to teacher instruction, talk with their table, watch a video clip, and sculpt.
Engagement/Introduction:
- Teacher will ask students what symbolism is and allow them to turn and talk with a partner/table.
- After sharing, the teacher will show a video on symbolism and then explain how students will be using symbolism to create a pendant.
- Students will then be released to begin sculpting a pendant.
Assessment Procedure: Students will be assessed based on whether or not they can explain if their piece has symbolism. This can be done through submitting a picture of their pendant on Canvas and accompanying it with the following question.
- Explain how your artwork has symbolism. What does your pendant symbolize?
Materials: modeling clay/ air dry clay
Modifications: For students that need additional support in writing or literacy skills: The question could be read aloud and the student could then answer aloud for the assessment as opposed to writing it.
