Content Focus: How to multiply and divide fractions in math

Language Focus: listening, communicating

Vocabulary Focus: fractions, multiply, divide, symmetry

Standards:

  • M.6.NS.A.1 Interpret, represent and compute division of fractions by fractions; and solve word problems by using visual fraction models (e.g., tape diagrams, area models, or number lines), equations, and the relationship between multiplication and division.
  • L.6 Multiply two fractions
  • M.7 Divide fractions
  • A.A.Cr.9.m. Engage in experimentation with the expressive qualities of media, tools, and techniques with refined craftsmanship.

Arts Integration: Students will be combining visual arts and math to represent fractions by making a quilt square.

Lesson Objectives:

  • I am learning fractions.
  • I am learning to multiply and/or divide fractions and mixed numbers.
  • I am learning about symmetry.

Activities:

  • Students will grab a 4×4” piece of cardstock. Then they will pick a fraction under 11/12, but bigger than 1/?. This is so when they work with their partner it won’t get too complex to divide into equal parts. Using a pencil, students will divide their paper into equal parts according to the denominator. Then, students will shade in the numerator with a design of their choosing. Students will let their marker dry. On the back of their quilt square, students must include their fraction and their name.
  • Next, students will find a partner and combine both their fractions to create an equation they will solve. The equation must include multiplication or division. Then, students will create a fraction “quilt” showing the answer to their equation.

Engagement/Introduction: Students watched a short introduction video on quilt making.

Assessment Procedure: Students had to get their fraction equations checked by the teacher before creating. Students were assessed on if they correctly divided their fraction “quilts” into equal parts according to their chosen denominator.

Materials: cardstock paper (4×4), pencils, rulers, markers, sharpies
