Content Focus:
- Read various books and recall important elements of each story
- Understand the symbolism of colors in representing events of the story
- Create a bead that reflects their understanding and emotional response to the Battle of Books titles they are reading
Language Focus: reading, and remembering key details
Vocabulary Focus: symbolism, polymer clay
Standards:
- R.4.3 Describe in depth a character, setting, or event in a story or drama, drawing on specific details in the text (e.g., a character’s thoughts, words, or actions). (RI&RL)
- A.A.Cr.2.h: Explore and invent art-making techniques and approaches.
Arts Integration: Students will use symbolism of colors and textures to create a bead that represents key details from their story.
Lesson Objectives: I can use colors and symbols to represent my understanding of the text through creating a bead representation.
Activities:
- Step 1: Identify what colors will best represent the title you selected
- Step 2: Layer colors
- Step 3: Make a bead shape with the clay (doesn’t have to be round)
- Step 4: Teacher will need to dry the beads
- Step 5: Attach your bead to your temporary pipe cleaner. At the end of the unit the beads will be transferred to the item of choice (bracelet, necklace)
Engagement/Introduction: Read a story with the students, and reflect on the story and discuss the emotions and events described.
Assessment Procedure: polymer clay, pipe cleaners, materials for necklaces/bracelets
Materials: colored printer paper, scissors, glue/tape, coloring supplies
Modifications: After completing the activity and doing keychains, I would recommend not doing an activity with string/tying as many of the student keychains broke. Instead, use the metal bead chain to make a bracelet or necklace as shown in the materials list.
