Arts Integration: Students will create their own illuminated manuscript to show understanding of the themes in the text of a poem. Students will grow their artistic skills with drawing detailed lettering styles.
Lesson Objectives: Creating meaningful connections between a visual art form and the poetry in Grade 4 Wit and Wisdom Module 1 (specifically, the poems featured in Love That Dog by Sharon Creech).
Activities:
- Studying poetry in music class – creating graphic scores to determine how to change the tempo and energy of certain words and lines while reciting poetry
- Studying illuminated manuscripts
- Creating own illuminations on a set of pre-printed poems
Engagement/Introduction: Studying poems separately in music class and in ELA with homeroom teacher.
Assessment Procedure:
- Checking illuminations for thematic connections to the chosen poem
- Reflecting on musical interpretations of poetry
