Content Focus: Students focused on the connection between frequency and pitch, and dynamics and amplitude regarding soundwaves. They then took their knowledge and created a dance/movement to a specific song.

Language Focus: Listening to music samples, discussion with group, and communication through movement.

Vocabulary Focus: Pitch, Dynamics, Frequency, Amplitude

Standards:

  • SCI.PS4.A.4 Waves are regular patterns of motion, which can be made in water by disturbing the surface. Waves of the same type can differ in amplitude and wavelength. Waves can make objects move.
  • D.D.Cn.7.i: Cross Disciplinary Explore how dance and other content areas interrelate.
  • D.D.P.6.i: Artistic Expression Express ideas and feelings through the elements of dance.

Arts Integration: This lesson integrates the art of dance with an introductory science lesson on soundwaves. Students CREATED their own dance to show understanding of both science and arts concepts.

Lesson Objectives: Students will show understanding of the relationship between pitch/frequency and dynamics/amplitude regarding soundwaves. They will show proficiency by drawing a wavelength for a given pitch/dynamic song sample, then create a dance that matches the form of their wavelength.

Activities: Laban Efforts exercise, creating a diagram of soundwave, and dance rehearsal/performance of soundwave.

Engagement/Introduction: Students were first introduced to their lesson on soundwaves through their Mystery Science unit in 4th grade science. They were introduced to the Laban Efforts in music class.

Assessment Procedure: Students were assessed during their dance performance on whether their dance matched the appropriate wavelength of their song choice and on use of Laban Efforts.

Materials: Speaker, paper, and pencils.
